I work from home at a do nothing email job. I have more free time than I know what to do with. In some ways I think it's mentally healthier working 8 to 5 and only having the weekends to do anything because you feel productive that way mentally. The value is, how many other people they can connect you with. So everyone wants to be on the biggest network, with the most users. Back in the day of the old telecoms, this was causing immense problems. The big companies would abuse their monopoly position and refuse to put calls through by smaller companies. They would own every single vertical element of the service, from the lines going to your house, the maintenance workers, the operators....everything. The eventually passed the Telecommunications Act to deal with this mess. The internet is much the same thing. Yes there can be small areas that people with niche interests flee to. But in general, the monopoly aspect is all-consuming. Everyone wants to be on Twitter, because Twitter is where everyone is. It sucks up everything like a vacuum. They can further entrench this monopoly by hiring all the best people, buying out the competition....etc. It becomes completely unstoppable.
