Darkness, to Ninety-Nine the absence of light mattered little to her, not when she could see fine regardless of the environment. A lot of time has passed since she was ordered to wait in the Hunting Grounds. Ninety-Nine’s tail held on to a thick branch as she hung upside down. She wondered why the chaplain took so long when he was never late for training.

“Bah… I’m so bored.”

Then it struck.

From the shadows, deep within the artificial jungle, a whisper of a bolt rang ever so softly. The bolt hit her chest, knocking her off the balance. Ninety-Nine’s hips twisted and her feet aimed for the floor first. The wet mud squelched underneath Ninety-Nine’s weight. Her tail lifted up and her eyes opened wide.

Enemy, no… Battle-masters, that was a bolter.

The vox intercom throughout the jungle crackled before it spoke.

“Your new test, Ninety-Nine. You have faced xenos of various size and hunting methods, now it’s time to face the most dangerous killers, astartes. Your goal is to engage in a mock battle and win.”

Her experience against her battle-masters were limited, with few engagements against traitors and in sparring. In a mock engagement? Not once. Ninety-Nine head tilted to the left, then to the right, she did not hear the familiar weighty footsteps of the battle-master’s armors.

Also, now that our girl had her first Int "limit break", how intelligent is she, actually?
Average human intelligence without common sense/common-but-not-extremely-common knowledge but with battle knowledge instead? Still a bit "special", but can go far beyond it when she locks in? Another level entirely?
>>

Average human intelligence with some common sense taught by her Sister Catherine with knowledge that the average Imperium citizen would not know normally such as existence of Chaos and such. She's still a bit special but she has the capacity to grow, that is her greatest strength, the ability to grow.

Ninety-Nine sought out her opponents under the shadows. Underneath the cold, uncaring shadows, Ninety-Nine found herself traversing more than seeking her opponents. Wherever they were, she was aware three days had passed. In the midst of their game of cat and mouse, an alarm blared all across the jungle. An alarm so rare, so frightening, she finally caught the stunned battle master.

“A kin-ork?”

The panopticon of the room displayed a gargantuan ship, metal bits protruded like jagged bits, they were Deathskulls, one that Ninety-Nine studied during her first few days in Watch Fortress Erioch. The Deathskulls were the ork clans that fought the tyranids for before her time, it was Hive-Father who unleashed her kins into the Ork Empire of Octarius which began a long war.

“Has Holy Terra been notified?” A battle master said.

“They have, all Deathwatch have been alerted as well as Ordo Xenos and the custodians.”

Red lights washed over the watch fortress. All personnel moved with haste, from the waddling servitors to the lieutenants of the holy Deathwatch. Weapons of all sizes loaded, prayers of every litanies echoed. All in the midst of it, Ninety-Nine stood still, staring at the panopticon with uncertainty and curiosity.

“I’ve never faced an ork or a kin-ork.” Ninety-Nine said.

“No one has faced a genestealer ork.” A battlemaster said.

“It was a theory, now we will see if the scholars are right.” A second astartes said.

Ninety-Nine continued to listen without much of a thought. Things needed to die and The Imperium was in peril. After the long lengthy discussion…

"How long until they arrive?"

"Three months."

Inside the escort vessel, Ninety- Nine saw the bulwark forming. Ships of various sizes formed a horseshoe shape, armed with heavy weapons clumsily welded on with haste. Guns larger than escort ships rose up, metal joints letting out an old howl. Tech priests patrolled through the ships as they spread incense, holy binaries rang far and wide, no halls were left unprotected, be it steel or blessings.

“Guns are primed and steady, the machine spirit is ready to serve.”

For the past few days, Ninety-Nine assisted —mostly heavy lifting— Herodotus, a techmarine from the Sons of Medusa chapter, not that their history or meaning of their chapter was known to Ninety-Nine.

“Carry the A56 to the atrium loading chamber.”

