In a vote that concluded Friday, a majority of Cornell University faculty senate members said they do not have confidence in the university’s administration to “effectively address the ongoing crisis of sexual assault” at the Ivy League school.

The resolution came amid a wave of public outrage over the university’s handling of the alleged rape in 2024 of a former student known only as Jane Doe. The student filed a civil lawsuit in September alleging that she had been drugged and raped by seven members of the former Chi Phi fraternity and that university officials had failed to effectively address the matter.

The vote serves as a symbolic, but potent, rejection of Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff, but does not force him to step down or have any formal repercussions.

The measure passed with 55% voting yes, 37% voting no, 3.7% abstaining and 3.7% not voting.

It’s the first time the faculty senate has passed a no-confidence vote, according to the labor union that represents the university teaching staff. Participation in the vote was among the highest of any resolution this year, per the union.

A statement from the thirteen faculty cosponsors of the resolution called the vote a “reckoning” for the university.

“It is a call for real, systemic change; not a slow-moving taskforce, weakly enforced ban on fraternity parties, or expensive PR damage control, but meaningful, evidence-based steps to reduce the incidence of sexual assault on campus and provide significant support to and justice for survivors,” the statement reads.

In a statement on behalf of Cornell University’s Board of Trustees, Board Chair Anne Smalling said that the board “fully supports President Kotlikoff and his administration” following the vote.

“The Board of Trustees remains confident that President Kotlikoff and his administration are the right leaders to thoughtfully and comprehensively address the serious problem of sexual assault on our campus,” Smalling said.

Smalling praised Kotlikoff’s handling of other recent matters, including “restoring federal funding, preserving free speech, and leading the University through Covid [sic].”

She also reiterated the actions the university’s top leadership had taken recently in response to the Jane Doe case.

“They have already taken several important steps to this end, including adding staff to the Cornell Office of Civil Rights, expanding in-person sexual assault prevention education, and hiring more victim advocates,” Smalling said. “The administration will continue to build on that progress with more initiatives to be launched in the weeks and months ahead.”

Several members of the faculty senate, the elected body that represents 3,025 Cornell faculty members and other academic staff, introduced the resolution on Oct. 7.

Faculty senate members had eight days to cast their ballots online. Voting concluded on Friday at noon after hours of debate during at least two separate meetings.

In an Oct. 29 email to faculty senate members containing the link to the online ballot and instructions on how to use it, Cornell Dean of Faculty Chris Schaffer told members they could abstain from the vote.
>>
“Remember that a vote of abstention is an engagement in faculty governance,” Schaffer said in the email, which was reviewed by The Ithaca Voice.

In discussions on Oct. 14, some faculty members argued that the university’s handling of the case was indicative of a broader pattern of neglect. Some shared accounts of their own negative experiences navigating Cornell’s reporting process for alleged sexual harassment or assault.

Others argued that the resolution would not have any binding consequences for the university’s administration and that such a vote may not be the best use of the body’s time.

A 2024 study published in The Journal of Higher Education states that votes of no confidence have increased over the past decade and that nearly 70% of college presidents subjected to such votes leave office within four semesters.

Cornell’s chapter of the Association of American University Professors, the labor union that represents the university’s teaching staff, has previously called on Kotlikoff to resign. Union president David Bateman reiterated the calls in a statement Friday.

“For Cornell to restore good faith and confidence in democratic governance for shaping positive reforms, there must be a change in leadership,” Bateman said. “We also call on the Board of Trustees to affirm the Faculty Senate’s vote and thereby comply with its obligation to shared and democratic governance at Cornell.”

In a previous interview with The New York Times, Kotlikoff said he had “no intention” of resigning.

A resolution to delay the vote of no confidence until after the conclusion of an independent investigation into the matter failed on Oct. 28. The university previously tapped former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates to conduct that probe.

The statement from faculty sponsors called on the university to release the forthcoming report in full, among other potential “next steps” for the coalition of faculty members who supported the resolution.

“We’re looking at next steps for concrete change: addressing hazing and fraternity culture; demanding transparency from the administration, including seeing the full Yates report; reforming the Title IX process and sanctions to hold perpetrators accountable; working with outside law enforcement agencies for independent, trauma-informed investigations; and improving support for survivors,” the statement adds.

The statement from Smalling and the university’s Board of Trustees said the university would share “the [Yates] review’s results and recommendations.”

The Yates investigation is just one of several efforts to re-examine the case and the way local and university officials handled the matter.

The Tompkins County District Attorney’s office has also faced intense public criticism for prosecutors’ decision in 2024 not to pursue criminal charges against the men named in the September civil lawsuit.

The New York State Attorney General’s office has hired outside counsel to handle the reopened criminal investigation into the seven men named in the Sept. 16 civil lawsuit; the Tompkins County Legislature approved $200,000 for an independent audit of the county district attorney’s office.

The men named in the lawsuit have denied any wrongdoing. They have not been charged with a crime in connection with the allegations.

All of those men have denied her allegations, saying that either the sex was consensual or they weren’t involved. The local district attorney initially decided the woman had consented to the encounter, and that no crime had been committed, but the investigation has since been reopened and handed to New York’s attorney general.

Cornell disciplined several of the accused students after a months long Title IX investigation. Two were expelled, two received suspensions and probation, and two were required to write “reflection” papers and complete bystander training. A seventh man had already graduated and was barred from campus, according to records obtained by the New York Times.

"On October 21, one of the accused men texted her to apologize for "how things went down" and said his memory was "kinda fuzzy".[1][11]

"Doe replied that "non [sic] of the sexual stuff was illegal" and that she had liked being with him and the other man in the initial encounter.[1] She also said that her memory was "super clouded too", assured him that they were amicable, and suggested that they could smoke substances together again, though she requested to "leave out the extra 5 billion men and ketamine".[11]"

"Doe maintained friendly correspondence with her male friend until a week following the incident, when she read a comment in an online forum about the fraternity, referring to people who had "gang raped a sophomore".[18]"

Her male friend had assured her that she was welcome at the fraternity's annual Halloween party, which she had been eager to attend.[1]

>"Jane Doe's sworn statement in November of 2024 did not allege that she was drugged against her will or gang raped. On the contrary, Jane Doe’s statement described her participation in drug use and sexual conduct as voluntary, conscious, and consensual.

...

Finally, there is no evidence in Jane Doe's statement indicating that she clearly expressed that she did not consent to the act. According to the statement, each time Jane Doe asked to stop the sexual conduct, the sexual conduct stopped. Thus, with no evidence of a "lack of consent", criminal charges simply could not be sustained." -Tompkins County district attorney Matthew Van Houten

does anyone actually believe that there is a "crisis" of sexual assault at Cornell?

Change the facts.
The attackers were African or Hispanic illegal aliens.
Suddenly, the libtards are saying there is no crisis.
It was just a one off.
Stop exaggerating and creating a non problem.

There was a Law and Order episode that actually covered this topic: A girl faked being raped to save her own ass when she got caught in a threesome with a black and white boy, the two boys got accused and even got expelled, The girl lied because she had a crush on a dude who only fucked non-virgins, soo she convinced two of her friends to make her not a virgin anymore, Janitor catches them and rather then accept she was caught made up the rape. I forgot how it ended by the black kid's father demanded the girl be charged or else he would go to the papers: "White girl fakes rape and walks, Black boy wrongfully accused and loses everything on a lie"
>>
This whole thing is great because a woman got to have her whore fun and then helped to accelerate the downfall of toxic academia. The crazier and more unhinged all these people and school admins act, the sooner we get to see their demise and a return to patriarchy.
