The basic fact of all sexual liberation is that well balanced individuals can handle the extra freedoms without going off the rails, but some can't and take it to cumbrained extremes, damaging themselves and the community. Since the Democrats are fundamentally the party of the bourgeois elite who mostly can handle it (or at least have the money to compensate for when people do go off the rails) they primarily see the issue through the former lens, and are subtextually like "why should I have my freedoms restricted just because some people can't handle it?". The Republicans, by contest, being more of traditionalist collectivists, are focused on the latter, and think that the restriction of freedoms is necessary to preserve social harmony. Ironically the inverse is true with regard to economic issues rather than social ones: in this sphere the Republicans are much more of the mindset "deregulate, bootstraps, take care of yourself and it's your fault if anything happens to you, not my problem", whereas the Democrats want a social safety net and to soften the sharp edges of capitalism