Ninety-Nine nodded. Her arms carried metal parts of strange shapes while her tail held a heavy metal box. The servitors and serfs parted way as Ninety-Nine stomped her way to the atrium loading chamber, a massive interior filled with cogitators and a giant cannon. The red bulb lit up and flashed with a harrowing scream.

“Foreign object detected in vent sector J12. Foreign object detected in vent sector J12.”

Several footsteps, serfs and battle-masters alike, stomped toward the J12. Ninety-Nine followed, arriving just in time to see the foreign object. At J12 vent, a green midget with triangle shaped ears with jagged, skinny fangs, and long forked tongue. Something felt… Strange, it smelled like a kin yet it did not.

“Purge the unclean!”

An astartes raised his bolter, Ninety-Nine…

[CORRECTION IT WAS THE GENESTEALERS THAT INFECTED THEM NOT THE TYRANID ACCORDING TO https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Fidus_Kryptman#Kryptman.27s_Gamble SO PLEASE LOOK IT UP FOR FURTHER UNDERSTANDING]

Launched forward, her elongated arms and claws caught the green creature and pinned it to the wall. The astartes aimed except for the Herodotus, who raised his omnissiah ax to block the barrel. Ninety-Nine closed her eyes, her mind entered green creature’s consciousness, searching for the threads of the great Hive.

Tackled the green glob "Wait! We can study it first can't we?"

Ninety-Nine found the thinnest threads like a fragile web. Or so she thought. The green creature’s connection moved without a pattern, it hopped between the massive threads of splinter fleets and hordes. She grasped it once, but the thread popped away, again and again, a game of fetch played out.

“Grah!”

She hurled the green creature to the floor and pinned it with her foot.

“Stay. Still.” Ninety-Nine growled.

The creature squealed, but underneath Ninety-Nine’s Hive-Mind Takeover she gained control again. The thread, upon its capture, showed a massive ship and inside the inhabitants were… Odd to say. They were orks that retained their consciousness and individualism, but under severe pain, fighting to keep their mind free and in need of a solution.

“Huh…”

Except their solution was to “krump” the pain with bashing whatever they could find. Ninety-Nine saw through this green creature’s eyes, a “grot” by ork’s nomenclature. Deals were made, weapons were crafted, all to enact the biggest Wagh bigger than the Ghazghkull’s war party.

“What did you see, Ninety-Nine?”

“They’re still orks… But in pain.” Ninety-Nine said. “They are infected by the kin’s seed and they think—”

“That does not matter to us, how large are their forces?”

“Large. The bulwark will barely handle them, they gathered an army of mercenary orks and bought weapons, they intend to make the biggest wagh the orks has ever seen…”

“That’s all?” Herodotus said.

“I’ll check again!”

Ninety-Nine delved once more, finding a…

Through the Grot’s eyes and memories… A massive fleet formed. Outcasts, dissidents of Ghazkull, and ambitious orks gathered underneath a previous Wagh by the champion before the infection. Not only that groups split from major ork clans also joined to simply “hav a zoggin good time” also joined. Now that their pain reached an unbearable state, they all became ravenous on the verge of losing their sanity… If they truly had one.

“It’s massive… Fleets of fleets.” Ninety-Nine said. “I’ve never seen a fleet as big as this.”

“That’s because you have not seen enough.” Herodotus said. “We will double the defense and ask aid for nearby chapters. Emperor watch over us…”

Ninety-Nine was left alone, she found herself roaming the halls and helped by carrying heavy materials for the servitors. The next few weeks the bulwark grew into an improvised star fortress with other guardsmen regiments and chapters joining. The next few weeks consisted of rather simple days, she would either assist Herodotus or assist on her own, often ending the day with eating a meal on her own and sleeping in her new room. With much to do, boredom while present, did not gnaw at her patience.

“Bored…” Ninety-Nine said with a sigh.

Ninety-Nine leapt from her bed and headed to the cafeteria. Not the battle master’s since not all of them appreciated her presence and some even outright threatened to kill her should she act suspicious. So instead, she headed to the human side wrapped in her usual robes and light armor that covered her features, enough that the guardsmen only saw a very tall woman.

