Miu Watanabe needed this and she knew it.

Losing the Princess of Princess title to Yuki Arai had threatened to define 2026 on her terms rather than Watanabe's, and with the spotlight firmly on other TJPW stars - including Yuki Kamifuku's impending retirement dominating the conversation - the risk of the year slipping away was real. The Tokyo Princess Cup, as it so often does, arrives at exactly the right moment.

The defending champion opened her campaign in Hamamatsu against Ren Konatsu, who had the entire arena behind her in her hometown return. Shoulder Bites, Aries Comet, roll-up attempts - Konatsu threw everything she had at the situation and the crowd noise made it feel closer than it probably was. Watanabe was never truly troubled, absorbing it all before shutting the door with a Canadian Backbreaker submission.

Back-to-back tournament wins would go a long way toward salvaging what's been a frustrating year. Judging by her recent interviews, Watanabe is clearly in the mood to make that argument loudly…

You or whoever wrote this article have some rather delusional takes. Miu started this year with what will probably be the MOTY in TJPW against Suzume: no other matches got close to that level so far, and even though the Princess Cup and Wrestle Princess VII will give us some bangers, Miu vs Suzume will probably still stand on top at the end of year.

The rivalry against Yuki Arai was very interesting and full of tension, something that we rarely see in TJPW. The match itself was okay, not bad but at the same time inferior compared to Miu vs Suzume or the recent Arai vs Yamashita. But that doesn't change the fact that Miu was in the main event of the biggest TJPW show ever.

Also, judging from this article, it almost seems like Miu hasn't done anything relevant after Grand Princess, but that's far from being true. First of all, she had a great 3-Way Match against Miyu Yamashita and Mizuki in Las Vegas, arguably the best TJPW match of the year wrestled outside of Japan. Then she won the Princess Tag Team Titles at Yes! Wonderland and, last but not least, she had 2 very good title defences against Mizuki/Uta and Kyoraku Kyomei.

So yeah, saying Miu has had a "frustrating" year doesn't make any sense, and you can't define her entire year with 1 (one) single loss. She's still the ace of the current era, she doesn't need to be the POP Champion and to be honest, she doesn't need to win the Princess Cup either. All she needs to do is to keep having great matches and to help the next generation. In that regard, the match that you mentioned against Ren Konatsu was objectively the best match of Ren's career, so that's another accomplishment for Miu.

To be honest, as a Miu Watanabe fan, I feel disappointed by the fact that she doesn't get the recognition that she deserves. She is the total package: she has charisma, she has a beautiful sexy muscular body, she can be scary or wacky depending on the context, and most importantly she has been the GOAT in TJPW since 2022, wrestling the match of the year for 5 consecutive years at this point.

And yet, since she lost the title to Yuki Arai, the attendances at Korakuen Hall have increased from around 700 to well over 1000, reaching even over 1200 at Summer Sun Princess. Of course I'm happy that TJPW is white hot right now and I don't have anything against Yuki Arai... but this feels a little bit unfair. Do japanese people, and I'm talking about those 300 who started buying tickets after Grand Princess, have no standards at all? Do they prefer to watch Yuki Arai vs Yuki Kamifuku instead of Miu Watanabe vs Shoko Nakajima? It makes no sense. Yeah I get, Yuki Arai is a former mainstream idol, but it's not like she has been singing or dancing in TJPW. As a wrestler. she is a 7/10, maybe a 8/10 if I'm being really generous. Meanwhile, Miu Watanabe has been busting her ass for years, and this is the reward?

Another frustating thing is that, despite being clearly the best wrestler in TJPW, she never gets booked overseas for whatever reason. Yuka Sakazaki got herself an AEW contract, Miyu Yamashita has been booked multiple times in ROH and AEW and she always fumbled. MLW and TJPW had a partnership for a while and they decided to make Shoko Nakajima their champion. What about Miu? If only she had one opportunity, she would've got over in an instant. I think there is a legit case to be made that Miu Watanabe is the most underrated joshi wrestler right now.

I have no idea who those Yuki motherfuckers even are I'm a casual for Japanese wrestling atm
Miu has fun matches but she doesnt get booked in the West as much/as strong as Shoko or Miyu because:
>her finisher is a flapjack, it fucking sucks especially compared to things like her dragon sleeper giant swing
>her power spots like the double giant swing would be harder to do on bigger American women
>Joshi cant cut English promos so are reliant on visuals and gimmick plus matches to get over in the West
>Shoko has an easier to pick up look and gimmick (although she should really be a Princess Mononoke anime tribal wolfgirl, not dorky kaiju midget)
>Shoko's ringstyle is genuinely unique between her impressive unorthodox technical work, and her unorthodox highflying that makes use of her short stature in ways nobody else really does, so she stands out
>Miyu Yamashita's ringstyle is easier to quickly pick up on for cool clips because of her range of nasty looking strikes, Miu is impressively strong but it tends to require the right opponent for her to be as at-a-glance impressive

Chihiro Hashimoto does a lot of what Miu does but better with a more distinctive look, Miu is basically just a standard Joshi idol looking girl but with beefy arms, and Chihiro also doesnt get booked in the West.

The Japanese women I'd be looking to hire, from my casual clips-and-odd-match viewings, if I wanted a Joshi section of a western company, would be Shoko, Chihiro, Miyu, CHIAKI (dimes look), Suzume (looks different, RKO always dimes finish), Miu, and Konami, in that order. Everyone else blurs together and hasn't got an easy hook for fans to latch on to.
