You are Senjou Azami, age 18. Presently, a resident at Takamichi Group Home and attending therapy with eight other girls. Those girls are rather unique and special. They are former victims of the Arkadian Kingdom, their Heart Crystal corrupted for nefarious reasons. Each had done terrible things under the influence of corruption, and then became purified and freed by the Pretty Star Warriors. Each of them has their own unique magical powers, just like you.'Police Girl' Shinoda Takeo'Queen Bee' Morita Aoi'Mommy Issues' Shinohara Ren'Normie Teen' Nagato Mari'Romance Nerd' Shibusawa Yuki'Street Kid' Takeoka Rui'Fantasy Lover' Ito Akira'Sport Jock' Ichijou SayakaNow, you're working with them because a simple mission from the godmother has turned into something very complicated. The original mission was moving Kiyotaka Chie and her son Asato away from her abusive husband, Kiyotaka Hisato. It has morphed into something supernatural. The three former yakuza members of the Sumi gang; Kiyotaka Hisato, Maeda Sekine and Kimura Toshimichi, had gone into business selling drugs. Disappointing but unsurprising. They also made some sort of deal with the Arkadian Kingdom to access their magic. Given what happened to the Sumi gang when Lady Hathor of love and madness dominated the crew, such a deal is short sighted and risky. The goals of the Arkadian Kingdom are inimical to the long-term health of normal Japanese, let alone impoverished ex-yakuza.The worst thing about it?Betrayal. They are betraying each other. Brother is murdering brother. You do not know why. You hope it's because the Arkadian Kingdom is poisoning them with corruption and manipulating them. Yet, the betrayal could be a choice made freely. They chose treachery. The magical tools they've gotten from the Arkadian Kingdom has partially corrupted the Heart crystal of Kiyotaka Chie. All because Kiyotaka Hisato was craven and stupid enough to use Arkadian magic on his own wife to avoid arguments about his drug dealing and addiction to meth. What sort of man and husband would do that? What men of honor would cut a deal foreigners and betray their brothers? If the godfather was alive, he'd demand a pinky finger from each of these traitorous kobun underlings before expelling them from the family.Total 50+61+3 = 114. Rounded up. 12,000 yen received.
>>6403866'Street Kid' Takeoka Rui interrupts your thoughts and silently slides some bills into your pocket. She's been camping out in your shadow this entire time, you are barely able to perceive her from the corner of your eye. It's hard not to whip your head around and try to face her, even knowing it's impossible. Her shadow magic allows her to remain hidden but what about offense? The question is important because you are now close enough to the corrupted Chie to hear her music and feel her Disquiet directly. She plays another tune, a soulful and sad classical piece. Her audience's reaction conflicts with the mood, the yakuza hoodlum enthusiastically cheering and clapping without pause looks almost dead with exhaustion. Stream of sweat pour down his face, skin red with exertion and his cheap suit clings to his body wetly. How should you handle this situation? You could just drop the invisibility magic granted by the Fool's Bracer and start talking to Chie. She should still be sane enough to reason with as her Heart Crystal is only a quarter corrupted. If you do though, what will the bewitched man do? You linger behind a toppled over table and ponder."What's the plan?" Your partner in crime asks as she finally decides to step out of your shadow. Now she's fully visible. Her dark eyes are focused on checking out the corner of the bar where the pianist plays."Still deciding. We could just wait a bit longer and let her tire out that guy even more but if he drops dead from exhaustion, it'll be a bigger mess." Your eyes rove around to look for the remains of Yamaguchi Hiro. The punk who kicked this off by kidnapping Chie and apparently got himself killed by her. You can't smell blood nor see any gore, yet one of his lackey described him as a 'smear of flesh'. Suddenly you feel the panicked hand of Takeoka Rui painfully gripping your shoulder as she guides your vision to the ground under the pianist's feet.A smear of flesh? You would describe it as a 'carpet of flesh, hair and clothing'. Stretched out flat as a taut piece of leather is the pulsating and quivering skin of what you think was a human being. Eyes, nose, ears and mouth distorted by the stretching occasionally twitches senselessly. There's a mop of dyed blond hair scattered over the tanned skin like little islands. The purple and white suit are nothing but strips that are swashed in random areas and woven directly into the skin. You stop looking and feel sick. During the brief pauses of the piano music and hectic applause, you could swear you heard deranged moans and insane chatter from the flesh carpet. 'Street Kid' dry heaves besides your side and tries to remain calm.Death would be far more preferable to whatever the corrupted Kiyotaka Chie had done to her kidnapper.
>>6403867"We need to get the Pretty Star Warriors here and purify the crazy woman. I don't want to get too close and end up like that." The former homeless kid runs a hand through her short black hair and tries to calm down after what she had seen. Stream of sweat pour down his face, skin red with exertion and his cheap suit clings to his body wetly.Maybe he's too far gone in this state to do much of anything. On the other hand, Yamaguchi Hiro is a flesh carpet on the fucking floor, and the fact that Chie reduced him to that state but didn't harm the other gangsters as much as him says it all regarding her valid antipathy towards him. I don't think there's a real risk here of these incapacitated gangsters doing anything; the only danger I can imagine besides corrupted Chie herself is the Toyo Group randomly showing up and if they do we're capital F FUCKED.>Chie is sure to recognize youWill she? I don't recall, but does she know about our Senjou Azami already? And do you think us calling the godmother's bar to put Asato on the phone for her mom is a wise move? It will be powerful in affecting Chie, but what if the godmother catches on and she instantly knows Azami broke the fucking rules to this extent?
>>6403869>Ask for a distraction, ask the two teams by the stairwells to attract attention... (Feint run with outside team)>>6403895Chie knows Azami. Godmother would probably catch on instantly, I think the point of no return has been passed of breaking the rules. Phone idea is interesting.
>>6403989Then do you think we have enough to be able to reach out to her? I get the feeling hearing Asato on the phone and talking to him might be the clincher to get her to stand down. The problem is building up to that while keeping her attention without making her turn us into a flesh carpet. I hope returning with Chie safe and sound will make up for breaking the rules. I fear the godmother's potential wrath, but surely it won't come to that. What's your reasoning for voting distraction? Got an angle for tackling this situation?
>>6403869Fuck it, we need to have faith and believe in the power of the heart, or whatever>Stand up and draw attention, start negotiating right away! Chie is sure to recognize you... (Negotiation run, directly talk to target)Use Asato on the phone as the key piece in snapping her out of it and reminding Chie of what really matters.
>>6404048Yes, reaching out can work. Clearing the room of the audience means a performer doesn’t have to perform. One on one. Azami may step in and say it’s time to go home or have the phone play. Just sleeper holding Chie while invisible is an option as well. It is also just bad to have non-magical people in the presence of someone who can turn them into carpets. I’m assuming the unnatural toughness also affords some magic resistance.
You currently have plausible deniability due to your invisibility power. Once you drop it, Chie is sure to recognize you and thank the godmother for sending Azami in.Also, you'll be seen by the victimized gangsters. They'll be sure to mention your presence to other Toyo Group members. You still aren't sure if Yamaguchi has backing from his higher ups regarding Chie or not.Right now the two gangsters outside with the girls don't know you're here.

