When I was a teen I had an autistic obsession with learning languages like Chinese, Japanese, Russian, German, etc. I didn’t have the time or resources so it was a goal of mine later in life. I was busy working and now I’m 27 and have a good job and time to learn but I hate the idea of learning a foreign language. Not just because it’s a lot of work but also only English feels right. I can’t even watch anime now unless it’s in English dub. Did my brain change?

If you need to learn a language, such as actively placed in a foreign environment with no immediate way out, you will likely learn it at a basic functional level. There's just fewer opportunities after your schooling years to get thrown into a new environment and language
