What is the purpose of software engineers in the AI era?

I'm kind of at a loss as to how it happened because I never asked for it, but they pulled me onto an entirely new team that was having problems to fix it. Which I didn't think I'd be able to do, but it turns out that the team was self destructing because none of these fuckers were *talking* to each other and whenever they didn't know what to do they would just try and push it off till later instead of trying to reach out to people to clarify or ask questions.I keep telling my boss that I could just get these dummies trained to solve their own problems and communicate and he can move me somewhere else, and I've consistently been told "No, this project was going to get its contract cancelled before you got there and the customer knows you by name now. Software engineering has changed. It's now literally just babysitting Claude. 50 years ago it was punch cards. 30 years ago it was Emacs and vim. 20 years ago it was on prem monoliths.
