Those idiots could be alive right now if they had parachutes and a ready escape hatch.
>The reason passenger planes aren't equipped with parachutes?
It would lower consumer trust in air travel because it draws attention to the possibility of a crash.
I'm not joking, this is their reasoning. Look it up.

Just install chutes in the seat backrests and auto-inflatable rafts in the seats, then put escape tubes in the middle aisle exiting from the bottom to avoid being sucked into the engines.
It's not rocket science. Yet it is, and apparently beyond the designer's capabilities.

No, that’s a sensationalist headline “reason” that like all such things is only one piece of the truth. It’s like saying “McDonald’s doesn’t install defibrillators in their restaurants because it would lower consumer trust in their food.” Technically yes, but it’s mostly that it’s considered an excessive cost for the amount of human life it would save, and yes, human life does have a price. Money itself is an expression of labor-over-time, a line must be drawn on how much life essence we’re willing to put in to protect life as we may end up spending too much life in the process. Obviously we never hit that as the deciding factor as corporations finding out what they can get away with kicks in before that, but trust me, there are still billions going into figuring out how to make aircraft’s stay in the air in the first place rather than designing with “how to get grandma in a chute and out the door alive” in mind.

Just put parachutes on the whole passenger cabin. Or at least the first class section. Problem solved.
>>
>>545360301
This can be done and it would have saved tens of thousands of lives throughout history but would also make plane tickets more expensive so the poorfag class would never allow it to happen.

>>
>>545360301
Use economy class as crumple zone for first class. Best bang for you're buck
>>
>>545360364
This makes sense. A common complaint was that the size of the parachutes would be too big to save the entire plane.
If you only jettison the first class and let the rest die this solves the size problem.
>>
>>545360268
You’re ignoring the argument. How much human life (in labor-over-time) should be spent on protecting life? Cars kill a lot of people, should we ban them? Pregnancy complications kill women, should we ban pregnancy? A certain amount of human life must be sacrificed on the altar of progress, the question is simply “how much?”

>>545358147
or you could not have women pilots. women rely on whatever is provided them and these 100k+ extensions would be deployed regularly and destroying the $100k plane and the woman will refuse to pay a for any of it so a mandatory insurance would be instated and then flying will be (even more) prohibitively expensive because you'll need a million dollars to get a $200 burger in a cessna.

At the speed they were going they wouldn't even have made it from their seats to the parachutes, let alone put them on, open a door, and jump out.

they wouldn't have even got out of their seats, the G-forces from the dive would've rendered them all unconcious or dead.
>>
>>545358147
>It would lower consumer trust in air travel because it draws attention to the possibility of a crash.
Literally unironically the reason I prefer not to fly. I know statistics fags will ridicule me for this but let's just say I'm not exactly endowed with much luck and I know if a plane I'm on does start to fall out of the sky your chances of survival are fairly slim to none and actually somewhat lower on modern planes with avionics than in older planes that were manually piloted (since I know from extensive flight sims I do enjoy that planes usually can be brought down somewhat safely in even dire conditions like loss of engines etc, provided they manage to dump their fuel in time).

Plus now with AI it's literally over, China and Russia will be hacking planes and crashing them left and right just because they can and are stupid and evil enough to want to regress human civilization back to a "feudal warring" period basically, and they get to do 9/11 every week instead of just once or twice since it cost them tons of effort to create ie Al-Zawahiri and OBL and now they can just do it with a bunch of autist coders who don't know any better than CCP indoctrination from birth.
>>
>>545358147
>auto-inflateable rafts in the seats
Yeah that sounds like a great idea until the mechanism fucks up or gets set off by a kid/nigger and now you have a bunch of rapidly inflating 30+ foot rafts squishing everyone in the cockpit.
>>
>>545360479
The engines are the only problem and that is a design flaw. We've already established plenty of pilots jumped out of free falling airplanes, jets included in WW2 and made it out alive. It's like you're too stupid to read.

nigger, stfu, you're dumb as hell for thinking random people make it out of a plane in 60 seconds. the plane was nose diving at the earth meaning you have to look up to see the tail part of the plane.

you're strapped on seatbelts and if you werent, you would break your arms and get severely injured. you probably had less than 20 seconds to identify what's going on and get a parachute before it would become impossible.

>>
>>545360703
They also jump out of jets like the C-17. The C-17 has to slow down to just over stall speed for them to exit safely.
Leaving aside that it takes a significant amount of training to even be able to safely jump from an aircraft with a parachute, you wouldn't have time to put one on and then exit the aircraft in an emergency, especially if that aircraft is in a max dive.

It'd still be better than crash them in a 40t tin can at terminal velocity
>>
>>545362193
What's with all the idiot pretending like it's impossible to jump from a moving (jet) plane itt?

Of course you depressurize and ideally decelerate but regardless of airspeed if there were some sort of evacuation hatch in the back then jumping with a parachute would still be preferable to crashing along with the wreckage, clearly. That should be the default for any situation where emergency landing safely has exceedingly low chances of success, such as total aeleron or rudder losses etc.

Said parachutes might even be designed such that they automatically opened at the last minute before they should in case the person somehow got incapacitated during escape or shortly thereafter.
>>

>>545361083
Realistically speaking. If the 9/11 jumpers had access to a cars airbag, and a way to trigger it manually, could this have actually worked? Or is even an airbag not enough to counter gravity in that situation
>>
>>545360301
Cirrus SR22 planes have exactly that (CAPS). But, SR22s are single engine props, not jets. Engineering dollars go into making planes as air worthy as possible. I suppose jets could be designed to have a chute deploy, but then you are increasing expenses for something that statistically should be exceptionally rare.

We'll see what NTSB comes back with, but it seems like the horizontal stabilizer broke off. My question would be, did this happen suddenly as the plane was climbing to get out of the turbulence or did it rip off when they lost control. The FO (lady pilot) reported that they were managing icing, so it could be that the jet suddenly iced up more.

Re chutes in a cabin: the maintenance, safety checks, etc for a cabin of parachutes would be so expensive that it simply would not be economical. Commercial aviation in North America and Europe still remains an incredibly safe complex system, despite the degraded treatment of maintenance, jeetening of manufacturing, and DEI programs for pilots and ATC.