If we go combat run first, we lose time we could have spent rescuing Chie and the longer she plays her piano the worse it'll get here. But if we don't KO all 3 gangsters then they'll be a danger to us and Chie on the way out.>you could swear you heard deranged moans and insane chatter from the flesh carpet.Scumbag Yamaguchi is still conscious>the ground under the pianist's feetAnd he's right there at Chie's feet and his eyes/ears still work. We cannot recover Chie without him noticing and knowingWe might still be fucked. Toyo Group is not going to be happy we're spiriting away one of their ladies... but ultimately she can always come back once things get safer for her and Asato, no? And she'll be alive... which is better than the state Yamaguchi and these gangsters are in. What I'm wondering is what will Toyo Group take offense to the most. Is it us taking Chie away, or Yamaguchi fucking up and causing all this shit to happen?I think the play here with Toyo Group is we still rescue Chie, and then because Chie's corruption is specifically due to Hisato's use of AK magic and the drug sellers clusterfucking each other in addition to Yamaguchi going after her as a result, we throw both Yamaguchi and Hisato under the bus and pin all the blame on AK. Could Toyo Group instead decide to cut off the middlemen directly and try to work with AK theselves? Maybe. Could they turn on Chie for reducing Yamaguchi to a flesh carpet whether she's one of their best ladies or not? Or will they instead shit on Yamaguchi for bringing this all on himself and shaming the Toyo Group, and acknowledge we were protecting their asset and let this ordeal slide? If we go the distance and have Chie purified, that works in our favor mollifying Toyo Group to boot>You're ninety percent sure that the punk who grabbed Chie is doing it without permission and knowledge from the Toyo Group. Of course, you have a ten percent possibility of being wrong. Oh well, that's the criminal life for you. You can't play safe and hope for a guaranteed hundred percent outcome all the time. After all this thinking, I've decided to stand by my vote in >>6404049. This feels like overthinking at this point. The music plays on and on and on. Even through the supernatural Silence imposed by Shinohara, you can still hear it. You look from your hiding place to observe the smiling Chie play out another tune on the piano before shifting your gaze to the exhausted underling continuing to cheer and clap. Then you look at the chat of your livestream. The endless commentary from the worried girls outside, arguing on what to do. You guess that HQ must be 'Police Girl' and Truthspeaker must be 'Queen Bee'. They have their hands full trying to corral the others and suggest a plan of action. You choose a handle name and enter the chat. It is the season of the sakura in Japan; you try to take 'Sakura' but get denied. Someone else already took it, and that discovery upsets you. You try to think up a different one. You remember in the south, on the island of Taiwan, the chinaberry trees are flowering. A bitter and sorrowful sounding name. Khoolinga: I want to take out the audience before taking any other actions. Tilt the odds in our favor more inside the bar first. The girls move like a well-practiced team. 'Queen Bee' Morita wasn't lying when she declared that they've been doing this for a while. Each knows of the others' abilities and duties clearly. Below, 'Mommy Issues' moves into position and concentrate her magic Silence upwards to envelope the piano-playing Chie. The music by the corrupted woman appears to be a key element to the dangerous powers bestowed upon her. Best to disrupt it just in case; Yamaguchi is a flesh carpet at her feet, and you aren't keen to find out if the pianist can do that with her music. 'Sport Jock' along with 'Normie Teen' and 'Fantasy Lover' position to support should something go wrong. The rest are on guard and monitoring the surrounding area. You're somewhat surprised that 'Police Girl' Shinoda isn't at the vanguard or accompanying 'Mommy Issues' but guarding 'Queen Bee' and 'Romance Nerd'. Then again, the other girls keep mentioning their leader has a tendency of going berserk. The riskiest part is 'Street Kid' and your portion of the job. When Silence blocks the music, that will be your signal to take down the charmed underling. His state of exhaustion and obliviousness makes him easy prey. The pianist is paying attention to nothing but her music, she won't notice a thing. Toyoko: We'll observe the target first after Silence surrounds the pianoKhoolinga: It'd be nice if the punk just drops unconsciousHQ: No sign of PSWWarrior: I see the two crying guys in the hallwaySaltfish: Ready over here.Reality: I've got a bad feeling about thisGames: You'll be fine, girl.Truthspeaker: remember the ziptiesUniversity: I'm in position. Starting now. The music stops completely, and the cheering and applause peters out. Luck of the Luckless activates. Double Fortune! You are blessed. Something has changed. It's hard to describe. It's the sensation that everything that could go right, will go right. The victim of the corrupted Chie stands in a daze as though not quite believing he's been freed. He looks down at his reddened hands, swollen from the non-stop applause. Then he breaks into a run towards the exit, but in his exhaustion, he trips and falls. He sobs with fear as he desperately crawls towards the door. Toyoko: he's heading out! Good news for you and 'Street Kid', but bad news for the girls outside and the fleeing man. This is a double fortune? There are two weeping possessed gangsters out in the hallway. You have no time to react for Chie paused her playing and looks up from the piano. Silence imposed upon her was too strong. She seems baffled and spares a glance to the fleeing man. The surprised pianist rises from her seat but makes no other move. Her eye follows the unfortunate man, as though contemplating what to do to stop him. This is not what you expected. You can't allow Chie to leave the bar and run into the girls outside.
>>6407117You quickly text Asato. His cellphone is always on him, so he responds immediately. Khoolinga: drop silence in bar move it to hallway! Your cellphone rings as you place it on a chair and back away. Sound travels naturally within the ruined bar now. The ringing startles the corrupted pianist who immediately rushes over with unnatural speed. Chie desperately looks around to see who left the phone, but your invisibility and Takeoka's shadow ability keeps her sight away. Chie answers the call. The look on her face transforms to surprise and delight as she hears the voice of her son. She has forgotten all about her escaping victim. The girls outside will take care of him and whatever troubles happen. After the door closes, you hear nothing outside the bar.The minutes pass slowly while the mother reassures her son. It would be easy to forget how much of a danger the woman really is except for the nonsensical whispers and sobs of the flattened flesh on the floor that used to be Yamaguchi."It hurts--- it hurts--- oh god---- make it stop---- please---- it hurts---- stop----" A cracking voice of absolute misery and pain makes a stark contrast to the happy light voice of a mother soothing her son. It attracts the attention of Chie who coolly observes the twitching flesh carpet while biding goodbye to her son. "Hm, it hurts?" Chie asks the quivering flesh with a smile."It hurts--- please stop---- it hurts--- mother---- oh god---- it hurts." Yamaguchi desperately whimpers."Good." The coldness of the response could freeze hell itself. Chie puts the cellphone in her pocket and walks out of the bar. 'Street Kid' approaches your side and begins speaking after Chie leaves."Got word from the others. They hid before Mrs. Kiyotaka got out of the bar. They'll clean up here, but you better go after her. As far as we know, the Pretty Star Warriors are only keeping an eye on you. Don't worry, I'll go with you." With that, Takeoka once more merges with your shadow. You go after the woman. She must be intercepted before arriving at 'Last Chance' and get purified by the Pretty Star Warriors somehow. You leave the building without seeing the other girls or the victimized gangsters.Fool's Bracer - Invisibility magic ends. 1 charge leftAh, so there's a time limit to the invisibility magic. Luckily, you don't have any need for it right now. The streets of Tokyo are alive with pedestrians who are oblivious to the danger walking amongst them. Chie looks like any other woman who had a rough day, people give her wide berth.Deception - You should steal your cellphone back.Fierce Loyalty - A cellphone is the least of your worries. You disobeyed orders.Unnatural Toughness - Ya know, I think my job will be done soon. When I finish healing up this poison, eat something. I'm thinking a nice bowl of lo bah on penglai rice.
>>6407118Getting back your cellphone and eating is low on the list of priorities! How the hell are you going to attract the attention of the Pretty Star Warriors so they can do their job? One thing for sure is that she can't head to where her son is at until she's purified. You run up and start calling out to the corrupted woman."Chie-chan, wait up!" Your voice carries over the head of passerby and reaches her ear. She stops and turns to face you with a blank face. >Try to convince her to go to her childhood friend, Ishida Kyou, and remain at his cafe...>Explain she's sick and take her somewhere to rest and get cured... >Advise that her husband is out of police custody and she needs stay elsewhere for a little while...>Tell her about the infighting between the former brothers, she might be in danger and needs to hide...>Ask her to accompany you and delay seeing her son, she's a danger to people right now...>Surely the Pretty Star Warriors are close by, prepare Chie for purification by explaining what is wrong with her...
>>6407119>Ask her to accompany you and delay seeing her son, she's a danger to people right now...Lie about needing advice for a gift for Asato
>>6407119>Surely the Pretty Star Warriors are close by, prepare Chie for purification by explaining what is wrong with her...I don't think disquiet makes you totally unconscious of your actions at this level of corruption, if at all. Telling her that she's in danger when she has just acquired magical powers and the confidence that comes with that is likely to be met with something like "good, let them come", and delaying her seeing her son by telling her to lay low isn't likely to go down well either. Maybe the only danger she would be afraid of would be magic, like her husband and co, but that might be overmatched by confidence and desire for confrontation, or alternatively an overwhelming conventional threat like the military or something insane like that. Hence, I think showing that we are knowledgeable about what is going on, and telling her that she needs help is probably for the best, despite our knack for deception. It is that or hoping she is still afraid of her husband, or that she'll feel afraid enough again if we reveal he has magic too, enough to come with us instead.>>6407132I don't think something this trivial will work. She just talked to him, and is likely on her way to him right now, assuming he told her where he is. The needing advice for a gift I mean, telling her she is dangerous might work. The two don't really mesh together well though. Unless I misunderstood what is going on?

