>’04 Beslan school siege

I only read about this stuff retrospectively as a westerner zoomer, but reading about this shit is absolutely horrific and the death tolls are unusually large.
What was the milieu of the time and what events am I missing that lead to this wave of terror? I ask because we westerners have literally no oral history regarding these events, and I only read about them through books/online.
