When people complain about flips they're not really complaining about wrestlers flipping their opponents around. That's natural to the moves.
The type of flips people get sick of are flips done for the sake of flipping, like flying maneuvers off the top rope and somersaults and other gymnastic maneuvers that have no place in traditional wrestling. They add flash and excitement in small doses but are way overdone at this point.
Uemura vs Oiwa was a great match because it was back to basics but done in a competent way. If it's the start of a trend in New Japan the future is bright. It felt like a big deal in a way nothing else has there for years.
