Undertaker needed a rival, because back then it would be weird for a zombie man to fight regular humans like Michaels or Hart. Eventually the feud got stale so Foley had to bring out the other characters, like homosexual icon "DudeLove". WWF carpet bombed the fans with irrelevant lore over and over, so it seemed like these gimmicks mattered and had history. Mick took enough thumbtacks to the dick that eventually, the Rock gave him a title shot, and the rest is history.
