Well that is what happened basically, Christianity and Islam were both totalizing universalist religions but the rulers also didn't want the merchant class to get too powerful and potentially challenge them, so the Jews fit this convenient role of being grandfathered in by also being "people of the book" but also second class citizens because they didn't follow the trve faith and were also a rootless diaspora, ergo the perfect merchant class because whenever they became too big for their britches they could just take all their shit and kick them out. Plus diaspora = international commerce links, literate = bookkeeping and being court factors (which they were also well suited to because, again, their safety and position relied on the rulers' largesse to tolerate them so less likely to go behind their backs, at least in theory). This worked pretty well until the enlightenment which caused them to "break containment" so to speak and acquire a fuckload of wealth and power without the circuit breaker of being able to take their shit and kick them out because they were now Citizens™ like anyone else
