Switched from software engineering to car work 7 months ago. Got laid in the meantime, make decent bucks, don't have to overthink 1000 things non-stop, no useless meetings and already mog most of the automechanics even though I worked only 7 months. And before you complain the anti-rattle clip is not installed correctly, yeah I know
And yeah, the guy owning the car got ripped off. The anti-rattle clip was the one making annoying sound and they changed the entire front brake system instead, annoying sound still didn't disappear. I've just won another client
>>545077115I bet I could still kick your ass though
>>545077115>And before you complain the anti-rattle clip is not installed correctly, yeah I knowit looks like it's made of aluminum and that won't stop the squeal

>>545077271Not true. Started working on cars when I got my first car at 18 out of sheer necessity. I did not have money to pay someone else to do it. There was no father, grandfather, uncles, or any other male figures in my life. 30 years later and I've never once taken a vehicle to a shop. It's even easier to learn nowadays. Everything you could ever want to know about car repair is easily accessible for free online. I did not have that luxury back then.
>>545077234It's not rocket science + youtube.

>>545077316Thats the obvious way yeah but as this anon said: >>545077271. Like 90% of mechanics are self taught. They just learned it like that somehow no books or anything and thats insane to me, cars are extremely complicated things. >>545077611Yeah but you have to identify the problem first and its complicated to repair it even with the manual, its not like assmebling legos.>>545077655I mean. If you instal a small piece wrong a chain reaction can start and you burn to death on the highway. Its not rocket science but its pretty close.

>>545077610so you never went to post secondary? sad
>>545077234Root skills and leverageThe main issue is that people are just never ever even taught the root skills. Repair is just a few root skills stacked together. The easiest way to start is take apart your TV in to major components then put it back together. After that start replacing maintenance parts, like change your seal on your washing machine. Then you do test skills, multimeter, do some pressure testing, checking against limits. If you know how to use hammer then you can use a chisel, if you know how to use a chisel you know how to use a plane, if you know how to use a plane then you know how to use a grinder, if you know how to use a grinder then you know how to use a hole core etc.Repair itself is generally routing, or that there is a closed loop which happens in sequence that you identify the part that it deviates from normal operation. You start to get issues where you have multiple loops feeding into other loops.Tools are the number one consideration. Vast majority of appliances and goods require some sort of specialised tool set. That's the investment, you only ever need buy one hammer in a lifetime. But that costs £10/20 Vs buy a guy a beer to use his.Do It Yourself attitude, the only things I ask someone else to fix is due to it requiring a very special tool which is prohibitively expensive. Even then you can rent most. Or in some cases the skill required is very specialised and takes a lot of time to perfect in case of a lot of aesthetic skills. When you start a new skill, assume it will take you 5x the normal time and 2x the calculated cost.Always remember first time is worst time. Most importantly completely and utterly ignore any and all negative comments. People hate that you can save yourself if they require someone else. People who can't see their own dick will tell you what you should and shouldn't be doing. I'll play around with a chainsaw if I wish.
>>545077184>rubs elbows with dregs of society daily
>>545077115This is what I’ve noticed as well. Come from a white collar household of engineers and computer scientists. Went to school for boring white collar work, hated it because women have ruined office environments, so got involved in more hands on work (since I know women will never do something so labor intensive). The average blue collar worker where I live (NJ) is so wildly incompetent it boggles the mind how they’re able to keep their little businesses open, yet a lot of these are making 6 figures and driving around in $90k trucks. Had one plumber come by to fix something, and this “professional” couldn’t for the life of them figure out how to turn the water line off even after I walked them to the exact spot where the shut off valve located. Another moron came by to do some work on one of the walls in our house, they completely fucked up the cuts for a few pieces of wood and dry wall- but in both cases they still charged me thousands of dollars for dogshit work that took them maybe 2 hours. After both experiences I realized the average blue collar worker is extremely unskilled at their job. I don’t know how people can be so bad at their profession and not die from shame. It really would be a massacre if the average white collar worker (ones work in important STEM fields) decided to switch to blue collar work and start their own businesses.Don’t know if it’s an intelligent thing, or simply having a higher standard of quality, but it’s absolutely a real phenomenon. And it isn’t a time issue, it takes little if any additional time to make sure your measurements are correct. Everything you build becomes a part of your community. Civilized white people should know this, and want to only contribute quality work to community they live in.
>>545077234Oh yeh, all applications can be derived to; transport, governance and conversion.Like a gutter transports water to drain. In a washing machine you have all three, transport parts (pipes and cables) conversion parts like motor and governance like PCB or thermostats.Governance is a loop that lasts full process and generally full oversight of all other transport and conversion loops/points.So say a washing machine fails to drain. The governing parts are the float valve, transport is pump or blockage, conversion is cables to pump, all governed by PCB. That's all the parts you check. All modern appliances have fault diagnosis flow diagrams. All parts are available online. You can dump pdf into AI and ask it> How to Proceed:> Check the Fault Description: Refer to the appliance status and fault codes section in the manual. A lit red LED typically points to: > High limit thermostat trip > System water pressure fault (if pressure has dropped below 0.5 bar) > Safety shutdown and/or fumes exhaust/air intake obstruction
>>545078061Thanks anon. Thats makes alot of sense actually. I can repair simple stuff but i never do it unless i know exactly how it works. With cars its harder because every part is connected to something that connected to something thats connected to something and when i start thinking about all the pieces and how they should work i just give up and just pay a mechanic to do it, unless its something really simple like tyre replacement or a blown fuse or something, i probably overthink it but im horrified of making mistakes. I do repair alot of stuff around the house like piping and furniture but complex mechanical stuff is something else.

