Khitan Empress Xiao Yanyan (Xiao Chuo) of Liao Mongolia raided and defeated Song China. She had 100 good looking Han Chinese boys castrated to become her eunuch slaves.https://www.hznu.edu.cn/upload/resources/file/2020/12/31/7625625.pdfUnlike their Han Chinese counterparts who were mainly sequestered to the inner quarters, many imperial Khitan women of the Liao 遼 (907–1125) were not only active in state affairs, but they even rode astride and led their own armies to fight on battlefield. This article aims to investigate the lives and political careers of Empress Dowagers Yingtian and Chengtian, who ruled the empire as de facto sovereigns on behalf of their husbands and sons for over fifty years, by focusing particularly on how they proved themselves as capable horsewomen and what strategies have they employed in order to gain access to power and to accomplish their ambitions. Such warrior women, exercising leadership and exhibiting personal bravery, drew their strength from their Inner Asian steppe traditions and therefore established themselves as another type of queenship in Chinese historyDuring her regency, Chengtian proved herself as a capable administrator, but her most celebrated capacity was as military commander who defeated the Song army, for which she can ‘claim a unique position in Chinese history’ (McMahon 2013b: 261). Like Yingtian, she held her own ordo, which could provide a standing cavalry of 10,000 horsemen (Liaoshi 35: 404; Franke 1980: 25–26). Four years after Shengzong’s ascendance to the throne, the Song emperor and his generals launched a large-scale invasion of Liao territory in 986. Trying to take advantage of the 15-yearold Liao emperor, the Song expected an easy victory. The young mother, now aged 34, steered chariots and rode personally with the Liao army and utterly defeated the Chinese. The dowager captured about one hundred boys, whom she ordered emasculated, adding to the group of Liao eunuchs (Johnson 2011: 129).

He was intelligent and well-versed in books and the Liao language. He was promoted to Neiyeye, and later became Yabian of the Left Wing of the Neishi. When Emperor Shengzong assumed personal rule, Wang Jien was repeatedly promoted to positions including Shangyi Kusi (Director of the Imperial Wardrobe), Zuochengxuan, Linmenwei Dajiangjun, Ling Zhou Guanchashi (Inspector of Lingzhou), and Neiku Dudidian.8 继恩好清谈,不喜权利,每得赐赉,市书至万卷,载以自随,诵读不倦。每宋使来聘,继恩多充宣赐使。后不知所终。Wang Jien enjoyed refined conversation and disliked power struggles; whenever he received imperial gifts, he would buy books amounting to ten thousand volumes, carry them with him wherever he went, and read without tiring. Whenever envoys from the Song dynasty came for diplomatic visits, Wang Jien often served as the envoy to present imperial gifts. Later, his final fate is unknown.9 赵安仁,字小喜,深州乐寿人,自幼被俘。Zhao Anren, courtesy name Xiaoxi, was a native of Leshou, Shen Zhou; he had been captured since childhood.

After the prince's death, he was appointed Yabian of the Neishi Sheng (Office of Eunuchs) and Tongjin of the Yuyuan. In KaiTai eighth year, he conspired with Li Shengge to flee southward, but was captured by patrolling troops.11 初,仁德皇后与钦哀有隙,钦哀密令安仁伺皇后动静,无不知者。 Initially, Empress Rende and Qina had a conflict; Qina secretly ordered Zhao Anren to monitor the empress's activities, of which nothing was unknown. As Empress Rende's authority grew heavy, Zhao Anren feared disaster and plotted again to escape back south. Empress Rende wanted to execute him, but Qina pleaded on his behalf. Emperor Shengzong said: "Xiaoxi often speaks of how his parents and brothers are all in the Southern Court, and every time he thinks about it, his spirit is overwhelmed with sorrow." Now, for the sake of thinking of his parents, he risks death to escape; this is indeed the heart of a filial son and truly deserving of pity. "

In the early Zhongxi period, Qina assumed regency and wanted to depose the emperor in favor of his younger son Chongyuan. The emperor plotted with Zhao Anren to move the empress dowager to Qing Zhou to guard the mausoleum. He was appointed Zuochengxuan and Jianmenwei Dajiangjun (General of the Gate Guards), as well as Du Zhi of the Neishi for Khitan, Han Chinese, and Bohai eunuchs, concurrently serving as Dudidian. When the emperor wanted to visit his empress dowager in person, he went to escort her back. The empress dowager scolded him and said: "You deserve ten thousand deaths; I once saved you." "I do not expect you to repay me, but why have you meddled between my mother and son?" Zhao Anren had no reply. 此安仁所以不克有终,继恩幸而免欤?」Commentary says: "Titles and honors are meant to inspire the world; they should not be granted unless one is virtuous and meritorious, let alone to eunuchs." Wang Jien served as Neiyeye and Zhao Anren as Huangmen Ling, which seems appropriate; but how could they be so indulgent in private affection as to bestow upon them positions such as Guanchashi (Inspector) and Dajiangjun? The "Yi Jing" says: "Carrying a burden while riding a carriage invites bandits." This is why Zhao Anren did not have a favorable ending, and Wang Jien was fortunate to escape?