“Hey Sarge, what do you think all of this?”

“Doesn’t matter what I think of it, just think about your duty and prepare for the orks.”

“I never fought an ork before.”

“I did, but they’re not tough as the tyranids back on Roith… It’s been years now hasn’t it?”

A familiar smell. Ninety-Nine turned her gaze and followed the scent once more. Yes… A scent she knew, but riper, mature. From the look of his grizzled face and stubble, one might not be able to recognize the young man back on Roith. But Ninety-Nine knew.

From a lowly serf to a General, no one in The Imperium was ignorant of the symbol of The Emperor’s holy inquisition. Their powers, infinite, their authority, unquestionable. A guardsman worth his lasgun saw the inquisition once and their authority. They walked with a purpose, demanding absolute attention and fear. They did so to the same figure bearing the mark of the inquisition.

“Tobias?”

The guardsmen’s eyes turned to their Sergeant First Class Tobias’s eyes widened, then split wider once the ol’ SFC was picked up by the said agent and embraced like a lost lover. Sergeant Cena’s body swung left and right, trays and cups flew as the agent’s tail shaped mechadendrites swung wildly.

“I knew that was you!”

Emperor, they must’ve been hallucinating, for they witnessed the agent take a long and deep sniff of Sarn’t Cena, the man probably smelled like lho sticks, recaff, and bitter amasac…

“You smell just the same as I smelled you the first time. Well… You smell older and bitter now but the same!” Ninety-Nine said with a bubbly joy.

“Throne on Terra… Is that you NInety-Nine?”

“Mmhmm!”

“You just disappeared out of nowhere! It’s been seven years since then!”

Ninety-Nine copcked her head. “Really? Eh that’s not a long time is it?”

“I… No, I suppose it's not for you. For now can you set me down?”

Ninety-Nine gently released Tobias.

Though an inquisitor or an agent of the inquisition can be a social person, every guardsman or the average civilians knew they were hunters. Be it innocent victims, heretics, or xeno sympathizers, no inquisitor talked with people just to socialize. One must be conservative with their words in the presence of the inquisition, but not too conservative unless they want to be the target of their interrogation.

"Wow, when did you get that scar on your face?"

“The scar?” Tobias ran his finger down his face. “Ah, right… It was six years ago. The damn orks nearly killed me, but I got him back.” Tobias said. “Funny how the next time I see them it’s with you.”

Ninety-Nine giggled. “It’s going to be fun. But what about the scar on your lips?”

Tobias lit up a lho-stick and cradled it at the corner of his lips. “Ah, by a cultist. That damned cleaver nearly chopped my face off if I didn’t trip at the same time.” He chuckled then sighed tiredly. “I’d sooner fight orks than culists…”

“Then you’re going to have fun in this one!” Ninety-Nine said cheerfully.

“Fun… I suppose it is for you.” Tobias said, lighting up a lho-stick. “It’s going to be a difficult fight, but with adeptus astartes at our side I’m certain we’ll be fine.”

“And we have the kasrkin with us! Not like those scions content with just guarding…” A guardsman said. “They didn’t even lend a hand making the barricade while we—”

“Damn it Rod!” Another guardsman said. “Keep your pipes down, we're in an inquisition vessel! Apologies, madam. Rod let his mouth run first than his mind.”

Ninety-Nine shrugged. “It’s no problem with me. I can help with barricades if you’d like.”

“Or getting more supplies for us.” Tobias said. “Our medics need more supplies if I recall seeing how we were rushed here.”

Ninety-Nine stared at Tobias, the urge to make him smile rose.

"I'll do what is more important for you."

A need rose within the furthest part of her mind, while unknown to herself she simply wanted to see Tobias happy, he chapped lips and scarred face happy. Her tail swung left and right as she imagined the nod of appreciation from Tobias.

“Then we can get some more supplies for the medics.”