I maybe slower than usual. So if I'm not answering as often, it just means that updates will be very random.
>>6407201I don't like having Chie near any men after Yamaguchi. Not while she's corrupted. Imagine if her childhood friend Ishida gets misunderstood by her in her corrupted state and then she turns him into a carpet too. No, we need her mind primed and clear. No freakouts, understand?
>>6407119>Surely the Pretty Star Warriors are close by, prepare Chie for purification by explaining what is wrong with her...
Pretty Star Warriors option taken.
>>6407467Fair enough.
The blank look on her face does not augur well. It is a look that some of the ladies at the Sumi hostess clubs have upon being utterly done on a particular night. The fakery put on for demanding customers, bitchy coworkers, grasping managers, and more add up to a heavy bill of exhaustion and dissatisfaction. Kiyotaka Chie is at that magnificent moment of not giving a fuck anymore and just wanting to go home. Enhance that with the Disquiet spilling out. Normal people instinctively give her a wide berth without understanding the danger or reason. A faint taste of sweetness sticks to the back of your teeth. A bad sign. The pressure of Disquiet presses softly on your skin, but it feels like it's grown a bit. An even worse sign. The corruption of her Heart Crystal is growing at an unusually fast pace. If she manifested her power recently, then the corruption shouldn't be advancing so quickly. Something has changed with Arkadia. That stagnant, dying monarchy is evolving and changing their tactics and strategy. Lady Hathor of love and madness must be overjoyed, you almost feel happy for her. Even if her efforts are all vain and the doom eating away at that blighted kingdom shall cast it all into darkness. The Pretty Star Warriors must be close by. You can make their jobs easier by talking to the corrupted woman about what is coming next and getting her to somewhere safe and isolated to let them get to work. Damn it, it's like you're working for those magical girl bitches. "I've been looking all over for you. Lady Sumi and Asato will be glad to see you safe, but not yet. You must realize there's something wrong with you. I heard reports from a crew I hired for help that you've walked out after doing something interesting to Yamaguchi. I need you to come with me and get cured." You try to stay vague about the details and add a thin gloss of lies to hide your direct involvement. The godmother would be furious if she learned the truth. "Hired? Does that mean you'll hand over your cut of the profits to pay us?" Takeoka snarks from the safety of your shadow, but you ignore her. There's a look of recognition coming over the corrupted woman's eyes, she is not lost to her insanity and recognizes you. You walk a few steps closer to her. "I'll get the professionals to come and help you. Don't worry, it won't hurt. It'll be like falling asleep under the light of a moon. When it's done, you can forget about the nastiness and ride back to Tomakomai. Come with me." "Of course, Chevalier, I hear and obey." Chie smiles widely as you come to a stunned halt. Arkadian Favor - I grant thee, Chevalier, this token of my esteem. Ye shall rule thy lessers. What? You feel a hand gripping your shoulder while the other hand is busy with a sharp knife gently pricking your back. In the corner of your eye, the passenger riding your shadow readies to strike with her dosu blade.
>>6409112"Just what the fuck is going on? Are you actually an Arkadian freak? I knew we couldn't trust you!" Takeoka hisses with fear. Her eyes are simply black with magic, there are no whites. "Don't know, this is new to me. You can stab me after we get the purification done, not before." You try to sound tough and confident, but inwardly there's a weight in your Heart. There's also a reaction from Chie, who stares past your shoulder as though she can see Takeoka. The air crackles with energy, a storm ready to burst into action. "Don't do anything that disturbs the public order, Chie-chan. The punk behind me isn't worth your effort. A mere dosu stabbing me a hundred times isn't going to kill me. They nicknamed me the 'immortal' for a reason." "Who the fuck are you calling a punk? If I'm a punk, then you're a broke-ass chinpira punk. Immortal, my ass. Don't try nothing, I have the advantage here." "You're welcome to have a go at my 'tama' life after this. Just not right now." You scowl and turn your head to face the girl, but her shadow magic makes that impossible. She's always at the corner of your eye instead. The tingling keys of music softly play; you glare at Chie whose fingers lightly flutter in the empty air as though she's performing on a piano. The pedestrians walking by look confused at the sudden intrusion of piano music and disturbed by the sight of a strange woman moving her fingers in the air as though at a keyboard. "I said don't do anything that disturbs the public order. You married into a family that follows the code, it's got rules and regulations when katagi civvies are around." "Of course, Chevalier."The corrupted woman stops her magical performance and smiles complacently. The Pretty Star Warriors didn't show up after that display. Does that mean they don't monitor you all the time?"Well Arkadian, what's the plan? Tell me so I can tell the others. No funny stuff." The knife digs a bit into your back but doesn't break skin to plunge into flesh.Yet."If those warriors aren't nearby, then we'll have to grab their attention. I have a place in mind. Normie Teen and Queen Bee know where it is.""I can guess who Normie is but who the hell is Queen Bee? Use the codenames in the chat.""The codenames suck. Mine are better.""Better? What's mine?" "Street Kid.""Yeah, no. You suck at codenames."It takes a great deal of back and forth on the chat to convince Takeoka to put away her knife and exit your shadow. The former homeless girl glares daggers as you shepherd the obedient Chie onwards. It's a silent train ride in an empty car because of the uncanny aura of Disquiet growing in the corrupted woman.

The former homeless girl glares daggers as you shepherd the obedient Chie onwards. It's a silent train ride in an empty car because of the uncanny aura of Disquiet growing in the corrupted woman. If the Pretty Star Warriors won't come to you, then you'll head to a place you know they hang out at. The stakeout house near Takamichi Group Home with magical illusions hiding it's presence and entrance. If you walk along the concrete wall encompassing the house, the magical illusion suggests that there's no entrance to let anyone in. Most oblivious people wouldn't notice that oddity and for the rare few who do notice, there's a secondary magical effect to dismiss that observation. If you hadn't stumbled upon Morita and Nagato searching for the place, you would never have realized that the Pretty Star Warriors are stalking you. The window on the second floor is perfectly level with the second floor dorm at Takamichi Group Home. The thistle flower marking the disguised entrance hangs were you last left it. You lay a hand there and feel only open air, the entrance hasn't closed or moved. The overgrown garden remains verdant and wild while the house remains unnaturally clean and pristine. "Hand over the cellphone Chie, I gotta make a call.""Of course, Chevalier.""New orders, stop calling me Chevalier.""Of course, Lady Senjou.""... New orders, call me Godmother.""... Wouldn't that upset godmother Sumi?"Takeoka barks out a laugh as she explores the empty kitchen while you sigh in frustration. Unnatural Toughness - HAHAHAHA! VICTORY OVER POISON! Sickness shall not touch me, venom shall not enfeeble me, pain is but an illusion. You no longer suffer a -2 penalty from being poisonedAt last, the poison is cleansed.Anons, choose a memory!...>The sad grandeur of the Arkadian Kingdom, you saw it from the shoreline with her...>The Great Hunt held by the Nobility, you worked with her...>Wandering through the streets of the Arkadian Kingdom, you talked with her...>The time you got severely injured fighting against the Pretty Star Warriors, she had to heal you...>Trying to find a book in the Grand Library, you can't read Arkadian but she insisted you come with her....

Slight delay, I have finally received the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire from a friend. I purchased it almost a year and half ago roughly for the purposes of research while writing Mahou Shoujo Villainess.I'm baffled why now, I've practically forgot that I purchased it from him.He lent me volume 1 to 3 of Lords of Mysteries as an apology but also requested I read these lent books as soon as possible and return it to him.