>>545601096Khitan Empress Chengtian (Xiao Yanyan) made her Han Chinese eunuch slave boys serve her when Song Chinese envoys came to pay tribute to her at her court. The Song dynasty was trying to recover the Han populated 16 prefectures around Beijing from Liao Mongolia's control and they expected a woman ruler to be weak so they attacked but Empress Xiao defeated them and went on to launch massive raids and invasions of Song China for attractive eunuch slave boyshttps://kknews.cc/history/442qba2.html>從上述記載中可以知道。 It can be known from the above records. The number of eunuchs in the Liao Dynasty was also relatively large. The Wise Queen was Xiao Chuo, the Queen of Jingzong of the Liao Dynasty, and the well-known Queen Mother Xiao Yanyan. She elected nearly a hundred eunuchs at one time among the better-looking children under the age of ten in the South from the Song Dynasty. This shows that the number of eunuchs in the Liao Dynasty may be hundreds more, because the eunuchs in the palace were the same as schools and units. All ages are available to ensure the continuity of their work. It also shows that most of the eunuchs in the Liao Dynasty were captured from south from the Song Dynasty. Since most eunuchs in the Liao Dynasty were Han Chinese, they did not serve by the emperor's side like the eunuchs in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, but rather did chores.

>>545603205>Thirty years old, Chengtian dominated her song, and with the help of loyal officials, ruled until her death in 1009. For high offices she employed both lower-ranking members of the Yelü clan and Chinese officials, in particular one named Han Derang 韓德讓 (941-1011) whose father and grand-father had served the Liao since Abaoji's time and who had been awarded the Yelü surname. By way of establishing her authority, the dowager performed a rite normally limited to emperors when assuming the throne, the ritual of rebirth (zaisheng yi 再生儀) It involved a special building that the ruler entered in order to be reborn, ceremonial actors, libations, ritual objects and incantations, and the act of undressing and redressing in special clothing.>Empress Chengtian's most glorious act was the defeat of the Song-dynasty army, for which she can claim a unique position in Chinese history.>The fifteen-year-old emperor and his mother rode personally with their army and utterly defeated the Chinese, who fled with the Khitans in pursuit. The dowager captured around one hundred boys, whom she ordered castrated, thus adding to the corps of eunuchs already imported during an invasion of the Later Jin.>One man who was captured at age six and kept as a house servant by the family of a future empress is recorded because his son was on close personal terms with Liao Taizu. Several decades later, a boy captured in the Liao campaign of 1004, led by Empress Dowager Chengtian, was one of nearly one hundred captured boys under ten selected to be castrated for service as palace eunuchs.
>>545603455>Eunuchs in the Liao dynasty were captives of war and of a different ethnicity than the Khitans. Wang Ji'en was one of the almost one hundred ethnic Chinese boys under ten years of age who Empress Dowager Xiao captured from Song China in 1004. She had them castrated so they could serve as eunuchs in her court. Wang was intelligent, literate and knew the Khitan language, rising to high ranks of general of palace guards, inspecting commissioner, and intermediary between the Song and Liao during tribute embassies. Rejecting power and profit, he liked to engage in intellectual discourse. His money was spent building up his library, which supplied his reading material wherever he traveled.>The other Liao eunuch Zhao Anren had a less distinguished record. He was taken hostage at a young age and presumably castrated under the same circumstances as Wang Ji'en (Tuotuo 1974, pp.109.1480-82). After a plan to flee to Song China backfired in 1017, he was spared of execution by the emperor on the argument that Zhao's flight to return to his own parents and brothers had been motivated by filial piety, the backbone of Confucianism. Later, after he became general of palace guards, he was accused of alienating the emperor from his mother. Violent death is often depicted in eunuch biographies, but since we are not told how these two Liao eunuchs died, we might reasonably assume the death by natural causes. This low profile of Liao eunuchs is accounted for by the ordo, a nucleus of imperial guard attached to the person of the ruler and created by the founder of the Liao dynasty. The eunuchs were not powerful because the rulers relied on the loyalty of the tribal military establishment--not the eunuchs--to balance the power of the bureaucracy (Wittfogel and Feng 1949, pp.4-16).

