He was a staunch advocate of urine therapy, also known as shivambu, which he believed had significant health benefits. He practiced it personally, including drinking his own urine, and openly spoke about it. Desai's belief in urine therapy stemmed from traditional indian practices that suggest urine can act as a natural cleanser and healer. He claimed that it helped him maintain good health and even credited it for his longevity. Time magazine highlighted his daily consumption of his own urine, noting that he claimed it was "very good for you, and it is even free." The Economic Times mentioned that Desai's openness about his urine therapy during his U.S. visit in 1978 led to widespread media coverage, with some American networks initially hesitant to broadcast his statements due to their unconventional nature (by American standards). In the United States, his appearance on the television program "60 Minutes" in 1978, where he discussed his health practices, including urine therapy, garnered significant attention. The American media were reportedly repulsed by his revelations, with some networks initially refusing to air the segment.
