Part of me thinks it was because the 2nd half of his career was filled with stop start runs because of suspensions and injuries. So he never stayed too long before going away and coming back. He also always had strong booking and never did anything to bury himself other than the bray vortex but somehow his legacy didn't get tarnished at all from that.
