There has never been a recorded human death by a tarantula. Even the ones with the most potent venom are just very painful but not lethal to humans.Europe has a very big tarantula trade, the only thing they do better than the US is have a better arthropod trade than us and it's very upsetting to me. It's so hard to get good beetles or butterflies or moths here in the US.Anyways I used to keep over 20 tarantulas, they're actually extremely fragile.I assume these smugglers were just trying to bring in some rarer spiders that are protected. They seemed to enjoy having their webs blasted through over and over again. I expect those that don't make their webs in areas of heavy human traffic will eventually out breed those that do, so they'll settle down into something a bit less annoying. I had a backyard weather station and noticed one day that I wasn't getting any wind readings. Went out to the backyard to discover it entirely webbed up by Joro spider webs. Even if the wind was calm when they did it, still it's somewhat impressive they could incorporate objects designed for easy movement.
