The Carolingian Empire originated from the imperial expansion of France (Frankish Gaul). Most modern Germans are the descendants of tribes which were all subjected by troops from Frankish Gaul (Alemani, Saxons, Thuringians, Bavarians etc). With that being said, the Saxon dynasty was a great ally of the French monarchy in the 10th century and was instrumental in the consolidation of its power.
