>nuclear war means all governments are gone and everything becomes ruins with Mexico filter and we are back to medieval age
95% of people unironically believe this.
IRL total nuclear war wouldn’t affect even 1% of Earth’s landmass.

>>
>>545200715
Nice math, is that like how jews are only 1% of the world poplulation type of math?
>>
>>545200715
People are mostly filled with cope and various doomed pursuits of illusive happiness.
>>
>>545200875
For instance:
>and we are back to medieval age
>Medieval people enjoyed more self-directed free time than moderns, with frequent holidays, afternoon naps, and breaks built into the workday, averaging around eight hours of actual labor. These leisure periods included feasts, board games like chess, storytelling, archery practice, and local fairs that broke up the routine of daily work.
>>
>>545200715

EMP's pulses from nukes will destroy most electricity systems....no electricity, no computers, no television, no phones, no single working factories to build anything...I would say after nukes humankind is not far from medieval age....except they least had working society.
>>
>>545201039
Many key systems are well shielded, perhaps if there were detonations in LEO, things would start to fail.
>>
>>545200715
>total nuclear war wouldn’t affect even 1% of Earth’s landmass.
even if, it would collapse economy everywhere
we probably wouldn't go all Mad Max, but with capital cities gone, transport hubs gone, critical infrastructure gone, the world would be back to post world war 2 state
>>
>>545200815
Didn’t say it wouldn’t be a disaster. Just not nearly as apocalyptic as people think.

modern nukes are designed for maximum damage and minimum fallout
of course you can design ones that do maximum irradiation (like cobalt nuke for example), but such a weapon would be just retarded

not to say that no one would use it. there's plenty of retarded nations out there and nukes aren't that complicated. they just require a lot of resources
>>

cobalt laced neutron bombs have NEVER been tested or even built. we only know about this effect because the soviets did a few underground "earth moving" tests that produced a lot of cobalt 60.

>modern nukes are designed for maximum damage and minimum fallout
Not really, the fallout depends on whether the fireball touches the ground or not. Airbursts generally produce very little localized fallout, even old fashioned pure fission bombs like used in 1945.
>>
>>545200815
The damage from fallout is vastly overstated, most isotopes from fission have halflives measured in hours or days. Unless you decide to drive right into the ruins of New York you'd be fine.
>>
>>545202083
>This is one strike against Russia.
>Not counting the retaliation from Russia
What retaliation? Dead men can't retaliate.
>>
>>545202382
may be or may be not
probably better not to test it
what's the half life of cobalt 60?
Well, I checked, and it's like 5 years. That could render large areas uninhabitable for a few decades, which makes it a bit more usuable that I thought. I thought that it's maybe like 250 years and would render area it was used for uninhabitable for over 1000 years, but it would only be a few decades at most

People really don’t understand how much land has nothing there. And people think farms and shit that will survive the nuking will still work without logistics and manufacturing remaining functional. Farmers only know how to grow shit with artificial fertilizers they have shipped to them from a chemical plant and industrial combines built in massive factories.
>>
>>545200715
You’re right in principle but wrong in scope, with current worldwide nuclear arsenal it’s a bit closer to 5% of the World habitable landmass that would be effected. Of course, after a year background radiation would lower to the point where only ground zero is still hazardous, but within that time a worldwide agricultural collapse and mass famine would have occurred. The idea that nations would collapse is a farce though, it’s far far more likely to cause a rally around the flag effect.

Contaminating large areas with (radioactive) isotopes/poison is considered a warcrime because it affects everyone and everything except for the military. Radioactive isotopes aren't really better compared to cyanide poisoning aquifers or eradicating the fauna with deathicide.

Emp doesn’t matter, the power plants won’t be able to get fuel. Dams will be nuked, transfer stations that actually deliver power to cities will be gone. Manufacturing districts that enable the harvesting and production of fuels and the maintenance of electrical infrastructure will be wiped out.

