I work for a government contractor of pretty high notoriety. I don't believe very many of these companies take their security processes seriously.I don't have anything I really need to 'whistleblow' about, but I will say that we have some seriously egregious things. Including the fact that we just 'cover our ass' with a pretty incompetent 'security expert'. Rather than hiring an engineer with cybersecurity experience, they just hired a guy with a PhD in cybersecurity - but it doesn't require any active abilities... like he doesn't hop on our servers and check things. We've got horrifically misconfigured or hacky configurations of our stuff. OpenSSL configs, Apache/nginx configs that aren't standardized or loaded from a security-approved template. He doesn't even know what that would look like.He just watches whatever cybersec subreddits or whatever, and sends us CVEs and makes a big production about how important he is. He doesn't fix the CVEs. He doesn't even confirm they've been implemented. And I honestly don't think he knows how.We've found that lazy network engineers have just made unapproved cross-connects to get systems talking to one another, bypassing all security layers. They've left server software unpatched for many years.Nobody even sees this shit. Only us lowly devs discover this shit. Somebody needs some ancient, vulnerable version of Perl running some script that's been snuck into a cron. Hardcoded SQL passwords everywhere. We didn't even implement TLS for YEARS on our network. It was a few hops INSIDE our network. And it didn't only allow things into a DMZ. There was no DMZ. It just let any traffic through unscathed, so long as they'd bypassed RSA. They didn't even require a physical CAC or anything. It gets hit hundreds of thousands of times per hour. How long until a 6-digit RSA token can be guessed?
