/pol/, would you play the current war as Russia or as Ukraine? I've been making an RTS about it, in the vein of Sudden Strike and Blitzkrieg, with a campaign for each side.

>a Ukrainian and a Russian campaign, nine missions each, plus skirmish against the AI up to 3v3
>73 vehicles and towed guns, 25 tanks: T-54Bs out of storage up to the T-14, Leopard 2s, Challengers, Abrams and Bradleys
>armor per face and angle, pen values from real figures, ERA that only covers part of a face, spall liners, cookoffs that toss the turret
>FPVs on radio or fiber, grenade-dropping quads, Lancets, Shaheds, EW trucks that jam the radio ones
>glide bombs, cluster missiles, TOS-1A, white phosphorus, remote mining
>trenches, dugouts, dragon's teeth, minefields
>buildings come down section by section, wrecks stay and burn
>wounds by body location, plates and helmets, medics, casevac
>thermals at night, mud in autumn, snow in winter
>radio chatter in Russian and Ukrainian, UI in English, German, Russian and Ukrainian

Free demo: vanadislab.itch.io/steel-and-rubble

Might put the full game out for free soon.

I had been a wargame enthusiast for my entire life, but this war has made me forget it.
All the officers on the both sides are worse commanders than 10yo kids who've played some roblox. Most soldiers won't even pass the Breakfast Question. The only ones who have iq higher than average dog are in MIC, but even they are deeper into nepotism than any jeet-CEO company. It's so fucking grim to witness it in our times, when we have fucking AI, which can teach you anything.

As any person with a brain can tell you, rusnigs, chinks, pakis and niggers lie about all their wunderwaffen equipment and the west generally undersells its equipment and capabilities.
How have you overcome this with your games?
Its something most milsims seem to suffer from (DCS in particular), they seem to believe that mudhut dwelling subhumans like rusnigs can actually manufacture 5th gen stealth fighters or anything modern and comparable to western tech.
Do you use OSINT data or rusnig data?

I would only play this if all the Russian soldiers are based off the Putin monke meme and after you kill them they make chimp noises. Then at the end when you finish the game the ghosts of Adolf Hitler, Stepan Bandera and Andrey Vlasov appear and give you a medal while a solemn version of die Fahne Hoch plays in the background.

there definitely shouldn't be this endless line of troops waiting to replace dead ones, in this or some other game, the actual sources of recruitment need to be explored, including the Ukranian "kidnap recruitment"

I've been following everything very close since the day0, and haven't seen a single well-executed operation. It all has been just throwing meat under the bus, and every success has been just dumb luck or attrition.

There have been some good moves like finding udnerground/pipes and appearing behind enemy positions.
But really the problem is due to the nature of Ukraine (open field) and availability of intelligence I think any troop movements are very easy to spot. It's impossible for everyone to be stupid on both sides for 4 years.
>>
>>545877139
The pipes were exactly dumb luck - they are trying pipes everywhere, but it worked only couple of times.
And unfortunately it is very possible for everyone to be retarded. Huge amount of soldiers lose eyes even from wood splinters at their positions because they can't even be bothered to wear fucking $10 glasses - while for any actual complex ops it's one nonstop clusterfuck.
>>

>mfw another AI slop reskinned RTS
Ukraine war is dominated by artillery, drones and small infantry units, I'd play a war strat game based on those things alone instead of another military RTS that's 95% the same as every other RTS.
>>
>>545879645
it's not though, it plays like old Sudden Strike 1 and 2 and Blitzkrieg 1 titles. That's actually rare / niche compared to what's available.
>>
>>545870427
Will you allow full modding support and tools? Maybe open source?

Can this be played on a shitty old pc with low system specs?

Where are the drones? Have option to allow drones or not, or have a delay drone availability option to show drones showing up later in the war and making bigger impact as time goes on.

Will there be behind the scene upgrades like industrial opens to give greater resources to use on battlefield like HOI4 or in field unit upgrades during active gameplay?

Can a campaign mode be done to have a bit of a sense of progressing and keeping your units alive give veterans that might be able to carry over to next mission or map?

Any voice acting? Could use AI for voices.

Add in foreign mercenaries and support troops or volunteers.

Can units run out of ammo or fuel, or capture enemy weapons and vehicles?

Looks kind neat, now just gotta worry if its got viruses or spyware.
>>
>>545879780
yeah as long as it's got something different, I just prefer higher level military strat games and the Ukie war would be great setting for it especially with good artillery gameplay.
>>
>>545879837
>modding / open source
Made in Godot 4.3 with GDScript; unit stats, armour and weapons are plain data tables and each mission is one script, so it's moddable, just no official tools yet. I’ll look into it definitely.
>shitty old pc
Probably. Godot's lightest renderer (any GPU with OpenGL 3.3), 64-bit Win/Linux, ~3 GB RAM used in a medium skirmish, 8 GB to be safe. On a weak PC turn off "Colour grading and weather effects" in Options and play small maps.
>where are the drones
In, lots: FPVs (radio and fibre-optic), recon and bomber quads, Baba Yaga, Lancet, Switchblade, Geran-2, plus EW trucks that jam them and AA and MANPADS that shoot them down. Campaigns lean on them more as they go; the last Ukrainian op is literally "The Drone Line". No skirmish switch to disable or delay them yet (maybe later).
>HOI4-style upgrades
No strategy layer, it's fixed forces like Sudden Strike. Skirmish gives manpower per minute to requisition units and fire missions. In the field men dig in, sandbag houses and tanks, crews repair, supply trucks rearm and refuel.
>campaign with veterans
Already in: 2 campaigns x 9 ops, and men who earn rank carry it into the next op. Rank = steadier under fire, faster reloads.
>voice acting
Radio chatter in Russian and Ukrainian, each side its own language, subtitled. Already AI voices (Piper TTS).
>mercs / volunteers
Not as separate units but a good idea. Western kit is in though: Leo 1/2, Abrams, Challenger 2, Bradley, Marder, CV90, Stryker, HIMARS, Gepard etc.
>ammo, fuel, capture
Ammo runs out, vehicles burn fuel and stop when dry, supply trucks fix both. Crews can climb into abandoned vehicles, enemy ones too, and take them. Enemy soldiers can surrender. Picking up enemy weapons isn't in.
>viruses / spyware
Plain single-player Godot build, no network code at all, no telemetry. SmartScreen warns because the exe isn't code-signed. Run it through VirusTotal if you want to be sure.
>>
>>545870427
Sounds pretty cool so long as it isn't too resource heavy (I'm on an old machine). I'll probably check it out when I get home from work.