D.), a eunuch of the Liao court, was abducted by the Khitan army from his native city Tichou (棣州 » now, in Shantung Province). Since he was good-looking, he was castrated and made to be a eunuch. "Chi-en liked philosophical discussions and despised power and money. He spent all his income to buy books and accumulated about 10,000 chuan.">castrated to serve as eunuchs at the Khitan court.>We have virtually no information about the activities of Liao eunuchs outside of the two eunuch biographies in the Liao dynastic history. The biography of Wang Chi-en informs us that Wang knew the Khitan language, and that he held several positions in the palace domestic service. He even was appointed to a military office, as general-in-chief of the palace gate guard (chien-men wei ta chiang-chün.) Very possibly this was an honorary sort of appointment without actual military responsibilities. The other Liao eunuch with a biography, Chao An-jen, was also captured as a prisoner of war at a young age and he was he was awarded the same military officer which Wang Chi'en held. Among the offices which Chao held was that of office manager in the palace domestic service of Khitans, Han-jen, and Po-hai nei-shih tu-chih). The title of this office suggests the presence of all three ethnic groups in the palace domestic service.

In fact, the Khitans predated the ethno-genesis of the Mongols and were enemies of the latter. After the DEFEAT of the Khitan Liao dynasty by the Han Song dynasty and the Jurchen Jin dynasty, the Khitans fled west establishing the Qara Khitai which was eventually conquered by the nascent Mongol empire. Notably, there was a feud between Genghis Khan and Kuchlug, a Naiman prince who usurped and ruled over the Khitans.I find it ironic that people like you celebrate barbarians who lived in tents, fucked horses, murdered, marauded and pillaged while at the same time condemning the niggers, mudslimes and jeets that invade and destroy your civilizations with nary a resistance from the local authorities. What enduing legacy had the Khitans left behind? What works of art, architecture or culture that were uniquely Khitan survives? Much of what we know about their history were recorded by the Chinese. The Khitans tried to copy Chinese writing, but their script was barely used because guess what, horse fuckers don't read and write.

>>545606459Khitan were not enemies of the Mongols. The Khitan leaders Yelü Liuge and Yelü Chucai allied with the Mongols and were absorbed by the Mongols. Naimans themselves were Mongols and Kuchlug was the one who started the war with Genghis, not the Yelü Khitan who ruled Qara Khitai. The Khitans were assimilated into the Baarin Mongols of the Baarin (Bairin) Left Banner in southern Mongolia (Inner Mongolia) and the rest of the Khitans in Inner Mongolia became the Daur people. So Mongols are inheritors of the Khitan.

After him came Emperor Jingzong 景宗 (Shizong's second son, reigned 969-982), then Shengzong 聖宗 (Jingzong's son) who had the longest rule in the Liao, from 982 to 1031. The History of the Liao considers him the most successful ruler, adding that the great part of his success was "due to the instruction and guidance of his mother the dowager." She was Emperor Jingzong's wife, known as Empress Dowager Chengtian 承天 (954-1009) and expert leader who headed civil and military branches of government with equal confidence and authority. Appointed by Emperor Jingzong, her father was both northern prime minister and northern chancellor. She became empress shortly after her father's appointment and gave birth to six of the emperor's eight children, including the future Emperor Shengzong (born 971). During her husband's reign, she managed state affairs during his absences and frequent illnesses and took charge of all matters of war with the Song. She assumed control of government in 982 when Jingzong died and the eleven-year-old Shengzong became emperor (in this case the principle of primogeniture worked smoothly). Before his death, Jingzong had issued an edict allowing her to use the masculine imperial first-person singular pronoun zhen (Wu Zetian had used zhen, but less than a century after Chengtian, Han officials in the Song prohibited dowager-regents from ever using the word).

>>545618895>In terms of military affairs, Khitan women played an especially important role with their outstanding capabilities. It was commented in 'The History of Liao – Biographies of Empresses and Imperial Concubines' that the “Liao people lived on horses, and Empresses and imperial concubines were often good at archery and horsemanship, and they always joined the army in hunting. Women joining the army was the custom, examples including Yingtian (应天, meaning 'Fulfil the Forecasts of Heaven') attacking Shiwei with vigour, Chengtian (承天, meaning ' Heavenly Succession') leading soldiers in Chanyuan (澶渊) and Renyi (仁懿, meaning 'Benevolence and Virtuousness') defeating Chongyuan, all fighting against the enemy in person and unprecedented in bravery." The Yingtian mentioned above referred to Shulü Ping, who selected strong riders from foreigners and Han people and formed an army named shushan (属珊军, literally the 'coral army', meaning it was as valuable as coral), which was composed of 20,000 riders. The Huangtou (黄头) and Xiupo (臭泊), two tribes of Shiwei, once launched a surprise attack when Emperor Taizu of Liao was at war against the Tangut, and Shulü Ping “deployed the troops and waited for them, attacking them with vigour; she inflicted a crushing defeat on the enemy and from then on her name was well known all over the tribes". Chengtian referred to Xiao Chuo, who came to the front line in person and commanded the battle against Song during the Tonghe era. And Renyi referred to Xiao Tali (萧挞里, ?–1076), Empress of Emperor Xingzong, who “personally commanded the imperial guards and defeatd the rebels" when Yelü Chongyuan (耶律重元, 1021–1063), uncle of the Emperor, conspired against the state with his army.

