Welcome!

>Professional wrestling shows are held all over the world, and in recent years, many fans from overseas have been attending wrestling events in Japan. In fact, the reverse is also becoming increasingly common, with Japanese promotions holding shows overseas. This time, using Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling as a case study, we will consider the benefits and risks of expanding into overseas markets. We spoke with Yoichiro Shimizu, founder and coordinator of TOKYO STORY, Tokyo Joshi's local partner in Texas, USA, and Akira Takahashi, Managing Executive Officer at Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling who is also responsible for the promotion's overseas business, about TJPW's Texas tour.
>Takagi: Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling will be touring Texas in the United States from December 4 to 6 this year. This tour builds on the experience gained from the previous two Texas tours. I'd like to speak with Yoichiro Shimizu, who serves as our local coordinator, and Akira Takahashi, who handles Tokyo Joshi's overseas shows. First of all, Shimizu-san, we first met... about ten years ago at an intercultural exchange event, wasn't it? You were known as the “Texas Oil Tycoon” (laughs).
>Shimizu: My main business is oil extraction in Texas. To be honest, I wasn't interested in professional wrestling, but I happened to meet Takagi-san again in September 2024 after a long time apart.
>Takagi: At the time, I heard that, alongside your oil business, you were running a business promoting Japanese culture in Texas... including a gacha-gacha capsule toy shop. I thought this was an opportunity.
>Shimizu: The oil industry had enjoyed a favorable tailwind for a long time, but during the Biden administration, there was a campaign to bring the fossil fuel industry to an end. I thought it would be risky to continue doing business solely in oil, so I decided to create new business channels. That's when I realized that what I most wanted to do was promote Japanese culture in Texas.
>>
>>21381074
>I started with gacha-gacha capsule toys, then began organizing events featuring Japanese sake and cosplay. Around that time, Takagi-san briefly told me about Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling. The words “women's professional wrestling” sent a jolt through me, and I thought, “This is it!” When I subsequently researched the history of women's wrestling, I discovered that it was a distinctly Japanese form of entertainment with a history spanning more than 50 years. That really got me fired up.
>Takagi: And you contacted Takahashi-san straight away, didn't you?
>Takahashi: We held our first meeting in September 2024. Things moved incredibly quickly, but since I'm also the point of contact for AEW, I already had experience and know-how regarding obtaining visas for overseas events. Our goal isn't simply to hold wrestling shows overseas. I believe Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling has a very strong affinity with Japanese pop culture, including idols, anime, fashion, and characters, so I knew we would be bringing Japanese culture with us. From a business perspective, I think it's important to be a first mover. There are various risks involved in overseas markets, but you won't know unless you take the plunge. The appeal of an overseas market is that you can create a market from scratch. Texas in particular has an economy with a GDP comparable to that of an entire country, so I felt it had enormous potential. This may bring us to Lanchester's strategy, but when I thought about building an economic sphere with passionate fans, I felt Texas was a good fit. By returning consistently, I hope local fans will be able to experience firsthand the growth stories of the wrestlers and the promotion.
>Takagi: The first Texas tour was in July 2025, and finding venues was a struggle, wasn't it?
>Shimizu: “There weren't any venues that were quite right. Texas is so vast that there are plenty of open, flat spaces, but not many with arena-style seating.
>>
>>21381077
>In the end, we were able to hold the first Dallas show at a public sports facility, Forney ISD The OC. It has arena seating and a large screen, and we'll be returning to the same venue this December. In Houston, we held the show at the shopping center where our gacha-gacha shop is located, POST Houston. The wrestlers walked down a staircase shaped like an X to make their entrances. In Japan, people might not necessarily think of doing things that way, but we decided to make the most of the situation and give it a try.”
>Takagi: Attendance went well, didn't it?
>Shimizu: “Instagram exploded. An eight-second video quickly reached one million views. To be honest, ticket sales hadn't been particularly strong after the initial rush, but once that video came out, sales took off all at once.”
>Takagi: In Japan, when a wrestling video goes viral, you might gain more followers, but that doesn't necessarily translate directly into ticket sales. It really made me feel the cultural differences. Texas also has a strong wrestling tradition. Going back a long way, the Funks grew up in Amarillo, Texas.
