Americans were such cunts I am really ashamed how we treated Russia. We should have been a lot more bro tier to them when they went capitalist. >>
>>545154853
Really, people outside Russia from the developed world can't comprehend that Russians think politics is none of their business, it's something for the elite to decide.

I mean sure in the west people are also demoralised and say about the same thing, but at least Trump got voted out and so was Biden. In Russia Putin has been in power for 26 years, because he's so great... at making it impossible for other candidates to grow or to challenge power.

Again Russians are fine with this because they think they're too stupid to have a say in government.
>>
>>545155705
Much simpler times. All I see is two tall dudes having fun and not giving a shit about ego. Today everything is a dick measurement contest and authoritarian fags like Putin only made it worse.
>>
>>545155881
Lol, are you kidding? Romania didn't rebuild on its own. Between 1991 and 2006, Romania received billions in EU pre-accession assistance through PHARE, ISPA and SAPARD, plus $5 billion in World Bank loans, billions in European Investment Bank loans, and substantial western investment. But keep coping.

>>
>>545156155
Putin kind of betrayed them. The unspoken agreement was that they stay out of politics and Putin leaves them alone. But the Ukraine war absolutely changed this. No idea why they thought trusting a glowie is a good idea.
>>
>>545156819
Wrong. Romania's inflation-adjusted GDP rose roughly 17% between 1990 and 2005, including 32% growth between 2000 and 2005. Inflation fell from 40.7% in 2000 to 8.6% in 2005, and unemployment nearly halved. And all this happened while Romania received billions in western assistance.

There is no such thing as a vice president in Russia. It's not the US and there was an election in 2000.

>>545157487
You're proving my point. Romania's growth accelerated as it became integrated into the west. It joined NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007, gaining access to western markets, investment and billions in EU funding. And your "10x" claim is bullshit: Romania's GDP grew roughly 80% in real terms between 2005 and 2025, not 900%. Even nominal GDP in dollars only increased 4.4x. Romania had a clear path to western integration that Russia never had. Pretending the two faced identical circumstances is ridiculous.

>gives Russia freedom and freedom of speech
No, that was Gorbachev

>Gorbachev succeeded in destroying what was left of totalitarianism in the Soviet Union; he brought freedom of speech, of assembly, and of conscience to people who had never known it, except perhaps for a few chaotic months in 1917. By introducing free elections and creating parliamentary institutions, he laid the groundwork for democracy. It is more the fault of the raw material he worked with than of his own real shortcomings and mistakes that Russian democracy will take much longer to build than he thought.

If you knew how basic economics, or just math in general worked, you'd know why it's easier to grow when you start from nothing. Russia went from $1772 GDP per capita in 2000 to $14962 in 2024. High percentage, sure, but the US was at $86170 already. African countries often have high growth rates too, because they literally go from mud huts to regular houses. Does that mean they aren't shitholes? Of course not.
>>
>>545153900

>>
>>545166299
Say thanks to Yeltsin for the existence of today's Russia. Thanks for shooting the White House. But in Georgia and Armenia, the local Yeltsins were told to fuck off, so now they're suffering.
>>
>>545167075
That's not true: South Korea and China also grew by tens of percent in their early stages, but that was productivity growth. Growth from $1,772 to $14,962 is an ~8.4-fold increase. Even adjusting for the base effect, Russia in the 2000s grew faster than many countries with a comparable income level.
>>
>>545167512
You're confusing nominal GDP in dollars with actual economic growth, genius. That 8.4x figure isn't adjusted for inflation or exchange rates. Russia's inflation-adjusted GDP per capita only grew about 108% between 2000 and 2024, not 740%. And much of the early growth was recovery from the economic collapse of the 1990s, helped enormously by skyrocketing oil prices. South Korea and China experiencing productivity growth doesn't disprove the base effect, it literally demonstrates how poorer economies can catch up. And guess what? Russia's real GDP per capita has grown only about 16% since 2013. You're proving you don't understand the statistics you're citing.
>>

>>545167951
No. Russia's growth in the 2000s was outstanding for any countries with a similar income level.

You present 108% as a 'modest' growth, but in absolute terms it means that real GDP per capita more than doubled over 24 years. That is not 'stagnation' but a very substantial growth.

High oil prices do not 'create' productivity, but they provided resources for growth. You correctly point to this factor, but it does not explain why some oil economies did not show even such growth. It is more of a context than a complete explanation.