The impromptu supply depot for the Cadians operated in the spare supply room.

“We need more bandages and salves. Why can’t we get them?” A Cadian quartermaster said.

“The proper form is not made yet, and I can’t contact the Officio Logisticarum. These medical supplies were meant for the Tulsa frontline, not this bulwark!”

Ninety-Nine couldn’t quiote grasp the issue. Yes, they were for a different place but the current situation mattered more, why does a lack of some form stopped the clerk from giving vital supplies away?

“Excuse me…” Ninety-Nine said politely.

The administratum clerk turned around. The ruddy hue and his red cheeks from his anger paled.

“I uh… Oh, my apologies inquisitor.”

“I’m not an inquisitor, but I am with the inquisition.” She pointed at the medical supplies. “I need those medical supplies.”

Credit to the clerk, he shook his head. “Even if you are inquisition, these medical supplies have been labeled to the Tulsa frontlines. It would be out of form if used here and now, I would be in trouble too!”

“You’ll be in bigger trouble if the orks break through this bulwark you stupid man!” The quartermaster said.

"Typical administratum codswallop..." Tobias muttered.

>"We are here to defend The Imperium, paperwork can come after, and I'm sure they can be explained. I'll make sure you won't get in trouble."

“As I said I'm with the inquisition, and... theytoldmegetthat ...yeah, big orders, from the top.”

The clerk’s eye brow raised and his mouth a shape before retching.

“Very important.” Ninety-Nine said again. “So I’ll be taking that.”

“She… She is an Inquisition agent, right, sarn’t?” The quartermaster whispered.

Ninety-Nine walked around, but her hand was stopped by the clerk, surprising everyone inside.

“E—Even so, a form is required to show the order was made.”

“Hey sarn’t, what happened to the last clerk that said no to an agent of Inquisition?” The quartermaster said.

Tobias grinned. “Oh, turned into a servitor? The second one was turned into corpse starch if I recall.”

“Oh right, and accused as a heretic.” The quartermaster said. “Tortured till he croaked. If I was him I’d just let the agent take it, he might be accused as a heretic for not helping the defense efforts too.”

“I am not I am a faithful servant of the—”

“Then you’ll have no problem giving important supplies away.” Tobias said.

“Mm hmm!” Ninety-Nine said.

“I suppose I can… But you must fill out the form, please! My life depends on it!” The clerk brought out a parchment from his satchel.

“Sure, I can do—”

Then, the room shook.

The lights in her room flickered and blacked out. A foreboding red light flooded her room and throughout the ships. Ninety-Nine’s tail stood straight up, Tobias and the quartermaster’s grin disappeared.

“All personnel to their battlestation. Repeat. All personnel to battlestation.”

Ninety-Nine grabbed the medical crates, after placing the medical supplies where Tobias needed to be, Ninety-Nine headed to her battlestation. Except… She was never told one. Ninety-Nine…

Ninety-Nine went to the first defensive line. Complicated words rang between the operators, astartes talked of battle plans. Guns of various sizes moved up behind cover, from the humble autocannon to heavy bolters, a squad of Death Watch Devastators waited along with Cadia’s kasrkins. Behind it all, a massive wall of raw metal of mixed alloy waited vigilantly. Ninety-Nine arrived in the chaos.

“Ninety-Nine?”

A red pauldron with a black griffon shone underneath the red light. Ninety-Nine no longer thad to look up, but forward at the yellow face plate. She cocked her head, then smiled.

“Battle-master Thedas! What are you doing here?”

“Same reason you are here.” Thedas said. “My kill team is here to stand against the foul greentide.”

“Same!”

Another alarm rang, a short burst of high pitched shriek.

“Ork ramming cruiser incoming!” A console operator said.

The very grounds shook. The astartes and Ninety-Niner stood strong bu the servitors and the guardsmen tumbled off the floor, hitting the walls, emplaced weapons, and sandbags alike. Ninety-Nine caught a guardswoman hurling in her way, scooping her up like a cuter heavy bolter.

