The right people got paid. All wars since WW2 have been for-profit. There cannot be NOT-war anymore. Zelensky quickly realises Russia is going to try to quickly defeat Ukraine.
Zelensky appeals to the EU and NATO (both organisations generally working for the US).
They arm Ukraine with their old equipment, loans and other support shy of actually committing their own troops.
Putin and Zelensky and their respective oligarchs step up their vanning, call themselves moral and eachother evil.
Ukrainian and Russian soldiers die en masse in trench-like conditions, to each other and drones.
Years later, the stockpiles of equipment the other countries are willing to part with for free have more or less dried up.
Russia has around 1/6 of Ukraine.
Most of Europe is torn between their own self interest, and the long neoliberal US slave game.
Trump's simple personal greed has no such problems, and he goes over their heads and begins negotiating with Russia to carve up Ukraine with some benefit to himself
