I would take any speculation on the passengers or pilots identity with a grain of salt for now until we get actual verification from the families of those onboard. NTSB investigation will be interesting to follow on this one for sure though. If I had to guess, it was bad luck with some ice getting in to a particularly bad spot under a control surface and possibly fucking up a hydraulic line somewhere when the pilot tried to operate that surface. The vertical stab is gone in the frames from just before the impact, probably was lost during the overspeed on the dive. Can't find an amm for the plane but I'm guessing the fatal ice buildup was on both the wings and the wings and the elevators to case that kind of loss of control. I think the big question is if the crew had their de-icing system going before takeoff, since the flight manual for the plane definitely stated that it needs to be on and running before encountering possible ice conditions.

Beyond a critical point of buildup on the leading edge and upper surface of the wing/horizontal stabilizer you induce a situation where there is total flow separation before the airflow reaches the control surfaces. When that happens you effectively have no control over the plane other than differential thrust and maybe some rudder authority. You've effectively created a deep stall situation only you can't be saved by dumb luck in the event that your AOA reduces. You're trapped in that no control authority, low lift condition until the ice is gone or you crash. The only way you save yourself from that kind of thing is not putting yourself into a situation where you're flying into an area with high potential for heavy icing without the correct anti-ice hardware and personal knowledge that it's working, and even then it's not advisable. Smart pilots tell their employer/client to go fuck themselves if they try to tell the pilot to fly into a storm instead of taking a minor delay.