“Are you ok?”

The guardswoman nodded with a flustered blush. “I—I am, thank you, my lady…”

“Good. We got a heavy fight against us.”

The ork’s ramming cruiser’s head pierced through the ceramite walls. The hatch opened with a ugly metal creak. The foul voices of the orks exploded, screaming and hollering their unholy warcry. Ninety-Nine roared amongst various Death Watch astartes’ chapter warcry, with her might weapon she charged, armed with…

The two handed sword, blessed by the chaplain, cleaved through the orks. Green flesh seared through las, tore from chainswords, and exploded from the power field of the power weapons. Ninety-Nine dodged an easy swing from an ork’s choppa and countered. The tight corridors descended into a mad house.

“Rragh!”

Red las danced as bolters turned the green tide into chunks. Ninety-Nine shrugged off misplaced las shots as she held the frontline. A flamer nearly gave her a new tan as she dove out of the way. Be it las, flame, or bolter, the green tide poured in. The blade dripped with dark brown ooze, covering the silver blade.

“There’s no end to them!” Ninety-Nine swung.

“This is just the first wave!” Thedas said. “Hold the line!”

The ground shook once more.

“We got more breaches, m'lord!”

In the midst of battle, Ninety-Nine could not find the strands, on top of that, more breaches… The situation devolved faster than she thought. No notable orks have yet to enter the field, yet something still bothered her. Ninety-Nine lifted her head up, then snarled. Through the green tide, Ninety-Nine thrust her sword up, then pulled down. While she was too busy handling the green tide, she knew she hit something

“They’re in the vents!”

Ninety-Nine spun, her sword and tail ripped the surrounding orks. Yet, the tide did not wane.

“Sector Five is being overrun!” A guardsman said.

“Kill team Psi-7 is also requesting for additional support, sir, located in sector five.” An astartes said.

Even if she wanted to help, the balance of power in this battle was just as brittle as Sector Five. The defense of the first line would not last long...

“I’ll go help Sector Five!”

Amidst the green tide of fangs and claws, Ninety-Nine twisted her hips and spun on the ball of her foot, her two handed sword and tail whirled, cutting through the orks. Ninety-Nine thrusted her body forward, and escaped the ravenous grasps of the orks. Ninety-Nine ran, reading the signs of the halls to find herself in sector five. All throughout the halls, the sound of roaring bolters and hissing lasguns echoed.

“For the Emperor!”

“It itches, zoggin ‘ell it itches! Make it stop!”

Ninety-Nine paused, she closed her eyes and pooled the various sounds together. Pain, suffering, threads writhing in pain. Ninety-Nine sprinted to the back end of sector five, catching the orks facing away from her. Ninety-Nine gripped her sword tight, and charged in.

“For the Emperor!” Ninety-Nine bellowed.

Every cut, slash, and kill, a small needle pricked her mind. The ork collective psyche and the tyranid hive mind clashed, screeching like metal dragging on metal. Ninety-Nine gritted as she pushed forward against the green tide, as much as the pain began to mass into agony.

“Hold your fire!”

At the end of the path, Ninety-Nine stood, drenched in green and dark red. There was silence, the green tide subsided, even though she heard the echoing sounds of battle in other sectors this area was clear for now.

"Sector one, can you hear me?" Ninety-Nine spoke into her vox. "Sector one? Tobias?"

She needed to hold the psychic threads of the orks, fast. A task… Easier said than done. Ork by ork, kill by kill, the orks’s already thin thread spasmed. Either she did not have the time to grab them or the connection slipped from her grasp.

“Feth!”

Ninety-Nine threw the ork’s corpse, the corpse’s impact spread green blood all over the wall.

“Why why why can’t I feel the connection?”

She stood alone in the halls as the battle raged on.

“Argh!”

