Serious question, pick a random part of any state and you will see tiny towns with <1000 people that are hours way from the nearest big city. How do they survive? Is everyone there on welfare? Do they drive 4 hours to the city each day? These used to be tiny railroad towns but the railroads are long gone now

Small shops are enough to supply people with basic necessities and simple jobs that pay little are available. Old people also live off their pensions or welfare .You are right maybe in the sense that many of these small towns are quite fragile and can become ghost towns if anything bad happens. Also younger people tend to leave because there's not much path to growth there

I was born in a tiny town in southern Illinois and my parents moved us to the Nashville (Tennessee) area when I was 5 because the only jobs left in my birth town were drug dealer, thief and mcdonalds.
They are not usually “2 hours away” from a population center. But yes many people do commute an hour plus to work. Lots of factories, lots of farms, think pig farms where you go and bolt a pig in the head and prepare it to be eaten, shit like that for the really rural areas. Or they’re retired old boomers.

The TV reception sucked and there was no internet service there so I mostly just sat on the back porch and shot shit (I was a teenager so I didn't work). Agriculture was the big thing and most of the other kids in the school went home and worked on their families farms after school. Others had parents that were plumbers, owned businesses, shit like that. I'm sure there were people on welfare but it wasn't dead broke like you think.

I live in a small rural village. Some people do WFH, some commute, some have local businesses like carpenters or electricians, some are farmers, many women are SAHMs. It's comfy and peaceful. There's not a single shop here but you can drive about fifteen minutes to get to a grocery store so it's no big deal. I'd never want to live anywhere else.

In my part of Montana you will see small farms. Generally the man works the farm and may have another job. Wife works in town or at a school.