It feels odd to be in a room with someone corrupted once more. The unsettling sensation of Disquiet excites a familiar premonition of supernatural danger. You look upon Chie placidly sitting on the floor and humming a tune. She returns your gaze steadily, her face full of expectation for your next orders. The discomfort of only one corrupt can scarcely compare to a room full of corrupted gangsters. Memories return unbidden; you remember the vibrant color of fireworks dying away to mark the end of September and the beginning of October. It also marked the formal end of the festival scheme you came up with. It succeeded far beyond the meager expectations held by you. At most, it would be an interesting experiment of subtle extraction of mana from civilians enjoying the simple joys of a Japanese matsuri. The plan not only filled the coffers of the Arkadian Kingdom to the brim but also became lucrative for the Sumi gang. You paired the subtle energy draining with a subtle magical suggestion to encourage spending. Nothing too crazy. Just that people should spend about ten times more than usual at the gang-affiliated stalls and not find it unusual. The sheer number of people willingly dropping wads of cash to eat poorly made festival food, buy shoddy cheap trinkets, or play rigged festival games at elevated prices took you off guard. It really shouldn't have, Lady Hathor had full confidence in the plan and high expectations. The magical assistance from the Arkadian Kingdom in all the business ventures of the Sumi gang rendered them all wildly profitable. Be it prostitution or gambling or collecting protection money. For the first time in years since the promulgation of anti-yakuza laws, there was money and no interference from the law. Rival yakuza bosses could only look on with envy and greed while the cops were enraged and baffled by the sudden prosperity and inability to disrupt business. The slow decay towards destruction of a small declining yakuza gang inexplicably halted. A mystery to all. Except to the Pretty Star Warriors. It took those magical girls awhile, but they eventually did figure out the scheme and disrupt it. A stroke of bad luck, or they have a civilian identity and were victimized. You distinctly remember Pretty Star Warrior Helios raging about how much money she lost eating crappy yakisoba. Thinking about it now, you wonder if this was the true start of the downfall of your 'family'. The Pretty Star Warriors finally realized the repeated involvement of the Sumi gang in Arkadian Kingdom plots was not a coincidence. The usual modus operandi of the Arkadians is to simply find some unfortunate victim and corrupt their Heart Crystal until they go insane, harvesting a vast amount of mana from them and extra from others affected by the corrupted.
>>6411590A sustained operation using a select number of enthralled, slightly corrupted humans to infiltrate and control aspects of civil society was simply not how the Arkadian Kingdom operated back then. They recognized Lady Hathor as a revolutionary new enemy. They also recognized you as a relatively important subordinate. At the time, you were unaware and careless of the consequences of this recognition. You were simply too obsessed with protecting your mistress and acting as a sort of sounding board to her ideas. The patriarch of the Sumi gang inadvertently inspired her ambitions for a grand and difficult vision. He only wanted to impress upon her the idea that if the gang got big enough and touched the money of everyone, it would be safe. This almost casual advice from Godfather Sumi Masatoshi became the fatal seed. If her Arkadia touched every aspect of this island known as Japan, if it controlled the flow of money and power and blood in the shadows... She could prolong the survival of her homeland. Then expand from there to encircle the world. Ah, but you're getting ahead of yourself. Such a mad megalomaniacal plan was only just starting to coalesce in that chill October. It would only fully flower after the incident when you nearly died. The hardships of the past for the Sumi gang seemed like nothing more than a bad dream. Everyone wanted to party in style, and so they did. The godfather sent invitations to fellow allied yakuza gangs in the Greater Tokyo association and certain civilian 'friends' to partake in a celebration. It was borderline disastrous. To enclose normal humans in a place charged with Disquiet spilling out of so many Sumi gangsters in one place left a wholly negative impression. Even hardened gangsters from the Toyo Group, Isshin Association, and Kirito Cooperative found it hard to endure, but pride won't let them admit it. Civilian staffers, political pukes, and business people, though, are trying to depart without offense. Luckily, this was something the Arkadian witch was counting on. Watching the dark lady of love and madness move amongst these unsuspecting civilians with smiles of comfort, subtly probing their minds and importance as they depart with threadbare excuses. "Well, that's the last of them. They ended up leaving far more quickly than I expected. I'm so glad you were around to distract them. I overestimated how long humans can endure being so close to the chosen of Arkadia. This is what happens when I spend too much time only around those I command. Darling Azami, I will need to learn more about those sixteen mortals I just marked at a later time." Lady Hathor claps her hands and smiles as she watches the last katagi civilian leave the hotel. She gazes upon the news reporters and police officers milling outside; it's quite the crowd.
>>6411591"Distract? I practically had to threaten them or deceive by picking their pockets and pretending they dropped their cellphone. My lady, some of the people you marked for potential domination aren't very important. Heck, one of them is just a secretary for some minor politician. Don't know why you pegged him as useful." You don't bother mentioning the other 'distraction' in play. The Arkadian witch had fun dressing you up in a fine black dress, and the men responded by paying unnerving attention to you. You're sixteen years old, those damn perverts! The death-dealing glare you give towards the Arkadian rolls off like water. "You need to remember even the smallest pawn can become a queen under the right circumstances. I dare say that you were much the same as that secretary. An unimportant pawn who turned out to be quite a useful knight." "You used to call me an absolute menace and nuisance to your plans. What changed?" "Sweetheart, nothing has changed. You still are a threat to me. No matter how hard I try to gift you with the blessing of the Kingdom, your steadfast Heart rejects it." Fierce Loyalty - Of course I reject it! That blessing is a curse that drives people nuts or kills them or worse. You can't say it out loud. Instead, you take her by the hand and lead her upstairs. The gang bosses are all gathered at the top floor and conversing with each other. But as usual, she's a social butterfly and wants to check in on the younger brothers first. They're mingling with other lower-rank yakuza from allied gangs, and Lady Hathor wants to know how they are getting on. They're stripping off their shirts and jackets to show off their irezumi tattoos. You laugh at the stunned look on Lady Hathor's face as tattooed men start comparing their ink jobs, talking about the type of tattoos they might get next, or showing them off to each other. Even going so far as to pose before the Arkadian and ask for her opinion on the beauty of the designs decorating their body. Flummoxed, the young girl says a few random compliments and even listens with patience to the men extolling the tattoos before making her exit. She openly stares at you, and it is rather discomfiting until she at last speaks. "I find it curious. Everyone in the Sumi gang has these 'irezumi' but you. Don't you also want one? I can grant you time for one.""I am thankful for your generosity but I must decline, my Lady. I want one but I can't get one.""Can't? If I come with you and negotiate on your behalf, I will convince the tattooist of your choice to work for you. What about that master Koizumi everyone mentions?"
>>6411592"I'll just drive old master Koizumi to tears of rage and despair again. The master called my skin the most beautiful canvass a tattoo artist could ask for. White as cowrie shells, unblemished skin and firm muscles is what he said. But I heal too quickly."Unnatural Toughness - The first stab of the needles, the unnatural sound of tearing skin and the sharp prick of pain is nothing. I work against all wounds!"Ah, that's right. Your gift. Well, if you could get one. What would you ink on your skin?"What sort of tattoo? >>6414143No worries, QM. See you soon!
"A swallowtail ageha butterfly." "A butterfly?" Lady Hathor repeats the name while futilely trying to imagine what a humble butterfly looks like. She soon admitted defeat by reaching for her cellphone and slowly tapped in 'ageha' with one finger to search the internet for pictures. The resulting images bring a genuine look of joy as she admires the delicate insect with their colorful wings and sheer variety of them. Living things are always a source of wonder and joy to her; there's nothing like it in Arkadia. The dates---- The excursions to see animals and plants have always pleased her. A trip to the aquarium to see colorful fishes, a walk around the Imperial Palace gardens, or a cafe to drink coffee and play with dogs never failed to transform this self-contained and mysterious girl into a happy and excited teenager. You forget the domination she holds during those moments. "There's more to it, right?" The Arkadian waits for more details while you swipe the security card and press the elevator button. "Hmph, of course there's more to it. It's a Hell Butterfly. It means if my soul is bound for Hell from everything I do with the gang, then at least I want to be beautiful and flutter amongst the hellfire." "Hark, then dance within the hellfire of your Heart and soul to reach new heights." You turn to look at the Arkadian. Her smile only baffles, and she is in her strange moods again. "My Lady, why can't you stop being mysterious? If this is about getting stronger, I'm sure I'd figure out how to power up if you explained stuff." "Can I explain why a Tilar still sings to the sunless skies? Or how the sweet waters of Aether can soothe the sting of despair? Or what sort of girl can resist the blessings of my homeland? Oh sweetheart, I am neither of your ilk nor familiar with your gift. The most I can do is beseech you to reach within your Heart to shine ever brighter. I pray that it will be soon. You are falling behind the odious rebels from the Court of Stars." The elevator door opens, cutting off your retort, as it unexpectedly reveals a crew of five 'working girls'. Their makeup was immaculate, and dresses clung to the curves of their young bodies in a way to entice more than a lingering look. They're beautiful, and you catch yourself staring before realizing something. They're incredibly young. While it isn't unusual for the Sumi gang to have young 'working girls', you've never seen these particular girls before. "Going up?" A girl with dyed blonde hair asks with cheer while the other four girls are frozen with surprise and say nothing, as though trying to minimize their presence in the hopes you will ignore them. That is an impossibility given the circumstances. The blonde has rendered you speechless for a few more seconds before noticing Lady Hathor's frown. You shift attention to the other reason you can't ignore them. This secured elevator requires an access card since the gang bosses are on the top floor.
