Thank God they didn't get this brilliant idea while we we were all using mini or micro USB

Also it's pretty funny to think that solid state batteries are coming, which will be able to charge to full in about 5 minutes, and when that happens phonemakers will have to go to some EU bureaucrat and beg for permission to use a connector that can actually deliver that power
>>
A 30-ft ethernet cord is like $10 how much would a 30 ft usb-c cord be
Just like 30 bucks damn I'm getting fucking hosed for cords locally this is why I normally shop online fuck living in a small town. Was trying to avoid buying shit out on Amazon.
>>
>>545206519
Assuming something like this does end up happening in the future... what would the EU do if something even better and newer than USB-C comes along?
Just redo their whole marketing campaign and force people to upgrade and get rid of all their existing USB-C cables and devices?
>>
>>545206519
Usb-c breaks all the time leading you having to buy more and more cables over time.
Is that what this is about? "Helping" companies make money by mandating faulty hardware?
>>
>>545206519
It’s a disaster because there are tons of different standards using the same connector, and so you still end up needing just as many cables as before, except now you don’t know which one to use unless you try them first.
>>
>>545206519
so that you know, this picture is incorrect. whoever made it, has no idea that the eu-regulation actually is or is purposely misleading it with this rubbish.

>>
>>545206519
I've been into computers and tech for decades now and never until USB-C showed up did I ever have to replace a port on a device. Usb-c ports are fragile garbage. It should be banned, not standardized.
>>
The problem is that now you have 50 different types of USB C cables which have different specifications and uses and normies think they all do the exact same thing.
In theory it's a good thing, in practice the third world is gonna do third world scammy shit.
>>
>>545207773
like 95% of cable use you mean. I love usb-c but this is just plain idiotic. Optical cables are out I guess because I love having 100+ meters of dead high bandwidth electrical cables like im a retarded nigger.
>>
>>545207108
realistically usb-c is the best we can get for electric connections without superconductivity

optical connections are an underexplored area as they used to be too expensive

without practical superconductors the future will move to optical for data and copper for power, which will have to innovate beyond usb-c
>>
>>545207837
lots of tiny lanes makes them wore out quick and cant handle debris.
but they are user friendly (except the million different variants all looking identical). So many room temp niggers think usb-c interface = all the same cables.
>>
>>545207683
>getting rid of retarded proprietary shit is a good idea.
It isn't, because "retarded proprietary shit" is "how better shit is invented"
Some retared euro bureaucrats decided USB-C is Good Enough for phones, and thanks to that regulation, it's illegal to develop a phone connector that's better
It's especially funny because USB-C is not good at all. The connectors on both sides wear out from ordinary use. It's an almost perfect example of why bureaucrats should not be allowed to make product decisions.
>>
>>545206519
Audio jack is never going away. Neither will DP and HDMI. USB is the jack of all, but will not surpass any of them in speed and quality. Niggercattle should settle with usb-c jeetcords while patricians can appreciate the fidelity of an auxiliary cord.
>>
>>545208015
It's funny because all of the ports I've changed have been very modular. So on one hand device manufacturers know they are trash. But on the other hand some are a complete nightmare to replace. Like I've had to do it twice on my Meta Quest 3 and the port is the last thing that comes out on a complete tear-down.
>>
>>545208158
>every brand having their own super special charger that does the exact same thing but costs 50 bucks more is good actually
>>
Huh? Usb-c sucks for video. Doesn't even come close to the proprietary standards. I highly doubt this.
>>
USB-C is objectively a garbage standard. The connectors are weak as fuck, little bit of corrosion over time and it's over. They break off easily, they are flimsy. Using a thick heavy duty cable with USB C just stresses the connector if it comes in at any angle at all. It doesn't have option to screw on the connection either, in fact there's no secure features at all to prevent it from getting unplugged when yanked. And there's a billion different types of USB standards that go over the cable and the cables are not all compatible with each other. You cant visually identify these differences either
>>
>>545207837
My toddler has broken like six charging cables, I ended up learning how to build my own in the end and buying a bulk pack of tips lol
>>
>>545207837
I agree 100% with this. The standard maybe convenient but the hardware is garbage.
>>
>>545208502
USB-C is a trash standard. It's fine for shit like keyboards and mice but anything that requires frequent plugging or unplugging or moving with a long cable attached will wear out the port very quickly. It's planned obsolescence.
>>
>>545206519
i'm not sure that's going to work
>>
>>545208711
You're lucky it's just the cable because the ports are just as fragile.
>>
>>545208678
the real problem is fragmentation actually. there is a fuck ton of mutually incompatible usb-c standards and extensions so that you never know which cable to use. not every usb-c cable supports tb3 (usb4) or PD, or even proper video.
>>

Eu breaucrats have decided that you don't need that function. Be grateful
>>
>>545207108
As far as I know it's not the EU who mandated USB-C, they asked the industry to converge on a single connector.
So next time there's an update to this policy, the EU will ask again the industry to decide on the new updated connector that can be used for "everything".
So that people don't have to buy multiple types of cable for every type of port.
>>
>>545207417
Well the more expensive ones usually support higher current and data transfer, because they have more wiring and insulation inside.

