Democracy has only been tried a few times in human history, and literally every time it's been tried it has flamed out catastrophically within 100 years. It's a provably failed system, like Communism only worse.

American elites realized this post-Civil War which is why the modern world is composed of faux-democracies. Which are more stable than real democracies, but still share many of their flaws.

Not to mention, the Greeks who are regarded as the founders of western democracy had a system in place to switch to a dictator in times of war, catastrophy, or general hardship.

So even they agreed it wasn't really a serious system, but only a feelgood idea to use when you could afford it.