>>545077234I learned to work on cars when I was 25-26 years old.An elder guy whom my mom knew used to brag in my face how good he was at car mechanics, he could fix this, could fix that. One day I set a trap for him, he actually invited me to a car auction.I picked the last car of the lot, a piece of shit Chrysler with a tumbling engine and a knocking sound for 150 bucks.Didn't say shit to the guy I just bought it, it was actually drivable even tho it was on it's very last leg.Drove to his house and he asked me what I was planning to do with it. I said to him, I'll try to fix it or sell it for parts, wanna help? He said no, I got too many projects, blah, blah Next day, he himself called me, asked me if I wanted to work on the car. I say sure why not Went to the parts store and got a Haynes book and a couple other partsWent back to the shop and we started stripping the car.No gonna lie, if you're a started you want someone that knows what he's doing or you'll fuck it up plus you won't even know where to start.Old fucker actually knew what he was doing and taught me real good While he was working on the engine I was reading the manual. Half way through the rebuilt everything clicked and the vision became clear. I knew what I was doing. I actually took the initiative instead of waiting for the old guy to teach me shit Unfortunately he didn't like that.the student was trying to hop in front of him and we ended up fighting. At the end I had to push the car out of his garage and finish the build by my self but by then most of the car was already put together. Couple of months later one of the seals failed and I had to pull the engine back out to replace the seal. I worked on that car for a couple more years until I gave up on it. Chrysler always built shit cars that are always giving problems, I ended up selling it and just getting rid of it.I was just done doing knick and knacks to itI replaced the power steering pump like 4 times

>>545077234Just learn it. Have an interest in it. You usually only need one person certified and work under them or act as a consultant with hands on. Have a business license and disclaimer or just plain don't give a fuck.Cars are easy, if you can't do basic car work and wiring you're a retard. Learn how to use an OBD scanner, multimeter and metric/SAE. Easy. Come on, if you nerds can build a computer, you can learn cars.Make sure you get a tetanus booster and remember the radiator fan. That is all.t. Grease monkey.
>>545078425Practice makes perfect and every step forward is a leap of faith which turns into a boring trudge eventually.Taking things apart to clean them is the key. Maintenance leverages to repair. Most people don't maintain stuff.Try a new bushes for washing machine, that's a good builder upper for instance. Step beyond component but also fairly simpleThe dirty little secret is that repair is an art, the quality of a repairman comes down to how quickly you identify the issue. After that it is just same as strip down maintenance. Most actual professionals just throw major components at it till it works. Big companies 100%. I did gas boilers and would turn up to the fucking ship of Theseus to change a secondary non integrated control constantly.> Replace> Professional help> Major components> Minor component> In situ repairThat's the hierarchy, best guys know what is wrong and repair it directly and quickly. Layman with money just replaces. Everyone falls on it, the magician repairman and the dude with infinite money being the extreme abstracts.Number one advice is loops and leap of faith. Just fall forward.I bought a new drainage pump for washing machine, in process of fitting it realised it was main motor. Bought new motor, was for different model. Same time old neighbours were getting rid of perfectly good 2 year old machine. Ohwell.jpeg thatspridefuckingwithyou.mp4In process of doing that I now can strip down a washing machine in 5 minutes and other white goods look like an easy hill to climb. Still not great at testing and identification.Boilers I just put my ear to it and know what's wrong. Cunts think I'm the magician. Put ear to boiler listen for 5 seconds 'needs new gas valve'. But I know loop like back of hand and can identify audibly.Learn the loops

