In Doctor Who, the Daleks are the most iconic enemies of the Doctor. Created by Terry Nation in 1963, they first appeared in the episode "The Dead Planet." Nation himself acknowledged the Nazi influence behind them, stating, “You could say the Nazis.”

The original serial is very much concerned with the idea of survival at the cost of your own humanity (clue's in the name; the Daleks are introduced properly in the episode 'The Survivors', which was the original title the serial was submitted under), it's a cold war parable rather than a WWII allegory.The 'L I T E R A L L Y Nazis!' reading of it really doesn't stretch. The story given in that first serial is that the Dals (the Daleks' ancestors) were a peaceful race of scholars, who were cruelly attacked by the Thals, a brutish race who shared their planet. That escalated to a nuclear exchange, and in the subsequent centuries the surviving Thals turned into pacifist pastoralists, while the Daleks sat in their underground city seething and slowly adopted their monstrous culture in their desperate efforts to survive at all cost. 'What would we do to survive?' is an idea Terry Nation was very interested in, and it's one he went back to in the '70s with his own TV series, also called 'Survivors'.