So there are such cables that support all or most features for both power delivery and data transfer.

But yeah practically people tend to buy a USBC cable either for charging performance or for high data transfer rate. Few want to buy the expensive cables that support both.

Yes, moron, it is. Because that way you get to find out which one is best, and they compete to make better chargers. That's how things improve.
Now, thanks to morons like yourself over in the EU, it's illegal to make something better than USB-C, which is a shitty connector whose sole benefit is that it works no matter which way you plug it in (until it wears out and you need a new port)
>>
>>545207837
USB-C breaks very easily.
>>545207108
Regulate and cash in on kickbacks. That's all these morons do, EU is a bunch of has-been countries that are Africa and middle east tier when it comes to modern innovation.
>>
>>545209972
>it's illegal to make something better than USB-C
No that's disinformation.
The EU didn't mandate a connector, they told the industry to converge on the same connector.
So next time they will ask the industry to decide again on what the new great connector will be.
>>
>>545206519
thats fucking retarded, HDMI just works, display port can fuck off back to hell, ethernet should stay, DC barrel jacks are annoying garbage and should rightfully be replaced by usbc as PD is great, audio jack... I mean if you're using it for video, Ethernet and audio, you're probably going to want a dedicated cord for each so you're going to have to buy multiple cords regardless. Seems like a silly idea.
>>
>>545206519
I voted for this.
>>
>>545209598
It has nothing to do with the money... its the inconvenience factor. I can now just chop off the broken port part and build a new one within a few minutes instead of buying ten packs of charging cables.
A little baggy of parts was like 5 dollars no shipping costs, same day delivery.

>The EU didn't mandate a connector, they told the industry to converge on the same connector.
lmao you're joking right
>So next time they will ask the industry to decide again on what the new great connector will be.
This is why Europe is such a shithole. You don't understand how anything workls. There is now much less incentive to develop the next great connector. One of the world's biggest phone markets has decreed everyone has to use USB-C, but perhaps they will generously allow better connectors if they are convincing to some idiot bureaucrat.
The question is: why would Apple spend money to develop the next connector for Samsung? Why would Samsung spend money to develop the next connector for Google?
Before, faster charging, more reliability, faster data transfer etc were selling points that your phone could have over the competition, so companies spent time and resources to develop better connectors. Competition makes everything better. Now, there is less than no reason to do so: You would be asking them to spend the money and resources to develop a connector they're not legally able to sell, and the only way they'll get permission to sell it is if they give it to all their competitors. So guess how much work is going into that?
This thinking is why a company like Home Depot, which is not exactly thought of as a world-dominating colossus, is worth more than the top 10 or 15 European companies put together. Idiots who don't understand how anything actually works use state power to interfere with the people who do, and the result is that everything is worse

Chang, listen, the EU did not mandata any specific connector.
The EU told big industry companies: just decide on a big common standard and stick with that for a certain period of time (like a decade). Then you meet again and decide on the great next connector. Then tell us what that connector is so we can put it in legislation.
That's all the EU did.
There was no EU bureaucrat dictating anything to the companies. They were just asked to fucking converge on a connector and stop asking consumers to buy a myriad of different cables for everything.

>Chang, listen, the EU did not mandata any specific connector.
This is why you live in a giant union of Third World countries
>just decide on a big common standard and stick with that for a certain period of time (like a decade)
Yes, this is called forcing a standard. That they generously allowed the industry to pick what they'd be forced to use doesn't make it better.
>Then you meet again and decide on the great next connector.
I just explained to you, in terms that a reasonably bright child could understand, why this is retarded and ruins everything. I'll try again.
Developing new technology costs money. Before the EU's retarded decision, there was incentive for companies to spend money trying to develop connectors that could support faster charging, did faster data transfers, lasted longer etc. Companies could release electronics using this new connector, which would make their product more attractive to buyers. This meant it was worth spending the money, so they did. And other companies were doing the same thing! There was competition, which drives technological improvement.
Now, thanks to the EU, companies have no such incentive. You'd have to justify spending money now to develop a new, better connector, except it's illegal to put it on your product UNLESS all your competitors agree it's great and then go to the EU to get it mandated on their phones.
Nobody is going to do that. If you're a publicly-traded company, it's actually arguably illegal, since you'd be deliberately spending shareholder money on something that you know can produce no benefit to your shareholders.

The reason your continent is a shithole is because everything's like this. It's 500 million midwits who never ask the question "... and then what happens?"
>>
