Currenyly riding Amtrak's Floridian. We have covered 650 road miles - 10 hours of driving - in 17 hours on the train. Not horribly slow, but not very fast either. We're running about 80 minutes behind schedule, which is pretty good for Amtrak. I paid $75 for the 805 road mile trip to Miami, which is a good price as well.

I have driven across 27 states in the US so far and I will say that trains are not really needed. The Interstates are pretty fucking based. Sure some parts might have roads that are a little wiggly and might need an upgrade, but almost everything on the interstates are extremely well made.I really loved how they have made all these various rest stops and gas stations along with motels and hotels across the US. By far the coolest roadtrips I have ever had.And considering how US economy does and transport and everything (its fast as hell), they dont really need a high speed train system. It would cost far more than what its worth.

And in the bid to stay profitable since the 1960s (because railroad companies were going bankrupt every week back the ), most freight customers stopped being serviced due to railroad unprofitability, forcing them to go to trucks, find a new location, or go out of business themselves. Railroads make the most money on long-distance intermodal shipments. And they make the least on the small businesses that only need one boxcar every now and then. Railroads are super profitable now so I think the government should force them keep servicing the small businesses that the railroads are always trying to shed. FFS, nearly all of the land the railroads are on were given free of charge by the government and much of the rail network was built with either tax money or public-back loans.
