Learning to hunt is alot more difficult but it can teach you a lot and you'll accumulate all of the various equipment and gear you'd need to survive out innawoods.
Also the most important thing if you are in a group will be to avoid people shooting at each over in confusion, stress, plain ignorance of the positions, etc.Here the most common practice of hunting is in groups with some of the hunters making game run in a wanted direction, where the armed hunters are. So it's already a huge training in that aspect.If you are in a city, suburb, I hope you are in a group of a dozen people that are all like minded and tight.

Army veterans can be detrimental they'll have very bad habits and reflexes : use too much ammo because at the end of the battle they think they'll get supply, think a wound is not a big deal because medevac, field medic exists. Try to make people march in straigth lines, discipline is paramount, nah the only important discipline is fire discipline (when to start shooting, when to stop)20 years ago or so I played airsoft against army and we destroyed them because of this training they have that is very, very useful when operating in a modern army and totally dangerous and useless when in guerilla. Only very high end spec op guys used to do stuff in the middle of africa without any backup or support will have the required training
