Butcher's optimal role was big guy heel jobber, because he looks the way you imagine a pro wrestler looks. But AEW already has their pick of those guys, just look at the Don Callis Family. When even Josh Alexander can't get higher than midcard heel, your roster is just a little too deep for a guy like The Butcher.

I liked him but I never saw him as more than muscle in a stable for a guy higher up the card. I was surprised as faction happy as Tony is he was never used in that way because Butcher and Blade had a decent enough look for it even if they weren't that great in the ring.

He was already in his 40s when he started wrestling. Never had the chance to hone his craft in the ring. He also had an unusually high pitched voice for a guy his size. Still, I'm a believer in the Paul Heyman school of booking where anyone can get over if you book them to their strengths and disguise their weaknesses. His look was absolute dimes and it was even more pronounced in a fed like AEW where he was surrounded with skinny twinks at all times. Pity he didn't break into wrestling when he was a bit younger.

The Blade got a serious back injury. I think he was on the shelf for nearly 2 years. I still think Tony fumbled The Butcher though. He had a great look and his matches were fun. I think he was another victim of the "Probably can't hang with Kenny, Ospreay, etc.. so he's only going to go so far in AEW" mindset. If he was 10 years younger he might have had a shot.

They could’ve been a great tag team act, with the Butcher as a solid midcarder and main event threat. And Williams originally wanted to be a pro wrestler and grew up watching wrestling in the 80s and 90s, he understood pro wrestling better than the self-marks in the ring nowadays. The problem was that he transitioned to pro wrestling in his very late 30s and was already over 40 when he debuted in AEW. He was simply too old, guy started at the age when others usually slow down or even retire