>>6414985There's no way these girls should be in there. You step forward to place yourself between them and Lady Hathor. "Please exit the elevator. Who is your 'manager'? I need to call them to confirm your identity," you demand firmly. "Oh don't be like that. Big boss Sumi asked for us---" The blonde-haired girl doesn't get to finish her lie. "Brothers to me! Intruders!" You shout. The instant she mentioned the godfather, it was over. A cautious man like the boss would never taint 'business' with outsiders. You immediately call out to the brothers lingering close by. The men start getting up from their seats in the banquet hall. Even the guests from the other gangs also rise to see what the trouble is. "I knew this wouldn't work. Take this, Arkadian!" a dark-eyed girl wearing a silky dress in the elevator snarled and stepped forward boldly. In her hands is an inert crystal, and she points it directly at you. It does nothing. You'll never forget the look of absolute bafflement on her face before driving your fist into it. The girl you punched was Pretty Star Warrior Sword in magical disguise, so she tanked the attack like it was nothing. The rest are Helios, Seer, Polaris, and Cygnus, but the ensuing chaos that erupted didn't allow time to figure out who was who. The punch-up with Sword and protecting Lady Hathor took up all your attention. Sword strikes back with a blow straight to your face in revenge. You feel a cheekbone crack a little and stagger back a step, but the pain is immediately neutered and that fantastical regeneration ability of yours kicks into action.Unnatural Toughness - Heh, you call that a punch!?The swarm of Sumi gangsters rushing towards the scene of the fight with their unnatural powers on display scares away the hard-bitten guests from other yakuza gangs. Their nerves were already on edge from being so close to corrupted humans, but this unnatural display of strength and power shatters whatever resolve they have to remain. The air roils with Disquiet, and the madness bubbling away underneath the thin mask of sanity for the corrupted falls away. The disguised Pretty Star Warriors are not idle. They rush to exit the elevator and go on the attack with the light of purification beaming across the room. The strange streaks of magic, the bolts of starlight and other nameless energy crisscross across the space in a firefight worthy of a war. Seer with her geomancy magic has changed the very dimensions and proportion of the walls and floor to stymie and redirect the horde with obstacles. A sharp knife thrown by one of the Sumi gangsters sticks into an obstacle that gushed up from the ground as a pillar while others are forced to maneuver around a wall to only get hit by Star Light from Polaris and collapse unconscious. Helios and Cygnus work in tandem, back to back while physically disabling corrupted humans with snares and shocking paralysis attacks.
>>6414986It is a wonder to see, they're like a well oiled machine. Not that you could see them at the time. Pretty Star Warrior Sword was in your face and gunning to take you down and then move on to Lady Hathor as usual. You used to be quite the challenge for Sword to take down but she's gotten much stronger and faster the last few encounters. You once were a shield against all seeking to harm your lady, but lately you've been nothing more than a temporary annoyance to be swatted away. The inert crystal in Sword's hand get past your defenses, but the numerous cuts are superficial and simply heals. It clearly was a magical device that wasn't working, at the time you didn't care because it was better than facing the usual magical sword of light that could not cut flesh, but cuts magic with each blow and hurt like hell."Hallowed Arkadia I call upon thee, aid my beloved knight." Empower - Faster, stronger, greater than mortal. Rise to meet the challenge! With Lady Hathor's magic boosting your physical abilities, you are now able to barely keep up with the movement of your enemy and attack. The numerous cuts and slashes from Sword no longer find a mark on your body as often as you parry and deflect. It's not enough to defeat Sword though. It hasn't been enough for awhile now."Why isn't this working?!" Sword shouts as she manages to stab you again with the crystal again. This entire mode of attack was baffling from start to finish. By now, she should have pulled out her usual weapon and started fighting at full strength."What the hell are you talking about?!" You shout back in anger and shove her back. The knowledge that she is more than capable of defeating you easily and quickly but chooses not to is infuriating. Your lady is right about the need to power up, you feel utterly insulted and pathetic at your current level of strength. The chaos of the situation escalates when there are shouts at the ground floor of the hotel. The police demanded entrance and force themselves through the doors against a stream of fleeing hotel employees and uncorrupted gangsters. Sensing that time is growing short, Sword does something unexpected. She turns her attention to the retreating Arkadian noble and ignores you. She ignores you. Threatening Aura - You aren't a threat to her. You can't intimidate any of the Pretty Star Warriors any more...
I'll post the rest at a latter time. I never thought I could not relax to write during the long weekend because of my father.
>>6414987lol Sword is genderbent Yoo Joong-Hyuk from Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint?
>>6415137I have barely an idea who that is. I just grabbed a pic of some sort of manhwa and pasted it there as a guesstimate of her looks.
>>6415143ORV is a web novel, with a popular web comic adaptation. You've mentioned reading Lord of the Mysteries, ORV is frequently considered one of the three "actually good" East Asian web novels alongside LOTM and Shadow Slave, though your mileage may vary and some people may prefer other ones. Yoo Joong-Hyuk is one of the three main characters of ORV. That pic is of him when he genderbends to use some sort of martial art ability, iirc.Personally, while I liked all three, particularly LOTM, I don't think any of them are particularly well written. Though I did like their ideas.
>>6415143>>6415153Well, I say East Asian, but probably better to limit that to Chinese and Korean web novels.
>>6415153>particularly LOTMDitto, that one has such a unique setting and magic.
>>6414987Oof. Maybe her attacks aren't harming us, but our ego is in shambles.
>>6414987Time seemed to slow down as Sword made her leap over you and towards Lady Hathor, forcing the Arkadian noble into direct confrontation. Left with no choice, the harried girl throws up a barrier for defense. The strange crystal held in Sword's hand glows and crackles alive with deadly energy this time. Sparks fly off as the crystal weapon strikes the magical shield with repeated blows. You give chase as an unwelcome sensation comes over your Heart. You aren't going to make it in time. You're useless. A nameless pain stabs your self-worth in a way you haven't felt in years. If you're useless, you're nothing. If you're nothing, you'll be left with nothing. Your mother went back to Taiwan without you because you were worthless, and your father left and never came back because you were worthless. The sensation also comes with a realization. If Lady Hathor of love and madness dies, so does the Sumi gang. Cutting off your entire pinky finger to make amends will be worthless. The magic of Arkadian is preventing the inevitable downfall of the family even as it puts it in danger at the same time. The gang has gotten rich and powerful through the deal you made with her those many months ago. The magical shield shatters under a heavy blow from Sword but Lady Hathor of love and madness remains calm and defiant in the face of inevitable death. She coolly reaches for her family dagger, knowing her hand will never reach it in time as Sword strikes once more with her strange glowing crystal weapon. "This is the end!" Sword shouts as the gleaming arc of the weapon stabs downward and sinks deep into your chest. Sacrifice - Willingly you'll take the place of another and face Hell itself. Swap places with the one you promised to protect and take a blow meant for them. Something magical happened. One moment, you were too far away. Now you are literally face-to-face with a shocked Pretty Star Warrior Sword who cannot comprehend how her Arkadian enemy has disappeared. "AZAMI!" You hear your Lady screaming out your name. She's standing where you used to be with a storm of black butterflies fluttering around her. A few silly thoughts occur to you in that moment. Things like 'what a neat new supernatural skill'. And 'wait, this ability sucks'. And 'a cool power to shoot lightning or something would be so much nicer.' Unnatural Toughness - Oh shit, this is going to suck. But I think we'll live? Maybe? The strange magical crystal explodes in your chest and drives shards deep into it. The weapon didn't stop reacting despite the escape of the original target. The anti-Arkadian weapon is enough to kill their target. If they were Arkadian. Fortunately, you are human. Unfortunately, the mystical energies ravaging the inside of your body futilely seeks to destroy something it cannot find. And it will continue to seek it out. Until you die. Unnatural Toughness - Not dead yet!
