Here’s an American train, on the same tracks that were built over a hundred years ago. It also excludes the sleeping and dining areas, which are individual cabins and cost extra. American trains are great for a slow-paced vacation, they’re surprisingly luxurious if you’re willing to pay. That seems to be the niche that they occupy in this country, they intentionally take a “scenic” route that highlights the natural beauty of the country, much of it which hasn’t been touched at all other than the railroad. There simply isn’t a compelling reason to use trains when the car infrastructure and commercial air travel is so much cheaper and faster. An Amtrak ticket is easily the least stressful way to travel, but a train ticket easily outstrips the cost of a plane ticket, and the plane is 300 times faster, even with dealing with all of the TSA security checkpoints and airline bullshit.