>>545870427
Can my Ukraine soldiers buttrape each other for morale improvement?
Also morale system is a must
>>
>>545870427
Too complicated. Just give me a RA clone with some logistics mechanics, so an enemy offensive can be wrecked not by physical destruction but by destroying enough of those funny trucks delivering them fuel, ammo and other supplies.
>>
>>545880632
>Also morale system is a must
Morale system is always a mistake, you always end up with a shit show like in the old Centurion game.
>Player: ah yes, now I will use my clever tactics and destroy the enemy with massive casualties on my side
>NPC unit: lol no I'm going home
>Player: FFFFUUUU-
>>
>>545876733
this is what a guy in officer school told me, back before the 100% drone coverage no man's land became a thing
that they're made to watch footage all the time and both sides move like absolute retards, with zero regard for the reality on the field

and if what they're taught in officer school holds true, either side could've fought out a complete victory under competent leadership by now
and this scares them shitless since they don't presume that every man on both sides from NCO level and above just happens to be a complete retard, so it must mean that the fundamentals of HATO doctrine that they're taught maybe aren't that solid
he told me their teachers were pretty open about this and they were as dumbfounded as the cadets
>>
>>545880276
Just watched the video, looks pretty good if this is your first release/demo. Wouldn't mind throwing a few dollars your way to support a indie dev.

Having some easy to use modding tools and ready made assets for us to play around with would help allow players to expand the gameplay with their own map designs and create a cottage industry of players contributing to the game. But perhaps see how popular this will turn out before investing time in adding modding support.

One thing about these games is I played alot of RTS games, I sometimes get annoyed at the amount of micromanagement I sometimes have to do and forget that I leave units standing in the middle of the field only to remember them after like 5 mins and they are dead or dying.
Would you give the units some basic survival Ai where they will move on their own or seek cover, or perhaps desert or route from combat or seek nearby shelter? A type of survival mechanism due "commander neglect"? Perhaps with option to "turn off Ai".

Would we be allowed to go crazy and build defensive lines or fortresses and really go overkill to the point we've rebuilt something akin to the Atlantic wall Maginot line. Perhaps it can be a game mod or defense map where we just spend 10-15 minutes making defenses and positioning units and have the AI attack or throw mass of man and steel at you and we try to hold the line.
>>
>>545870427
Sounds fun. I will check it out.
I had a similar idea with Iran israel war. But they are rocketing and bombing only. I have no clue how to make that interesting.

How come you can't drag the map around with the mouse?
Is that how it is in Sudden Strike?
Never played this type of RTS before but it feels weird to me.
>>
>>545879837
oh and I forgot. I have a private git set up. Maybe I will make that one public in the near future, would be kinda cool to see if someone wants to fork the game and come up with new stuff or improve the game
>>545881304
>a few dollars
appreciate it anon, full game is free now but would definitely appreciate a tip on itch for anyone that wants to support the development. Right now I am working with a net negative, but that’s okay as it brings me joy to work on the game
>modding
definitely looking into it, would love to see what people make. it's godot and unit stats and missions are plain script files, so it's a good base
>survival ai for neglected units
there but basic. left alone, men go prone under fire, shift a few steps to cover (walls, wrecks, craters, trenches, trees), dig in if they stand around in the open, hit the dirt when a drone comes over and run from grass fires. heavy fire can make them break and run back to their mates, or surrender if cut off. vehicles pop smoke when hit
what they don't do yet is look for shelter further away, so a squad forgotten in an open field still gets chewed up. on the list
>atlantic wall defence mode
love it, looking at how to fit it in. wanted more defensive building in skirmish anyway, the hard part is the AI using it without trapping itself lol
>>
>>545870427
cool proyect but does it needs to be about a current war?? it screams shitty cashgrab like the syria civil war game
>>
>>545882169
understandable, might look like I am just doing it to garner attention but I honestly just like the modern setting in the Sudden Strike style

>I had a similar idea with Iran israel war. But they are rocketing and bombing only. I have no clue how to make that interesting.
There is a mod for C&C Generals (Israel vs Syria) but it was a bit bullshit and too hard, keep in mind I've played all sorts of mods/challenges and I am not bad at the game.
Either Israel or Syria are too bad, forgot which one it is.

>>545882057
>AI trap and being dumb.
I was told that the trick someone found is to make the ai move backwards or back up before before trying to moving forward and maybe add some randomized element in the pathfinding to the intended destination. No idea how that would work as I am not programmer.
