>>545425865Ice built up, made it fall too fast and break up. Ice is quite easy to avoid, such as flying up high where it's dry, flying low where air is warmer or turning around to known warm air. Basically the boomer retard and the wop girl were flying in the moist danger zone for a long time without any thought of the cold damp air and let the ice build up and then they were fucked
>>545426052At -50C it's actually pretty safe because any water in the air is well and truly already dry and frozen so doesn't stick to the plane
>>545425924U lost. Tranny.
>>545425865Ice sends it in a nosedive.Speed breaks it off. They stalled at high altitude due to ice buildup, probably couldn't deploy any spoilers or flaps or anything due to the ice. With no controls, they couldn't do anything but pick up more speed. Probably didn't pull back on the engines either in the panic. Bigger airplanes have gone down or at least suffered write-off damage due to pilots thinking they can just power through the ice

Lears have a heat bleed system installed for de-icing in such situations, but if it never gets engaged or, often, is nonfunctional, once the controls lock up you're basically screwed. The two damning questions about this are 1. Why did air traffic control not give the pilot a new course when asked 1300 miles earlier before the Lear went into the supercell? and 2. Why did the pilot not throttle back once in the dive, but instead increased speed until the impact velocity was beyond terminal?
>>545427692So how does a plane just freeze all over in a couple of minutes? Dr. Freeze was in the area?Besides, planes have heaters to prevent that from happening.

>>545428010>in a couple of minutes? In heavy icing conditions it can happen in seconds, which is what all signs are pointing to in this flight. I assume you've never experienced it in italy but have you ever heard of the weather phenomenon freezing rain? Freezing rain is dangerous as fuck in a car that's on the ground when the primary risk is only sudden loss of visibility. When it accumulates at an even faster rate on the middle of your wings or elevators causing flow separation upstream of the control surfaces or worse total stall states you can end up in an unrecoverable condition faster than you can react. When you have normal slow accumulating icing it usually only collects on the leading edges of the wings or stabilizers so that's where deice/anti-ice hardware is placed. Normal commercial or private use planes do not have any contingencies for rapid ice accumulation on other parts of the wing because such a system would be a nightmare to engineer with everything else they're packing into the wing structure and would statistically speaking never be used. Plus anytime it would be necessary there isn't enough thermal energy likely generated by all the engines devoted only to that task to melt the quantity of ice that accumulates when it starts accumulating in those areas. Heavy icing situations are not something we can really deal with if you find yourself in them. Your only way out is to never put yourself there in the first place.

>>545430061Because it's standard operating procedure in commercial flight, especially private charters in small planes, to avoid giant fuck off storms. Some outfits have huge exclusion zones around storms that their pilots are forbidden to even approach. This situation was a confluence of a lot of factors and pure bad luck creating the outcome we saw.
I can tell its a big deal not to let you gays get it in your head it was a missile. #No planeGet on my levelShit's gay af, all of it.
>>545430428No brother you can’t just glide the ice is preventing the airflow over your wings and tail it’s just one big stall til you hit the ground
>>545430428It's literally just random chance depending on what shape the ice takes. Wings are carefully designed to make planes fly, sheets of ice aren't.
>>545427943>1. Why did air traffic control not give the pilot a new course when asked 1300 miles earlier before the Lear went into the supercell?ATC isn't going to navigate for every single plane just to circumvent the possibility of pilots being retarded.>2. Why did the pilot not throttle back once in the dive, but instead increased speed until the impact velocity was beyond terminal? They don't train for what to do when everything is already fucked, except maybe some bullshit simulator that doesn't count for anything. The training is about never getting to a crazy nosedive in the first place. Also it's not like it just slows down magically by throttling down after it's already diving at 600 mph
>>545430233I think fucked either way, a large airliner can bleed hot air trough their wings when needed and generally more stable and would have made it trough and most likely not fly into a red storm in the first place. A small jet like this can turn to an icicle in no time.
#Still winning.
>>545430846To be fair, you can literally fly a brick with control. Gassing up to 100% and yanking back on the stick to rip off the stabilio elevator then keeping it gassed at 100% all the way to the ground may have had something to do with it. Power off, flaps out, steady nose up and if you still can't slow down, wreck the fucking undercarriage...at least you get control of the plane again instead of being stuck in a static dive.
>>545431214>He thinks the elevators still pitch the aircraft when the horizontal stabilizer is icedLel
>>545425865they thought adding bottom slanted non operational not elevator back winglets would make up for designing a severely undersized elevator, they were wrong.
>>545431252>> he hasn't a clue as to where icing occurs..Lel - should have put on the trailing edge horizontal stabilizer heater then! Fuck me dead!
I just think it would be better to have your flaps frozen fairly level rather than in a climbing position, at the very least you'll buy yourself some more time in the air I would've thought.I just assumed it was only the mechanical parts that got frozen in place though, if the whole plane was getting caked in ice then obviously they were fucked either way.
Why the fuck don't planes have giant airballoon parachutes that come out.Like if your plane is in the air and shit just goes south there should be a big arse lever you pull on that just breaks teh wings and fins and shit that can drag you about off and then a huge series of parachutes ploomfs out the top.I dont see why a single plane has to crash into the ground and for people to die everLike space ships do this, they just break all the shit off and turn into parachute landing tube. Why not?
>>545431662Because they don't have 20 year old female pilots on the space shuttle?
De icing strips are only on the leading edge of the wing and stab. Thats where you normally have ice. Now these dipshits flew into rain at extremely low temps.Likely had ice build up just behind the de icing system. This would ruin the airflow over the wing causing a loss in lift. Enough ice formed to stall the wing even at high speed. At that point loss of control, at the speed they had enough lift again they would have exceeded the mach number of the airframe. Excellent example of coffin corner in action.
>>545426159>They were trying to fly over the stromIt was known beforehand that storms in this area can quickly grow vertically and reach higher than a Learjets service ceiling so trying to ascend above the weather was a mistake. The captain was authorized to just divert in whatever direction would take him out of the icing conditions so that's what he should have done.
>>545431754Weather radar, which they had on the plane, showed plenty of space and paths around the severe weather, it was completely stupid to plow through it and it cost them. They were diverting before around the larger severe weather but did a b-line through the relatively smaller patch, didn't follow protocol, didn't take the "small" patch seriously, they should have treated it like it was lava, not a suggestion.
>>545432535I am curious how other planes would have fared as that elevator does look undersized.
>>545425893Well just looking at his frontal picture the question seems fairly redundant, doesn't it?
>>545425865at that altitude hitting ice is like hitting solid water
>>545432535Didn't ATC say something like "you are clear around my airspace but you are far off" or something like that and then the next comm was requesting the higher altitude? That's what I don't understand, ATC basically said to go Right and they went Up.
>>545426748>look at it tiny as fuck stabiliizer, tiny as fuck wingsThis is basically it. A Learjet 60 isnt safe to operate in icing conditions at high altitude. Once they had flown themselves into that, the situation was far from "manageable" because trying to gain altitude and fly above the weather isnt safe, and performing a turn and diverting also isnt safe, so your best bet is basically to descend while flying straight ahead. So if you're happening to be flying in the direction of a storm that gets worse as you descend you're a bit fucked.

