Why are Russians still bitter about losing their former subjects instead of accepting their failures like Britain, Japan and Germany?

the collapse of the USSR was within living memory and entirely avoidable. At the bare minimum, countries like estonia, kazakhstan, ukraine (or the east of ukraine) could have been retained and a eurasia with 250 million people would be better than the current weakened russia. They're so close to being a real superpower, or having retained their superpowerism if only they didn't give up half their population.
