They really thought we would go harder and truly destroy Iran but they also knew if we didn’t it would kick off a chain of events that makes more severe conflict with Iran inevitable. We don’t have an off ramp now. Diplomacy has been shredded. Sanctions have been made obsolete. Direct action in the straits has been normalized. So we can’t just say “my bad” and go home. We either destroy Iran and release its grip on the straits or we decline precipitously. We genuinely don’t have a choice anymore but to destroy Iran for Israel. They got everything they wanted for their end game.
