Just to expand on my (>>21254638) point, almost 20 years ago I had an unexpected breakup with a girl I was seeing at the time. I went to a place we sometimes went and got absolutely hammered. Like I don't even know how I was able to operate a vehicle hammered. Anyway, I was so fucking drunk that I got lost trying to get home and ended up stopping at a gas station to ask directions. The Indian guy said he didn't know and told me I should ask the cop that was heading my way. So, drunk off my ass and reeking of booze, I did.
Instructions in brain, I got back in the car, drove about half a mile, then got pulled over by the cop from before. Pretty open and shut case.
I ended up pleading no contest. I paid a fine of like $500, did no jail time, kept my license, had to go to outpatient treatment for like six months, and afterwards it all got expunged from my record. That's the value of having a good lawyer.

Plea deals are the heart of the judicial system. Trials are expensive and cost tax payers money they don't want to spend on trials. The end result is that they offer defendants a carrot in the form of sentences that are way less than they deserve if those defendants don't have criminal records. I don't know the details but his lawyer probably pleaded it down to battery.

Is that really your bar for wrongdoing? He didn't kill the guy so a minor slap on the wrist is appropriate? He beat an unconscious man into a coma and disfigured his face. That's pretty extreme violence that warrants a year or more in prison. The pathetic fine he was given, which is chump change to somebody as wealthy as him, would barely cover his victim's medical bills. The justice system has utterly failed if it has decided it's OK to let someone like that roam the streets after a three month vacation.
