Hitler believed in a providential force that guided history and favoured the survival and expansion of the strongest races. He was not an atheist. Publicly and in early writings he spoke of an Almighty Creator, Providence, and the will of the Lord. He framed the struggle against Jews as defence of the Creator’s work. In Mein Kampf he wrote that he was acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator by fighting the Jew. He rejected both orthodox Christianity and pure materialism. His private views, recorded in the Goebbels diaries and the German versions of the Table Talk, show consistent contempt for institutional Christianity. He called it a Jewish invention that weakened peoples by preaching meekness, equality of souls, and pity for the weak. He preferred the warrior ethos of Japanese Shinto or Islam for its emphasis on sacrifice and hierarchy. He saw the historical Jesus as an Aryan fighter against Jewish materialism and temple corruption, not as the Jewish rabbi of church doctrine. Paul, in his view, had Judaized and softened the original message into something destructive of Roman vitality. He expected science to erode Christian dogma over time and left the party formally neutral on confessional questions to avoid unnecessary conflict while the regime consolidated power.

There was never an official religion of the Reich. Point 24 of the 1920 party program declared support for “positive Christianity” without binding the party to any confession. Positive Christianity meant a non-denominational, anti-Jewish version of the faith: the Old Testament discarded, Jesus recast as Nordic, and the churches subordinated to the racial state. In practice this served as a temporary political formula. Many party leaders, including Rosenberg and elements of the SS under Himmler, pushed further toward a blood-and-soil paganism or a pure racial mysticism. Hitler himself refused to found a new religion or become a high priest. Goebbels recorded him saying he had no intention of becoming a priest and that his sole role was political. Church institutions were gradually restricted, their influence on education and youth reduced, and “Gottgläubig” (believer in God without church affiliation) became an acceptable official status for party members.

The Myth of the Twentieth Century is Alfred Rosenberg’s 1930 book, not Hitler’s. It sold over a million copies and was treated as a semi-official ideological text, yet Hitler explicitly stated it was not party doctrine. He told associates he had only glanced at it and objected to its pagan tone and mystical pretensions. Rosenberg argued that the central myth of the age was the myth of blood: the Nordic race-soul awakening under the swastika to end racial chaos. History was an eternal struggle between Nordic creative forces and Jewish-Semitic destructive ones. Christianity, especially in its Roman and Pauline forms, was presented as an alien, life-denying import that had undermined the organic Germanic spirit. Rosenberg wanted a new religion of race, honor, and soil to replace both the churches and liberal individualism. Hitler used the racial core of these ideas while discarding the more elaborate religious scaffolding. He preferred pragmatic power politics and scientific racism over Rosenberg’s metaphysical system.
In short, Hitler’s operative belief was racial Darwinism clothed in the language of Providence. The regime’s practical religion was loyalty to the Volk, the Führer, and the eternal struggle for existence. Traditional Christianity was tolerated only insofar as it could be made to serve that struggle or kept quiet.
Whatever Hitler believed, I believe. Because I believe in Hitler.
