If you aren't able to get quality LSD or Mushrooms at the festivals you go to, without even seeking them out, then you are going to shitty festivals with bad vibes. Overall this is an example of the degeneration of culture, but even within the counterculture itself this is sad. You can go to any hippie festival in which the majority of the acts are jam bands (rock bands that improvise) and bluegrass bands and people walk around just giving away LSD for free unless you want more than a single dose. If you go to a festival and you don't have 5-10 people walk by your tent within the first hour of setting it up offering you a variety of high quality drugs then you are going to a very sad festival. I remember the first music festival I went to was Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago back in 2010. I thought it would be like a hippie festival that my friends had told me about, but it wasn't. It was really hard to find drugs there. Of course, it wasn't a camping festival, which means it is harder to bring stuff in, and there is less incentive to sell, but still. I had to walk around for hours before I found someone with shrooms. No one was even selling weed, just some people smoking it. A year later I went to Wakarusa with some friends and it was completely different. Everyone high as fuck on psychedelics. An abundance of weed. Molly readily available. And it was all super cheap and everyone had fun. This is why jam band kids shit on EDM so much. The music is shitty (for the most part) and as such it attracts shitty people who are there for reasons other than listening to good music and sharing good times with people. Good music attracts good people who have good drugs. Shitty music attracts shitty people who have shitty drugs (if they have drugs at all).

As others said, it's a great way to meet people who share your taste in music, and those people are usually going to be the most similar to you in how you think, and you can do great things together. But even aside from that, the main reason to go to a music festival was always economics. Instead of paying 20 or 30 dollars to attend a concert of a band you like, you pay 150 or 200 dollars and you go to a music festival with 30 or 40 or 50 bands and you can see way more music for much less money per band. That's really the surface level purpose of music. It provided an affordable way to see a lot of different bands, and you might end up randomly walking by a stage with a band you never heard of and then you really enjoy their music and all of a sudden you have a new band that you like. So, people would go to music festivals for this reason. And bands would be willingly to play at festivals for cheap because it would be great exposure for them. Now all of a sudden when you saw that band name on a flyer you might buy a ticket to their show, whereas if you didn't go to the festival and never heard of them, you wouldn't think to do so. Right now we are in a shitty time where the economics don't make as much sense, and music festivals are getting prohibitively expensive, which is why so many have cancelled over the past couple years