Ninety-Nine’s fist made a dent on the wall. She closed her eyes, searched within the threads upon threads that writhe in pain. The screams echoed. The lasguns and bolters rang throughout the halls. Orders were given. Warcries were chanted. But no clarity ever came. Ninety-Nine stomped her foot every time her concentration broke.

“If I can’t find a thread, I’ll just beat the biggest one there is.” Ninety-Nine snarled.

Ninety-Nine closed her eyes once more, searching for the loudest thread.

“There.”

The hunt was on.

“Rrragh!”

Ninety-Nine charged through the green tide that already breached the defenses. An astartes was on the ground as a large ork raised his choppa high as other orks ran to join. Ninety-Nine spun, her long and armored tail cut the orks in half, but not the larger one. The ork spoke a language unknown to many but not to Ninety-Nine, while she failed to find a stable link, she made enough attempts to understand their language.

“Why you gots-ta ruin ma fun humie!” The ork snarled, one hand holding his saber as the other kept scratching his head. “I’ll zoggin krump ya!”

The astartes beside her stood up, bearing the mark of…

The astartes beside her stood up, bearing the mark of the Charadon Astra.

“WAGHHHHHHHHH!”

Ninety-Nine dodged with a smooth side step, then swung her sword, cutting the ork’s arms with ease and then his leg. The ork laid on the ground, more humiliated than in pain from the wound. Ninety-Nine pushed the ork’s face with her foot as her tail swung to deter other orks.

“I need time to see in his head!”

The astartes silently nodded.

“Tell me something damn you!”

Darkness, an unfathomable abyss. She always saw this when searching for the thread. She knew the great maw where all the threads ended up in, which almost included her. She witnessed it once back when she fought the Tau. She was but a tiny grain in the unending depth of the hive-mind. Despite their struggle for control, she saw the thread already formed… The assimilation was already done, but how? The orks still—

“Oh.”

They were in pain, to get rid of the pain they sought conflict, and conflict meant opportunity to spread their roots. They were already taken care of. But how is it being spread? Why did it take so long to find their thread?

“It’s not infected, Casus.” The Charadon Astra astartes said.

“That thing is clearly being taken control of! It must die before it’s too late, Mawsl!” The Black Templar astartes said.

Ninety-Nine’s body stood with her back slumped forward. Suddenly, her body jerked up.

“They’re already under control!”

Casus and Mawsl both stared at Ninety-Nine.

“They were struggling to keep in control.” Casus said.

“Yes, that’s how they’re doing it. They inflict this itch and somehow guides them. The question is I don’t know how they’re spreading themselves.”

Muffles of bolter fires and lasguns echoed. The guardsmen that survived quickly moved to secure and rebuild their stronghold. Their helmets covered all of their faces with air filters as their spores were deadly to human lungs.

“That can be answered later.” Casus said coldly. “This sector is clear for now, there are others that need reinforcements."

Ninety-Nine knelt to examine the ork. Be it the current defense or the newly encountered orks, there were little to find other than the contextr clues. These orks were from different clans, yet they all had melee weapons or dakkas of varying quality, some of them were crossbows. Ninetyu-Nine wracked her brain, with how much orks there were, were there not enough weapons to go around?

I better get back to fighting the orks, they need my—

Heavy footsteps encroached which would soon reveal themselves. Not a footsteps of heavy ceramite armor or a light footsteps of the guardsmen. No, they were heavy, but lacked the metallic thud in their steps or the steadiness. Ninety-Nine readied her sword. The green tide rushed in once more.

“Emperor guide my hand, please let everyone be safe…”

The footsteps grew louder and louder, the very ground shook. The warcry echoed.

“WAGHHHHHHHHHHHHH”

Ninety-Ninet let out a bellow of her own.

“GRAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”

Blades met flesh. Metal met shells. Ninety-Nine carved her way through the halls and chopped everything until she saw nothing but green and drenched in thick, gloopy green blood. By the time she finished her battle, found herself in a room with three paths. One led to the main cathedral. Another to a labyrinth of hall that had Tobias’s scent. The final path’s air tasted… Sweet.