I was not capable of things like mechanical work. Well wheen I was in college and needed to fix my ride I bought a Haynes manual and read it cover to cover until I lost the plot line. Then I restarted again next night and got further. When I finished the manual all the way through. Every sentence, every paragrap[h, every paragraph and section. Referencing every diagram as i read. I would finish, finally, the entire manual without getting lost. Since I have a hobby of digital electronics anyway the electrical and electronics on cars is baby simple.>that's how you become a good mechanic. You literally *memorize* the Haynes manual on a used vehicle you own and diagnose things. If you take your time, follow the "tree diagram" and keep track. Cross things off the list, they give you tests to do differential diagnosis. In the end, no fault is possible without that tree diagram showing it.

They train like spastic retards with a manual on their own cheap used vehicles, amassing the small library of manuals. After enough matching manuals, the underlying mechanical nuts and bolts are all more or less identical. The vehicle is a computer program. There is an error. Its not obvious but you still have to figure it out, the technical reference is the manual. A tiny bit of OCD redirected towards figuring everything out is a rare mineral that makes the alloy twice as strong.>Also, never fuck with a mechanic. You dumb niggers shitting on mechanical skills and professions are so funny. You can skill your way up from any trade and you’ll often land exactly where your IQ will allow you to land. Welding can be done by the dumbest spiccest of Mexicans and then there’s other welding opportunities that require a laundry list of requirements that only the whitest and brightest can fulfill which obviously bring you heavy compensation. You know what you can’t skill up in? White collar work. You went to school for business? You’re making $150k consulting? $200k managing a project? $120k teaching agile and serving as a scrum master? Nice. Rajesh has now replaced you and your entire team for 1/5 of the comp you received. Those certs and “skills” you have? They’re soft skills. There’s no mechanical test that proves your competency. You’re at the mercy of HR roasties to pass a vibe check and ultimately department heads who’s bonuses are contingent upon their overhead who have to choose between a pampered entitled American who wants 6 figures or ramjeet and his cousins who will work unlimited hours for a visa and a bowl of slop. No such thing exists in the trades. Cheap labor has always been a factor in blue collar. Before Mexicans it was the Chinese, before the Chinese it was the Irish, etc etc. >only soft slackcucks will seethe and cope at the trvthnvke before them
>>545092257>What do mechanics make? Like $16 an hour starting pay?Tire jockey or lube lane maybe, with tools provided. If you are actually doing auto repairs starting would be higher than that. Most auto places pay book time, so if the place is busy and you beat book time you can get paid for more than 1 hour for 1 hour you are working. For agriculture and construction mechanic jobs it’s more common for normal hourly pay, and starting wages more like $25/hr. Industrial mechanics would start even higher, for things like stationary engines, trains, marine, oil field stuff.
>>545092257>What do mechanics make? Like $16 an hour starting pay? Make the same amount flipping burgers now. What a fucked up economy.do it for yourself like a religion. Now you can buy used cars and motorcycles. Work/Buy/Sell/Trade then you can make money off the books and under the table doing shit for people. I know a guy that bought the ancient tire changing machine when big place had an auction. 800 dollars, and now he's the local tire guy. You bring him any rim and any tire he changes it cheaper or for trade. If you do nothing but get good at disc brakes and you can just do them on vehicles, imagine putting the 100 bucks into your pocket as profit for an hour's work, and the guy that paid you gets new brakes. I specialize in brakes and electrical diagnosis and repair that would cost too much to get done anywhere at any price at how many hours it might take. I fix used appliances people throw out and clean and sell them.PRO TIP followsbuy old heavy as fuck boomer era electric oven range topyou can't kill these thingsreplace *all* wiring after stripping, wire wheeling, painting. Use heavier wire than original;, solder all connections, no exceptions. Use new elements and buy cheap new control kit. You will *never* need another range or oven the rest of your natural life. If a burner or the oven doesn't work? Replace the ten dollar burner, easy. Or spend over a thousand on a brand new computer one and watch it fail within a couple years if that long.>that's my side hustle. brakes, electrical, wiring, etc etc. find free, fix, fucking sell. repairs for trades or cash as needed.