>>6415583The shocked Sword doesn't move after striking and stares in horror as the destructive energies cook skin and muscle while your supernatural regeneration races to repair the damage. Despite the blinding pain, you reach forward and seize Sword by the head. Then you start squeezing your thumbs into her eyes, the soft jelly of eyeballs crushed as Sword starts screaming and trying to tear your wrists away to stop your attack. The Pretty Star Warriors would later tell you they made two assumptions. They assumed you were not a human being but rather an Arkadian. One because of your supernatural healing ability. Two, because you are a girl running around with the yakuza. It's a good assumption. Women tend to be girlfriends, wives, mistresses, or 'working girls' but almost never low-level associates. In all your time working with the gang, you have never heard of a woman who succeeded in exchanging cups and oaths in the last decade. If the situation weren't so absurd, you would have laughed back then at the realization sexism played a major part in fooling these magical girls. To continue down memory lane, you don't remember much of what happened after. Whatever memories you do have are snatches of nightmares and pain. Someone broke your wrists to free Sword from your grasp. You fell to the ground, twitching and screaming in pain, unable to do anything. Darkness and the sound of beating oars on water. Ghostly servants carrying you to some unknown place. Moments where you strike Lady Hathor trying to remove shards of burning crystal barehanded. Pain, pain, pain, pain, pain. Then nothing. When you finally started perceiving the world without pain once more, you noticed staring up at an unfamiliar ceiling of carved wood above with lanterns of mana lighting up every corner and leaving not a shadow of darkness anywhere. It had geometric patterns, flowers, and strange creatures rearing on hind legs that could not possibly be from earth. It takes a few seconds for the brain to register that you are not in Tokyo anymore. Then it takes a few more seconds to realize that you aren't alone in the room either. Lady Hathor lies next to you on a carpeted floor, asleep with her hand clasped with one of yours. A large bruise darkens her face, and she's breathing evenly in a deep slumber. She's completely out of it, and you are too weak to release her hand from yours. The skin of her palm feels rough and pitted with long furrows of scars and burns. It was your third visit to Arkadia, and it would prove to be the longest one. You would remain there for days, healing in the childhood home of---- "AGH!!! WHAT THE HELL!?" A shriek of pain from 'Street Kid' Takeoka interrupts your reminisces. "Ah, you finally ate one of those poisonous snacks. I was waiting for that to happen," you calmly announce and finish messaging on your cellphone. A quick update to the godmother and then an update to the other girls coming over soon.
>>6415584"Poisonous snacks!? Why the fuck didn't you warn me, ugh." Takeoka crawls into the living room slowly and scowls angrily at you. "Payback, ya lying bitch. You tried to screw me out of my proper share. I saw a few stacks of money in the bar. Those stacks contain one hundred bills of ten thousand yen each. In short, there's no fucking way my take is only 12,000 yen. I want you to tote up the take properly and give me my rightful share." You toss back the wad of bills in your pocket straight at the poisoned girl so she can calculate what you are owed. "Shit, you think I'm in good condition to actually count up the fucking take right now!?" Takeoka rages and groans but eventually starts piling up what she stole from Bar Kismet. Your actual share is 280,000 yen. You're pretty good at math. Working backward, the total cash Street Kid stole is five million six hundred thousand yen. Cripes, if you knew that working with the girls could garner this much loot, you would have joined them a lot earlier. It's the first time you've earned this much cash. You'll need to work out with the godmother how to clean it. "I know you stole other shit too, but I'll be patient and wait for you to fence them off first. I know a guy if you need help on that end." You smile and count your money once again before putting it in your pocket. "Fuck sakes, ask the others to buy me something for my stomach. Ugh!" Takeoka complains as she hides the loot in her shadow once more. Taking a bit of pity, you send a request to Shinoda to purchase some stomach medicine before arriving. What's the old saying again? Speak of Cao Cao and he arrives? Remembering the magical girl in question managed to summon her very presence here. She remains in the garden standing still as a statue and gazing directly into the living room. Sword has gotten taller and a little more mature, and her eyes are now a deep green. It had once been black. It's been almost a year since you last fought. The ambitions of Lady Hathor failed dramatically because her fellow Arkadian nobles could not stomach her ideas and support her plans accordingly. The Pretty Star Warriors took advantage accordingly, and amidst the sakura blossoms swirling in the final battle, Sword struck you down despite being clearly terrified of you. Threatening Aura - She still is. Look at her. Stiff shoulders, a wary battle stance, fingers twitching to summon up her blade, and darting green eyes looking for danger. Gouging out her eyes isn't something she can easily forget. "It's been a long time. How are the eyes?" You ask with fake curiosity while trying not to present a threat to the magical girl. That means not squaring up and keeping your hands out where Sword can see them. With an abrupt gesture, Sword taps one of her green eyes directly with her fingernail, and a distinctly crystalline clink can be heard with each tap to the eyeball. "They're working just fine. The Court of Stars offered me a choice to either regenerate my old eyes or put these magical eyes in my head. How's the chest? Yanking out whatever was left of the Celestial Dawn from your chest must have hurt." Sword spoke quickly and coolly. A memory surfaces in your mind. You remember asking a similar sort of question to [/b]Lady Hathor[/b] about grabbing the flaring anti-Arkadian crystal out of your chest barehanded. The answer she unexpectedly provided made you laugh. She repeated something you said to her once after a particularly grueling mission. "It hurt like a bastard," you answer, emphasizing each word. Sword perks up with happiness with the confirmed knowledge you suffered. A mere year can't erase the tension and grievances she holds against you. The sound of piano music begins to pick up. All eyes fall on the corrupted Chie as her fingers move in the air. "Stop playing Chie. You're making this difficult. The professional is here. Let her work and you'll be back home with Asato." You do not need Sword to get twitchy and start something. The days when you were willing to fight the magical warrior in one-on-one duels are over. Your skill set is so specific, it sucks. Arkadian Favor - How dare you? The Queen gifted you me.Sacrifice - Yeah! You got me. Besides, you vowed to protect the godmother and now you can swap places with her if she's in danger. Be thankful! ??? - That's right! You got me too!??? - No comment. I've got nothing to say.
>>6418702Lady Hathor admitted that constantly keeping you by her side eventually made you obsolete as a bodyguard. Her overwhelming need to keep her pawns firmly under her control ironically caused a creeping stagnation similar to the Arkadian Kingdom. Perhaps this blind spot was a manifestation of the madness she desperately tried to keep at bay. The smart thing she should have done was replace you with someone more powerful and capable. She didn't. Fierce Loyalty - Because she had plans. The crafty witch intended to use the Sumi gang as leverage. Chie stops playing her music reluctantly and waits for further orders. Taut and ready to act, who knows what she intends to do. Probably turn Sword into a meat carpet. "How did you do that? The corrupted don't follow orders from a mere human. Don't tell me you're working with Arkadia again like those stupid traitors." Sword glowers and summons a bright blade of light. The magical girl slowly moves to enter the house while pointing her weapon directly at you. "Just so you know, I'm not going to be able to do anything to help you out. It's your fault for letting me eat poisonous snacks," Takeoka declares and exaggerates her helplessness by dramatically splaying flat on the wooden floor of the house. "Gee, thanks for the backup." You don't dare to turn your head to look at your fellow therapy group member. The danger is before you. Soon enough, the glowing magical blade is hovering over your chest. It sizzles with energy straining to explode. "I don't suppose I can trouble to ask you who these 'stupid traitors' are?" You decide just because Sword wants to kill you doesn't mean you should miss a chance to ask some questions."You know exactly who I mean. They're from your old gang. Don't think we haven't been watching and waiting for you to show your true colors, Chevalier. I don't care what Helios and Cygnus believe, I know you'd gladly throw humanity away to serve the Arkadian Kingdom."Arkadian Favor - You are always welcome to return to the Arkadian Kingdom.Fierce Loyalty - You are not a traitor. Family, honor and loyalty. Cups and oaths exchanged. Maybe you need teach Sword to respect you by gouging out her eyes again. No, you can't lose your temper here. There's a little boy waiting for his mother to come back to him. He read your message, heard her voice and knows that soon he'll be going up north away from Tokyo. You promised, pinky swear."I'm not going to attack or bother arguing. Take care of the lady first. She's getting worse by the minute." "Then hands above your head and move away," Sword barks out orders and gestures with her blade to the furthest corner of the room. You comply, there's no reason not to but this police-like demand for compliance gets under your skin. It takes effort not to show it. The agitated Chie is watching closely to see if you'll order an attack, straining with eagerness to fight.
