In the 1990s, there were cars with a 350-mile range that ran entirely on flywheels, no gasoline or batteries. The flywheels were small enough to fit entirely in the front trunk. The company went bankrupt because the system was so powerful and dangerous that they couldn’t figure out how to build adequate armor around it. Basically, it was too powerful to secure, so they abandoned the idea. I think we could bring it back and integrate it with the electric highway concept.

Yes. It sounds unbelievable but they actually did it. Switzerland even ran electric trains with this back in the late 1940s.

It's essentially a bomb. The flywheels were lightning fast it's unbelievably dangerous. Could take out a small neighbourhood if it's exposed without the vacuum.

Look into Swiss Gyrobus. Basically a supercapacitor bus that ran with flywheels alone. It ran couple miles and it recharged itself from the electric lines above. 40s tech.

uh ooohhh we have a Predditor
>>
>>
>>544988533
WHAT POWERED THE FLYWHEELS?
>>
>>544988533
it could also spin the flywheel back up when it went downhill for extra range.
>>
>>544988681
Electric lines. It's easier and faster to charge/discharge.
>>
This is like Matrix human battery logic. “Ooh the machines use humans for electricity! All they need is a type of fusion and they get all the power they need”. Nigger all you need is the fusion, why do you bother with all the humans??

At any rate, these need electricity to wind the flywheels. How is this not another electric car?
>>
The best way to store energy is gasoline, in a steel container, sealed.
Batteries lose energy over time.

Electricity. Flywheels are 95 percent efficient.
>>
>>544988118
A motor spins a disk to store kinetic energy. You gear it to a generator and it turns the kinetic back into electric. Sa.e as a battery electric vehicle, but you store the energy kinetically and not chemically.
>>
>>544989062
>why isn't anyone using them?
Because when they fail catastrophically it's basically a high powered shrapnel bomb going off. Every wondered why the power grids operate at a specific frequency? It's because that's as fast as they can safely spin the massive objects generating the power.
>>
>>544989020
So it's an electric motor that spins the flywheel.
Why go through the extra steps?
You lose energy using extra steps.
Like making electricy to split h2o to make hydrogen.

It's more efficient to just use the electricity to turn a motor.
>>

flywheels just store energy. they could maybe add some efficiency, storing energy during breaking and stopping. But probably not enough to counter the massive weight of flywheels.

I always thought it might have something to do with using the brains as the "computer" running the world, since they never actaully showed a giant mainframe that could be destroyed to stop it.

It makes more sense the AI would use a decentralized brain network because of the compute power, but it would take time to explain it to the audience.

Those flywheels move. They aren't inert. It's not inert energy. The kinetic momentum is what drives it forward the batteries only provide the initial thrust. >>
>>544990691
You have to produce a vacuum chamber, which requires extreme hardening. With enormous centrifugal forces inside, which produce huge drags during driving and fall apart if there is even a slightest microscopic flaw in the chamber. Kers was used in the Formular 1 as additional boost, but building it as a primary Antrieb can hardly be estimated and would likely surpass a million, which does not take into the account what at any step during the building process something might have.a minimal defects and your million goes down the drain.

>>544989234
the pic of the gyrobus at a stop shows that it only has contact to electricity there, while stationary. i suppose this time is used to accelerate the flywheel to work rpm 3000. then this would be sufficient to keep the bus going until the next stop and external impulse. pretty cool. a lot of kinetic energy involved. the swiss know how though.
>>
>>544991508
To charge the vehicle initially, it was plugged into a standard electrical outlet, using power from the grid to spin the flywheels up to their extreme RPMs. On the road, the car used regenerative braking. When slowing down, the drive motor reversed to act as a generator, capturing the car's forward momentum and using it to spin the flywheels back up to speed

• The Power Generation (The Flywheels): Each carbon-fiber flywheel was paired with an integrated motor-alternator and permanent magnets. As the flywheels spun in a vacuum chamber, the magnets induced an electrical current.
• The Propulsion: When the driver pressed the accelerator, an electronic controller "drew down" that generated electricity from the flywheels and fed it directly to a standard electric automobile traction motor to turn the car's wheels

bullshit.
The rpms required would cause the flywheel to fly apart. The motor to spin the flywheel up to speed would also be of significant size and weight.
So now, you've got two objects with significant weight that also have to be carted around all the time.