The real winner of the nuclear warfare is the one who still can keep things running and still has capability to fuck the shit of his opponents.
This is why the infrastructure and civil protection defense is critical.
Russia, in general, sucks at it. Their ability to retreat into the large empty space already lost its value in WW2, and now, in the era of satellites and aircraft, it's useless. Girkin said in 2023 that the one who retreats from critical, industrialized places to "occupy the mud" in some backwater place would be the real loser in any modern warfare.
>>
>>545203936
just a few weeks back i said to my boss when we were talking about this we as a country should keep a huge storage of pre 60s tech for that case. cars, farming machines, wargear blablabla. stuff that can be repaired in any case.
>>
>>545203936
The US is in even worse shape to handle a nuclear war. Smaller Russian towns were simply designed to be less reliant on high maintenance things like cars that require constant, uninterrupted manufacturing input and high levels of refined energy. A lot of Russian towns can survive on coal, durable static infrastructure and makeshift nigger rigging for the next 500 years
>>
>>545203936
the real winner of the nuclear warfare is the one who isnt part of it lmao
>>545204189
russia has 2 functional cities that are first targets
without high maintance things like cars and helicopters they wont be able to to manage and exploit vast majority of their territory
big part of those borderline territories are also ethnic republics that will simply break off

>A lot of Russian towns can survive on coal, durable static infrastructure and makeshift nigger rigging for the next 500 years
It's a meme. Those all poorfagvilles are completely dependent on electricity and gasoline. The places may look as if they belong to the XIX century, but it's a taxidermy. The XIX century economy and services are gone.
>>
>>545205110
>Those all poorfagvilles are completely dependent on electricity and gasoline
You have no clue what energy poverty in those area's actually is. You're the equivalent of wondering why peasants are starving if we could let them eat cake. The thought of having an oil/gas pipeline, a truck full of delicious diesel or an aluminium high voltage line pales in comparison of reality where the soviet union once thought it was a good idea to send their people into northern siberia with some seeds and an axe in hopes of conquering the siberian climate. Instead, people mostly froze to death.

Yes, I have an axe to grind with you, true energy poverty isn't even cutting trees, its running out of stuff to burn in a bad season.

Russia has at least some capability of partial functionality in its hinterland that is more durable in a tech collapse than what the US has. The US has no broad, modular resilience or low tech fallback capability whatsoever. Russia has fewer points of failure before it loses industrial capability but that doesn’t matter, both sides will lose it. What matters is who can pivot easier to surviving in whatever mode is still viable. In Russia a lot of places still run on things like durable, low maintenance steam heat that works on coal and wood burning. They already have people used to living in hardcore rural conditions without cars. They already have at least some population that still relies at least partially on animal power for transportation and food production

The real meme about EMP is people thinking it'll affect every single electronic device. It's a big threat to anything hooked up to the grid because power lines make a great antenna for picking up the pulse and channeling it into stuff but anything battery powered, and especially things like cars where the electronics are shielded by the metal body and isolated from ground by the tires, is going to be fine unless you're so close to the blast that you're dead anyway.

The real worry with nukes IMO is that everybody is way too reliant on a huge globalized supply chain for everything. People often think they're safe because they're in rural areas that they see as self-sufficient but they're gonna be just as fucked when they've got no diesel, no spare parts for equipment, nothing to plant because modern crops are all bred and GMO'd to not produce usable seed so you have to buy it every year, no pesticides, and so on.
>>
>>545200715
I have actually been wandering just where all the worlds nukes are actually "aimed".
Like are they somewhat spread out on every single country, or like 2k all going to hit Washington/Moscow/Beijing?
>>
>>545202365

It won't disappear...it just spreading all around....if over 2000 nukes used at war there is rare places without any radiation.

There are not enough nukes for this.

The US has
* 348 municipalities with over 100k population (many of these would require multiple nukes to destroy, some even a dozen nukes)
* 824 municipalities with over 50k population
* 130 refineries
* ~400 power plants with an annual output of over 3TWh.
* 78 semiconductor foundries
* At least a hundred strategic industry and military base targets

China only has about 500 nukes that can reach the US. Even Russia only has about 1500 nukes that can reach the US. This is before considering that a substantial number of nukes would be destroyed before launch, or be destroyed in flight, or malfunction (nukes have not been tested since the 1990s). There are certainly not enough nukes to take out individual wells and lesser manufacturing districts.
>>
>>545201884
FYI, Moscow and St Petersburg contain about 13% of Russia's population

Also FYI, although Russia only has about 1500 nukes on launch systems can reach the US, it has several thousand nukes on INF-compliant launch systems that can reach Poland

Not the same type of anti-missiles. The system that would defend against ICBMs is primarily the "Ground-based Midcourse Defense" system. It doesn't work reliably and there aren't many interceptors.

SM-3 missiles might be used in some cases, and I think those were used in the Iran war, launched from destroyers based in the eastern Mediterranean.

No, most of our arsenal can only be touched if congress orders it, by declaring war or otherwise voting on a use or transfer to another country. There's a relatively small portion that's free for use without that happening and that's what we used up.
