I am convinced that people nowadays feel like we in the Western world have the virtue to be empathetic toward every tragedy presented to us. But the truth is that human beings as a whole don't have the level of empathy required to feel afflicted by a war that isn't their own. The very core of our condition is survival, yet the culture around me is trying to tell me that somehow we should care for a country far away that is being bombarded. While the concern is valid, the only reason people pretend to care about Palestine is because of the exhausting capitalization of the war and how it functions as social cohesion rather than a genuine acknowledgment of the tragedy itself. I am Christian and I believe in human sin, and I don't believe humans feel perfect empathy or ache for a people they haven't interacted with even once. So I do think there is a dishonest discourse about pretending to care when, in reality, we don't, we just capitalize on it.The other day, I went to a clothing store in the center of Barcelona, and there was a display of the Palestinian flag in the store. The store belonged to a megacorporation that operates in Israel as well and has gained economic success selling clothes there.I am not saying that what is happening is good or that we should turn away from it, but it seems to me that we are interacting with a war in a cartoonish way, turning it into slogans, selling shirts with the Palestinian flag and making raves about it, and overall converting the whole thing into a market. This didn't happen during the Iraq War or any other recent war, which makes me think that Zoomers, especially left-wing Zoomers, are completely braindead and unable to be self-aware of their political condition
