The internet and video games use to be overwhelming majority boys and men, aged 7-30 from middle and upper middle class. Most importantly they were White. Average IQ would have been 114~Then everyone else got the internet. Keep in mind, Whites have always been a global minority. So you give a country like india, or china, access to the internet and the market for video games, the average IQ of those playing video games drops dramatically, as there is MORE of them and they are of a lot lower IQ.

Only good part were the insults to the user.Open world games like Mario 64 were great - you'd see a star and you'd need to figure out how to get it.Even JRPGs would open the world map once you got the airship/tutorial mode was done.Even 2D "open world" metroidvanias were awesome. Every time you needed or wanted backtrack through an area to get a gated item each backtrack you'd have a new or/faster way to platform or stronger weapon to kill enemies, the progression loop felt real and you'd get to use your new moves on old levels which always felt pretty good, which of course helped with new areas too - practice but it didn't feel rote. The Japanese seriously know how to design games.... Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, you could actually intuit what to do, there was no perma-lockout, you wanted to interact with everything because secrets were hidden everywhere. It was fun.Now games are railroaded. They can still be fun.
