Yeah this is a weird feud. You’ve got two babyfaces. One babyface is intentionally acting like a prick, but he’s perma-over so fans aren’t going to boo him. Punk can bully KO into oblivion and cross whatever line he wants without any negative consequences. The other babyface is trying to play the role of the spurned overlooked disrespected underdog, but in these first two promos, KO has not been very good. His delivery has been shaky and he sounds like he knows Punk is better than him on the mic. (The most compelling part of last night’s rap battle was when he finally screamed LOOK AT ME WHEN IM TALKING TO YOU.) Other than that, though, pretty lackluster. So…the returning underdog who we *should* be rooting for can’t deliver the lines well enough to generate the pops, and the prick we *should* be booing because he’s acting like a jackass has reached unbooable status. So that’s a weird dynamic on its own. Then you factor in the content of WHAT they’re bickering over, and it’s silly semi-shoot angles from 20 years ago which sound really petty by today’s standards of tubby shitters wrestling with shirts on and make Punk sound like the reasonable one when he says, “Really? That’s what’s still bothering you?” And again, because KO hasn’t been great on the mic, he didn’t go a great job of conveying WHY that still bothered him. He just comes off like a petty grudge holder who can’t move on from that time he was bullied 20 years ago.And then, as was mentioned, because it’s semi-shoot, it has no kayfabe connection to any other story or character arc currently happening.