>>6418703"Aku Soku Zan." Sword intones solemnly and a breeze fills the room. An arcane circle forms beneath Chie's feet. You can taste the sweet Disquiet clashing with the crisp acrid taste of Starlight while white trails of glowing magic swirl around the agitated woman. Long black strands of polluting corruption worm out visible as Sword readies her blade and slashes at them. The edge cuts through easily as the stunned pianist slumps to the floor unconscious.Mission accomplished. Sort of."Aku Soku Zan." Sword repeats her catchphrase of 'Slay Evil Instantly' once more. The magic purification circle under your feet spins lazily. There's no further reaction since you don't have any corruption to destroy. >>6418704>What has Sword been up to since last year...>When are they going to give back the Heart Crystal of everyone...We can make some pretty easy guesses as to why they are stalking us. I doubt she'll tell us about Arkadia, since that is no longer our business, and she'd want to be responsible and keep us away from magical stuff, like keeping a potential recidivist away from crime. Don't think she'd share about the therapy group, since they obviously aren't being open about their intentions with that whole thing, given they have tried sneaking in before. So, to me that leaves catching up and getting an updates on everyone's heart crystals, Queen Bee will want to know especially. We could definitely do her a solid by getting some info on that. Though, personally, if we can only choose one question, I'd prioritize catching up with Sword. Gotta work those social links. While she's already getting on my nerves, I like her dynamic with Azami and the potential conflict of whether we'd prove Sword, or Helios&Cygnus right, in the case of us either sticking loyally with the Godmother or betraying our humanity to pursue love with Lady Hathor and her doomed kingdom.

Sword shifts her attention to the unconscious Chie after confirming you aren't corrupted but remains wary. The scowling magical girl gently props the unconscious woman into a more comfortable position and carefully checks her over for anything amiss. "It's been a long year, Sword. I deserve to know what you've been up to. You and your team have been stalking me this entire time, and that is creepy as fuck." You could try for diplomacy or subtly weave your question in with evasive politeness, but that sort of thing will not work. When Sword first fought against you, she believed the reason for your intense loyalty to Lady Hathor was due to corruption. Another unfortunate victim to rescue from the clutches of the malevolent forces of Arkadia, she thought. Then she discovered you had no Disquiet and had strange powers of regeneration. Purification magic had no effect on you.So next she assumed you were an Arkadian in the service of Lady Hathor but that guess was wrong when anti-Arkadian weapons failed. Completely confused, she eventually settled on another wrong assumption that enraged her. She assumed you were a regular human who chose out of their own free will to serve the enemies of humanity. The Pretty Star Warriors were ignorant of the existence of Domination for much of the conflict. They never witnessed the unique magical ability of Lady Hathor in action until near the end. Mainly because Lady Hathor had made a grave strategic error at the very start of her schemes. She used it on dominating the Sumi gang and temporarily ran out of power to enthrall more humans. Her madness was such that she could not bear the idea of freeing an enslaved victim to replace them with others who are more advantageous. The only action she could endure was to grow more powerful to increase the numbers she could command. Sanity has its advantages. "We are not stalking you. No one has time to keep an eye on you every day for a year. We checked in on you occasionally." Sword simply states as she stands up. "This house is a lot of work for 'occasionally', what with the magic cast on it," you dryly observe. Sword remains silent and instead approaches a wall close by. She touches it, and a strange paper talisman melts out of the wall under her fingertips with a pop. Then the magical girl rips the thin paper off the wall, and it begins burning. Green flames rapidly devour the previously invisible paper, leaving a small pile of ashes as the only evidence of its existence. "And now that magic is gone. I'm out of here. Don't bother with this place; no one is coming back here now that you know about it." While Sword talks, she keeps her back along the wall and starts moving to exit the house. Her magical weapon was still in hand and glowing with light. You move to block her. A hostile move, but now that Chie is out of danger, you don't have to be nice.
>>6425070"I had an eventful year. Want to hear some of it? I spent months in a juvenile facility after the gang took down their kanban 'sign'. Then the godmother got me out and transferred to a group home. Now I work to help out the families left behind after the cops arrested the men." "Am I supposed to feel bad about a criminal gang getting their just rewards?" Sword testily responds while Takeoka from her place on the floor mouths an agreement to the sentiment. "The godfather killed himself because of you." You say it as a cold fury takes over, and you begin shaking with anger. There's a look of surprise in the magical girl's eyes; she had not known and realizes that any more poorly chosen answers will result in a fight. "The past year? The Arkadian Kingdom is still active, and my team is still fighting against them. They've gotten savvier. Not very subtle since they're still a bunch of arrogant pricks. You made our lives a lot more difficult working with the enemy and teaching them about our world. Last three months, all the Lords and Ladies of Arkadia have been particularly active. And yes, we saw Lady Hathor." Sword tenses to defend against attack and moves towards the front door since you've blocked her way to the garden. You already know about her return. The shattered Arkadian Black Thorn at the pharmacy close by the group home proved Lady Hathor has returned to Tokyo. Was she trying to see you again? Is her madness compelling her to gather up her old tools and begin anew? That would explain why the drug-running group has access to Arkadian magical items. There are former Sumi gang members involved. There's something wrong with the situation. Lady Hathor would never allow her tools to indulge in internal strife to the point of killing each other or allow tools to damage themselves with addiction. She banned smoking and drinking during her reign over the Sumi gang and made everyone go cold turkey. That lover of control would never tolerate Kiyotaka Hisato popping meth pills to get high and incapacitate himself. Just as this realization flashes through your mind, the garden welcomes a new intruder. "Hey girlies, someone got an upset stomach? You're in luck, I got---" Ichijou Sayaka blithely dashes in with two large plastic bags filled with food, drink, and medication. She stops just before the sliding glass doors to take in the sight of the tense faceoff between you and Sword inside the empty house. "It's been a while, Sword. Do you want me to still call you 'Akane', even after outing you as a spy? No? Okay. Anyways, I hope you've decided to actually get therapy somewhere and talk about your feelings, girl. You are such a hot mess." The former athlete nervously sets down the plastic bags.Learning that Sword was the infiltrator who joined the group therapy surprises you. You are unable to conceal your curiosity and turn to Ichijou. "How did you figure out she was the spy?" You ask.
>>6425071"She talks in her sleep," Ichijou answers with an embarrassed chuckle. Sword blushes bright red, unable to deny the answer. Her mouth opens and shuts soundlessly. "Oh, ah, er..." That was not the answer you were expecting. You don't quite know how to react. The idea of the taciturn and perpetually frowning Sword actually getting involved with someone feels like a bad joke. "Don't worry, I am currently single. There's absolutely nothing between me and Sword now. So if you're interes---." "Not interested," you answer immediately. "Girl, no need to shoot me down that quickly. Give me a chance!" The flirty girl doesn't sound the least bit thwarted by your response. She smiles at you cheekily despite your impassive frown. "For fuck's sake, remember we made the 'Sayaka Rule'. You are not allowed to date anyone in our group. We barely stopped Ren from quitting because of you," Takeoka shouts angrily from her position on the living room floor. She has the energy to glare at the bubbly former athlete. This is a clown show. Sword hurriedly dismisses her weapon with a thought and clearly wants to flee to avoid further awkward commentary from her... ex-girlfriend? One-night stand? Whatever the hell 'Sports Jock' Ichijou Sayaka was to Pretty Star Warrior Sword. You give Sword side-eye, which irritates your enemy. "I don't need judgment from you, Miss 'I only kissed Lady Hathor once'," Sword snaps and points an accusing finger directly at you. "Are you seriously saying a kiss is the same as whatever you got up to?" you hit back while inwardly cringing as Ichijou smiles knowingly. "My gaydar remains impeccable." The telekinesis-wielding girl practically glows with an aura of smugness. "Oh god, everyone here is a dramatic disaster lesbian," Takeoka mutters and tries to worm away to get further away. You need to take control of the situation. "Don't leave. Answer me. Why is it taking so long to return everyone's Heart Crystal?" You demand before Sword can run off. The question clearly makes the magical girl very uncomfortable; she no longer looks like the firm and upright warrior of the Court of Stars. "Yeah, what is up with you not giving it back!?" Takeoka jumps in the conversation. Even Ichijou stares evenly at her former lover and waits for an answer.Sword sighs and rubs the back of her neck.
