What happened was that Sabu changed his gimmick from Sabu the elephant boy (his gimmick when he worked with the Sheik) into more of a mad man mental patient, originally his ring entrance was him being carted to the ring in a straight jacket and muzzle. And being a mad man from some foreign land he of course had never seen arena lights. Hence the whole pointing up "WTF ARE THOSE?!!" thing.He dropped the gimmick because it took too much time to get out of those restraints every time.Source: one of his many shoots.

This is actually a little known fact but Sabu has his own worker that works the spotlights and the lights up in the rafters of every show he goes to. It's sabu's way of giving him a nod of appreciation
