Ambrose was the mouth piece in the beginning but around the Wyatt feud it was obvious he was placed to be the weak link. In reality, Punk was the leader, but it got retconned to be Triple H after he left.

First year or so Dean was the de facto leader. They made a point to say that three of them worked together as one but Dean was clearly the one they had most faith in as a singles guy. Rollins was left to carry Roman as tag guys but both of them are much weaker promos than Dean. The Shield was all about getting Roman over though