>>545433103They could have gone left or right, left would have been going between the large weather and small patch. I think they didn't take it seriously like they had notably done before and thought they could go through it because it was "small," with maybe overestimating the plane with a chance that plane in particular is under designed to handle bad weather with a small elevator.

>>545425865so you're saying the audio of the pilots talking about getting iced wings on the radio is fake?the wings rely on their shape to accelerate air to different speeds to create lift. Ice changes that shape
>>545425865Read more about stress analysis.
>>545425865Has wing and control surface design that is prone to getting fucked up by small amounts of ice (wing shape stops producing lift when ice forms.)Manufacturer compensates for this by repeatedly warning pilots not to push it beyond it's capabilities. IE never fly it near storms, let alone through one. This incident should be a wake up call to private jet pilots. Every single commercial pilot that has chimed in on this incident mentions how they actively avoid storms by atleast 20nm or more. They typically share a horror story one the one time they didn't and that's why they always do, fuck the fuel and fuck the ATC they just say it's an emergency than it's ok.Learjets but especially this model are really unforgiving if the pilot pushes it beyond it's abilities of if it gets fucked up in a storm. That's why it crashed. Even among private jet pilots the Learjet 60 isn't popular or beloved.
>>545425865ice stalled the plane you retardthe stabilizers tore off as they were doing missile speeds straight into the ground
>>545425992ATC said no when they politely asked to divert SE around the storm front. What a more experienced crew would've done was replied with "I'm not requesting, we need to divert to avoid dangerous weather." Which ATC would've said "ok I'm clearing traffic in that area for you."Sounds biegne but reading some pros accounts of similar incidents it sounds like they should've just told ATC the needed to out flank this storm. One pilot recounted how he once requested a divert around weather and ATC said no then he said "it's not a request" and ATC said "ok you got it go for it."There really wasn't much traffic in that area at the time so they'd have been fine going around it. They needed to make it clear to ATC they needed to go around. You can tell copilot was rattled when they had to try to overfly the storm instead cause the Learjet gets fuckier to fly at higher altitudes (thin air increases odds of coffin cornering which seems to be what happened to them.) Chick gets blamed for not being more assertive to ATC but to be fair pilot should've chimed in with "it's not a request we're diverting around this storm, got it?" Which is totally fine to do. ATC are like women, they like confident assholes.
>>545426748>robust airshipsJust fyi airships were notoriously fragile. Not just the Hindenburg. America abandoned them after a few of ours were destroyed in wind storms. As cool as airships are they don't exist anymore (rigid type I guess meme blimps are still a thing sort of) so none are designed by computers.Wide bodied airliners are the beasts of the skies these days. Not airships, sadly.
>>545425865it doesn't the ice forms on the wings and over time causes the auto pilot to constantly correct with a high angle of attack. so when they tried to climb further they actually entered a stall, but they stalled right in the middle of the updraft which just caused their nose to plummet, they started to pick up speed again, but this pushed them passed their mach boundary before they could react and in the overspeed they broke their tail off.that's my guess.they should have known something was fucky when they were picking up ice and precipitation above 30000 ft and should have diverted and waited out the weather. but they flew for 10 minutes straight into the heart of a storm.