>Takahashi: There are a lot of wrestling fans, and the atmosphere gets incredibly lively. One morning, someone staying at our hotel approached us during breakfast and asked, “What are you here for?” We replied, “We're here for a wrestling show,” and they said, “This, right?” and showed us that very video. They seemed to have been watching wrestling for a long time. If people like that already recognize Tokyo Joshi, then I felt there was an established foundation for us there. We're very conscious of bringing Tokyo Joshi's existing package over as it is, rather than localizing it.
>Takagi: The second tour, in March 2026, included a show at SXSW (South by Southwest), so it had a somewhat different atmosphere. However, we ran into trouble when it was time to return to Japan...
>Shimizu: In terms of total attendance, the second tour drew a bigger crowd.
>>
>>21381078
>The audience response was also good. More than half the attendees were repeat customers, so the impact of the first tour translated directly into attendance for the second. Around 80% of the audience were Texans.
>Takahashi: We happened to be there at a time when airport staff in the United States weren't being paid. The planes were operating according to schedule, but the staff at the gates leading to the flights had already gone home, so we couldn't get through security. Even when we asked the staff who remained, the information was confused, and there were police carrying machine guns all over the place. In the end, our luggage was sent ahead on the flights we had originally been scheduled to take, without us. We had to rebook all the flights for those of us who'd been left behind, and somehow managed to get back in time for the Ryogoku Kokugikan show. I constantly had to make decisions within five minutes to ensure that the wrestlers could return safely to Japan. We had multiple connecting journeys that each took five to six hours, resulting in an utterly chaotic trip that lasted a total of 50 hours. However, thanks to the experience we'd accumulated from previous trips, and the efforts of the JAL staff to recover our luggage, both the wrestlers and their belongings arrived in time, and we were able to hold the Ryogoku show safely. Obtaining visas for the United States has also become difficult, with appointment slots for interviews at the US Embassy heavily congested and the application process taking a long time. Fortunately, thanks to our accumulated know-how, everyone has already obtained their visas. Now we just need to stay focused and make sure everyone can enter the country safely when the time comes for the shows.
>Shimizu: “In December, we'll be holding shows at a rodeo venue, Pasadena Rodeo Arena. It's a spacious venue, and I think the wrestlers will make their entrances through the gates normally used for the animals.
>>
>>21381080
>The title of this tour is TJPW Texas Stampede II – It Ain't Our First Rodeo! The grammatically standard form would be ‘isn't,’ but we chose ‘ain't,’ which is commonly used in the American South. It's slang that basically means, ‘This isn't our first time—we know what we're doing.’ We'll also have food stalls set up before the wrestling shows, like a festival food court, and we're planning to create a real festival atmosphere.”
>Takagi: The shows on December 4 and 5 will be in Houston at the rodeo venue, and the December 6 show will be in Dallas. Are there any differences between producing shows overseas and in Japan?
>Takahashi: It's difficult to bring our entire production team from Japan, so we work together with local staff. However, the local teams are extremely small and efficient. One person might be responsible for video, lighting, and sound all at once. They somehow manage to make it work, but the language barrier made things nerve-racking at first. That said, the people involved are professionals, so things tend to get sorted out fairly quickly. I think that's partly a characteristic of the local working culture. We also need to ensure that emergency medical response and security are properly handled, and we've now established procedures and know-how for those areas as well.
>Shimizu: When it comes to attracting an audience, social media is obviously important, but there are also methods specific to the United States. We've been making effective use of advertising in a particular location.
>Takagi: First, you'll need to make December a success. What are your plans for the future?
>>
>>21381084
>Shimizu: I want to expand Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling across the entire United States. But rather than relying solely on our current business model of gate receipts—in other words, getting people to physically attend shows—I want to create content based on manga and anime. The idea is to build a world in which the fictional universe and the world experienced at real-life wrestling events subtly overlap and synchronize with one another. People call America the land of the free, but there are still plenty of difficulties and restrictions unique to American society. In particular, traditional ideas about how women are supposed to live their lives remain deeply rooted. I believe Tokyo Joshi's slogan, “KAWAII × DREAM × STRONG — Wrestling That Makes You Look Forward to Tomorrow,” could be a powerful and appealing message in America.
>Takahashi: At the moment, only a limited number of our wrestlers travel overseas. In the future, I'd love for everyone to be able to go together and hold a major show in America.

As cool as that would be, I still think the anime should focus on an original character with the Tjpw joshi making appearances and serving as teachers. Basically the story of a girl that finds out about Tjpw and wants to become a wrestler and then becomes a trainee and then makes her debut. We already got a short manga out of it. Time to make it into an anime.
