The problem with late stage Phil headlining PLE’s is that he can’t do what he does best (and what fans actually still enjoy about him), which is be on mic cutting promos. PLE’s, classically, are about “no more talk, let’s settle it in the ring,” which means all Phil does at PLE’s is wrestle, which is what he does worst, at this stage of his career (“worst” at least from an entertainment standpoint). In short, if I’m a fan thinking of buying a WWE ticket where Punk is advertised, I’m more likely to buy a random Smackdown ticket than a PLE ticket because I at least know Punk will be on mic at the Smackdown show, which is mainly why I want to see Punk. I’m not interested in watching 48yr old Phil do chops, hip tosses, and yay-boo punches for 30 minutes. Same as Gunther, honestly.