>>545619040>Khitan society maintained some features of the matriarchal system for a long time, and there were three customs indicating society's respect for women: the first was the Regeneration Ritual. It was explained in 'Explanation of Proper Names of Liao in Chinese Characters' (国语解), collected in Volume 116 of The History of Liao, that Regeneration was "the custom of the Liao state, meaning the newborn ritual shall be held every 12 years and was called thus Regeneration. The ritual was only undergone by the Emperor, Empress Dowager, Heir Apparent and irigin (夷离堇, meaning 'chief') and was also called the 'Repeated Birth'". The irigin was the military head, later referred to as Monarch (大王).

Such a rapid spread cannot have occurred by chance; it must have been a result of selection. The lineage is carried by likely male-line descendants of Genghis Khan, and we therefore propose that it has spread by a novel form of social selection resulting from their behavior.https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1180246/

Here, we re-examined the origin of C2*-ST and its associations with Genghis Khan and Mongol populations. We analyzed 34 Y-chromosome sequences of haplogroup C2*-ST and its most closely related lineage. We redefined this paternal lineage as C2b1a3a1-F3796 and generated a highly revised phylogenetic tree of the haplogroup, including 36 sub-lineages and 265 non-private Y-chromosome variants. We performed a comprehensive analysis and age estimation of this lineage in eastern Eurasia, including 18,210 individuals from 292 populations. We discovered that the origin of populations with high frequencies of C2*-ST can be traced to either an ancient Niru’un Mongol clan or ordinary Mongol tribes. Importantly, the age of the most recent common ancestor of C2*-ST (2576 years, 95% CI=1975–3178) and its sub-lineages, and their expansion patterns, are consistent with the diffusion of all Mongolic-speaking populations, rather than Genghis Khan himself or his close male relatives. We concluded that haplogroup C2*-ST is one of the founder paternal lineages of all Mongolic-speaking populations, and direct evidence of an association between C2*-ST and Genghis Khan has yet to be discovered.

>>545622505>Under the Mughals and other Turko-Mongolian regimes of Central Asia, including the Khitan Liao of Mongolia, women regularly participated in political decision making and could lead armies in battle.>There were several powerful imperial women in the Liao, two dowagers in particular. Women played a more active role in the military than ever before in Mongolian and Chinese history. They reflected the ways of the Khitan and other Central Asians who allowed women, especially members of the elite, to participate in both civil and military affairs.>It is clear that Khitan women, like women generally in other steppe tribal nations, possessed considerable freedom and authority compared with women in East Asian sedentary societies. Khitan women to be sure lived in a strongly patriarchal society, yet they nonetheless could possess and freely use wealth and property, they could initiate divorce, and divorced women could freely remarry. In the high elite strata of Khitan society, women could hold important civil and even military positions.

>>545613804>>545629368>More than simply a wife to him and the mother of three of his sons, Empress Yingtian was a skillful military strategist and fighter whom Abaoji consulted on military matters. It was she who is said to have devised the plan, in 915, that Abaoji prepare an ambush and invite to a banquet those Khitan nobles who were demanding that he submit to their authority. At the height of the festivities Abaoji sprang the ambush, killed his opponents, and regained control of the Khitan nation. She commanded her own ordo (tent-cart encampment) with a force of 200,000 cavalry and is also credited with repelling two tribes of Shiwei people who attacked her encampment from the northeast after Abaoji had set off on a campaign against the Dangxiang (or Tangut), people of Mongolian descent living in the northwest of China, in the area of present-day Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. When Abaoji's brother, Lage, attempted a military coup in 913, it was she who was instrumental in putting down the rebellion.>Zhenzong intended to continue his father's policy of not negotiating, but the Liao court resolved to bring the Song to the bargaining table and reap the benefits of their superior military position. All male captives were forced to walk beside a wagon wheel. If their heads were higher than the linchpin (a pin inserted at the end of the axle) they were immediately executed. The wagon wheel was a large wheel used to transport yurts and other goods. This technique was probably used to preempt against revenge attacks that were common between tribes at this time. If one tribe were to attack another, there was always the possibility that there would be a revenge attack soon after. By eliminating the older males, there was less chance of a counterattack from tribes that were in perpetual conflict due to centuries of distrust and robbery. This picture of tall nomads are actually Kazakhs, not Mongols.
