This might sounds a little hyperbolic, but this match was the mortal wound for AEW. Its the antithesis of the "NJPW Golden Era" style that AEW has bastardised and made their house style. Two home grown talents, presenting a modern evolution of wrestling, which already makes AEW look outdated. And for a company that built its brand on being a fresh alternative, thats a worrying postion to be in. Flips, finisher spam, reversals and 1 count kick outs are boring now. No wonder MJF has been so shook on X (formerly known as Twitter). He knows his days are numbered
that's cool and all anon but I'm still gonna GRIP your shit
>>21034698We all gripping now
Which one's Gogo Zemo
It'd be great if this was the beginning of New Japan being actual wrestling again, but it won't. It'll still be kickpad indy shitters slapping their legs, trading forearms and brawling in the crowd forever while never getting counted out.
AEW fucking sucks.
>>21034771There'll always be Oiwa and Yuya at the top of the cards going forward along with Boltin and Wolf being fingertips away from them. As long as I get to see more guys expand on this style, I can handle Tsuji thigh slaps or Takeshita blatantly clapping his fucking hands (ok maybe not that)
>>21034684But isn't this more damning of the WWE safe-style they've been running with? Like why hasn't Randy Orton have a match as electrifying as this, that motherfucker loves headlocks!
>>21034832Newman's thigh slaps were absolutely egregious during the G1, so dont forget him
>>21034824AEW fucking rocks
>>21034684This match is better than anything that has been done in the West this year. Better than AEW, WWE, and TNA by far.
>>21034856I didn't include WWE because its the market leader. It's so far ahead that it can be (and is) utter slop and survive indefinitely. AEW is supposed to be the alternative, that's what they build their brand on. So this is damaging to them in a way it won't affect WWE
>>21034684Moving back to a clean, simple style makes sense for our current time. Everything else is so overdone and no one gives a shit about any of it. It's actually less boring now than all the other bullshit everyone spams every match.Keeping things clean gives it that classic prestige. But the real beauty of it is that it will get boring eventually. And when that happens, you can slowly reintroduce some of the stuff that's currently overdone and that will feel fresh too. It's actually not to different from what I think Bischoff and Hogan were trying to accomplish with RAF. By taking things back to their foundation you can slowly make stuff interesting again.
>>21034684>presenting a modern evolution of wrestlingit was just a 90' NJPW match. as the Italians figured out with their renaissance, you gotta go back
>>21035471That's the thing though. When everything has been done, backwards IS forward. It's a cycle, not a progression.
>>21034684Its pretty funny that the "enjoy all wrestling" crowd don't like it when their "little bro promotion" is out-doing them
>>21035540It absolutely drives them bonkers that they might not be on the cutting edge of pro-wrestling anymore.Pro-wrestling isn't a line. It's a cycle. Advancement at this point necessitates progressing back to the fundamentals. A reset. And it scares them because they realize this in their hearts but meanwhile the style upon which AEW is built is the antithesis of all that's fresh and necessary moving forward.
>>21034684oiwa sexo
>>21035483>It's a cycle, not a progressionIt never has to be, as long as you can maintenance and protect
I just watched it. I don’t get it. I’m a midwit I guess please somebody help me. And I watched plenty of 2017 era NJPW. What was so good about this?
>>21035753Those of us who like it like it because it's the opposite of 2017 era NJPW, which is overdone and stale now.The match was simple. stuck to the fundamentals, never left the ring, didn't involve fancy flips, didn't use ref bumps, didn't lean into chop fests... tied in with the build of being the finals match of the biggest tournament of NJPW's year, it was just really refreshing for those of us who regularly follow New Japan.Speaking for myself, I'm burned out on all that other crap.
>>21034684very well said my friend AEW DOES fucking suck
What's funny is that the bangerino style, the AEW style, the one count kick outs, delayed selling, the finisher spam, the reversal spam, etc, is already a bastardization of the 90s AJPW King's Road style.90s AJPW had dives, high spots, neck drops, you choppa me spots, but what AEW misses is what NJPW demonstrated so well in this recent match: the struggle for every move to land. In AJPW, guys are fighting out of every hold. When Misawa gets somebody in a Tiger Driver position, they will try to fight out of it for like 2-3 minutes straight. There will be multiple attempts to even get an opponent into that position because they're fighting so hard to try and get out of it.In AEW, guys just transition smoothly from big move to big move and they stumble around a little and then lay on the ground after no-selling 5 lariats from each other so the audience knows when to clap.I've said it before and I'll say it again, the NJPW Dojo is the best in the world because it teaches fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. Eventually, it will hatch guys who understand the value of them and that's what has happened here.
>>21035753Some of it is that we've been watching both of these guys since they were young lions and many of us felt they weren't getting appropriate pushes in favor of the other younger guys and the dads. It was cathartic in addition to what >>21035761 stated. Also NJPW has been leaning incredibly heavily on outside malarkey. Every fucking match has someone thrown into the audiences chairs. It's fine when done limited (and the crowds do get a kick out of it) but its every show.
