First generation Cuban immigrant here. Now US citizen. It's a matter of generations, mostly. You can also see this in Asian populations, for example. Idk anything about LA but I can speak about Cuba and Miami.First generation Cubans escape Cuba, obviously, and think of America as a near mythical Promised Land. What to do in this paradise/Miami? Celebrate, at first, but then capitalize on it and work your ass off because you work and are paid for it and can afford things - all of which is surreal/absurd/impossible in Cuba. Then they keep grinding and grinding until everyone in their family is at least upper middle class. The vast majority of first gen Cubans I know are all pretty successful and everyone in my age group are pretty industrious.Second, third, etc. generations? They get worse over time. They're born in Miami/Florida and think life has always been this good and the horrors of Cuba are just 'exaggerated' bed time stories from traumatized 'uncs' and 'abuelos'. I've even seen Cuban kids walking around my old college campus wearing Che shirts - kids who have never set foot on Cuba - talking about the 'good old days' under Castro.