>>6425073"We're still curing the corrupted Heart Crystals in the 'easy bake oven'. People who have high-potential magic plus personal issues plus corruption are hard to purify. Take Takeoka there as an example," Sword says, pointing to the bristling sick girl on the floor before continuing. "If she just had corruption and magical potential or personal issues and corruption, we'd blast her with purification and leave with no problem. But her issues completes the trifecta, and those elements bleed and interact in unpredictable ways. We want to only purge the magical corruption; we don't want to change your personality and destroy your abilities by accident. You could end up becoming a different person against your will if we're careless. In short, I don't need therapy, but you do." Sword gives a pointed look at Ichijou who bristles at the implications of the gaze. "You're just like a loser who can't admit they lost. I do not have an issue, and I don't need therapy. A winner doesn't need therapy to stop thinking sad thoughts, unlike you! They just pull through and get better on their own. Don't feel ashamed 'Akane'. We can't all be great." The once smiling and formerly bubbly athlete shifted into the vexed and prickly jerk athlete everyone said she was. The raging girl is about to accelerate her nastiness when Sword turns and walks away. The magical warrior reaches the front door and pushes it open to exit. The light from the open door shines so brightly that all you can do is avert your eyes. Then the light fades, revealing Sword is nowhere in sight after passing through. "Running away? That's all you do! Wanting to get close and then pulling away because of your own emotional damage," 'Sport Jock' Ichijou rages, and small arcs of energy crackle around her hand as though ready to use her telekinetic abilities. Then she stops, remembering your presence. The former track-and-field star smiles awkwardly as though it could erase the outburst she just had. "The 'Sayaka Rule' is an excellent one. I fully support it." Guess the majority is to properly call the Godmother and update her through phone calls and not text.
Hopefully post tonight.I finished reading volume three of Lord of Mysteries. I'm glad I kept at it because volume one was indeed boring and even the first of volume 2 was pretty staid.Things are getting much better in the story.
You never understood the godmother's insistence on a call after finishing work. The old woman disliked emails and texts. She preferred an actual conversation face-to-face, but she will settle for a phone call. This generational difference between the young and old will never be resolved. You wish she'd be satisfied with text messages like normal people, but it must be a phone call. But before calling, you need to deal with a few things first. First is Takeoka Rui. The sick girl remains on the floor as her fellow group member Ichijou Sayaka starts emptying the bags she brought. Cheap convenience store food and drink exit the crinkly plastic as the former athlete searches for the stomach medicine. "Ugh, yakuza girl didn't warn me about poisonous snacks!" Takeoka whines. "Girlie, you probably deserved it." Ichijou sounds utterly unsympathetic as the sought-after packet of stomach medicine comes out of the bag at last. You snatch the medication out of Ichijou's hand. "You're right about that. Give it back, 'Street Kid'." You demand harshly as the two girls look at you stunned. "What are you talking about?" Takeoka acts innocent. "You know what I'm talking about. I think I can guess what your issue is, 'Street Kid'. You're a klepto. Stealing despite knowing you will be caught and punished, you can't stop yourself. Did I guess right?" You dangle the medicine she desperately needs just above and out of reach. The frustrated goth girl growls with irritation. "I stole nothing." Takeoka maintains her lie. Threatening Aura - You tried being nice. Now it's time to be a little mean. You lift your foot and place it on the back of Takeoka's head. "Hey, what are---" The liar can't finish her sentence. You press the foot down and force her forehead to the floor with a thunk. Ichijou looks stunned as you put more weight down on the frantic Takeoka, who tries to push your foot off the back of her head. Her hands grabbing then slipping off the fine polished leather shoe before she gives up. "Shit! Okay! I'll give it back!" The thief dips her hand into her shadow to retrieve the Fool's Bracer and tosses it up. You snatch the magical tool as it descends from the throw before lifting the foot off her head. The medicine drops to the floor. "How did you know Rui stole that?" Ichijou asks as you place the Fool's Bracer back on your wrist. "The purification circle didn't react to destroy the artifact because it wasn't on me anymore. I'm grateful Takeoka was dumb enough to steal it off me, it saved me from more trouble with Sword." You say this and walk over to the unconscious Chie. The sputtering thief endures a scolding by her comrade. You gently shake Chie awake. Bleary eyes slowly open in confusion and clear into shock. "It's okay. It's over. We're going to hide out here until it's time to leave. Everything has been arranged."
>>6430232"Did I have a nightmare?" Chie asks timidly. She looked at her fingers and twiddled them, as though expecting the sound of piano keys to begin once more. "No. It was real. I don't know how much you remember, but it was no nightmare." You help her up and guide her to your companions. The open smile of Ichijou and snacks does much to raise the spirits of the shaken pianist. You're glad that at least someone has the social skill and friendliness to put another at ease, because it is clearly not a strong point of the thieving Takeoka, who balefully glowers at you while chewing her pills. It takes only a short while to get some details from Chie about her plunge into the abyss of corruption. It started so subtly at first. Short bursts of irritation, easily quieted thoughts of violence, and brief moments of auditory illusions of music playing and such grew into longer and harder-to-control compulsions and delusions. There were times when she could not remember fully where she was or what she had been doing; other times she remembered, but like an observer watching from afar. She remembered doing something to Yamaguchi but leaves much unsaid. The ebullient Ichijou and prickly Takeoka must find the tale depressingly familiar to their own experience. You can't help but notice Chie avoids mentioning anything about her son or husband in the tale, shying away from providing too many details. No one dares to press for more details. "I need to step out and make a call. The godmother will be happy to hear you're safe," you say while heading towards the garden for some privacy. "Godmother? Who is that?" Ichijou asks as she finishes writing a message on her smartphone. Games: Mission accomplished, girls!Truthspeaker: meat carpet back to normal "The one who sent me on this job. She wants me to call her after it was over." You answer simply. Both Ichijou and Takeoka look baffled; they don't know much about you. During group therapy, you barely mentioned anything about your life and nothing about Lady Sumi. "What kind of mom sends her kid to a job like this? And why the heck are you living in a group home then if she's still around? Calling your mom after work is totally mom behaviour." Takeoka mutters. You stop walking and turn to look at the other girl. "You're getting confused about the 'mother' in the title. She's not my mom and can't take me out of the system." You try to clarify, but it clearly doesn't take. "Making sure her kid is doing okay by actually talking to them is something a mom would demand." 'Sport Jock' Ichijou half-jokingly points out. You stare at them and consider how the situation must look. Yakuza argot emphasized familial titles in the hierarchy so that the boss is 'dad' and his wife is 'mom'. When the Sumi gang was still in business, you resided in a small room within the godfather's house. All the better to serve and learn of the life you choose. Choice has always been important.
>>6430233Ignoring the others, you step out into the garden. The strange illusion disguising the house has disappeared, and the gate leading to the street is visible. Now anyone can see the house. The air no longer feels still and tranquil; the sound of the city churns and invades. Your phone rings for only a few moments before Lady Sumi answers. "Did something happen? I saw the news about Maeda's office." Lady Sumi's voice at the other end is taut with worry. "I'm okay. I focused on trading a few favors to help with the mission rather than going to Maeda's place. I'm happy to report that Chie is safe and sound. She'll be able to go up north with Asato and escape Tokyo." You hope that Lady Sumi won't notice the lack of details and be pleased by your accomplishment. "Who did you ask for help from, sweetie? There are not many people who would involve themselves in a situation like this." Ah nuts, you were hoping she wouldn't ask that. You don't know how Lady Sumi will react to the idea that the members of your therapy group were invited to meddle in this affair. Yet they were the reason that the situation was resolved so well. You recount the story and edit out certain elements for the godmother. "Good job. I'm proud of you, sweetie. I know there's more to the situation than you let on, but as long as the Toyo Group can't get at us, then I'm willing to let you have your secrets. Remember not to trust those girls too much and keep some cards close to your chest. Never know what will come out." You feel relieved. The old woman has a keen sense of when someone is pulling bullshit on her, but she isn't going to press for too many details. "This job was more dangerous and troublesome than expected. I don't think the usual free meal at 'Last Chance' is going to cut it." "If you're offering, then I do have something in mind..." >>6430240There's quite a bit that Azami wants. She's not sure exactly what specifically because she is a 18 year old and facing an uncertain future. She would really like to get revenge on the Arkadian Kingdom because they're dangerous and she has unfinished business with lady Hathor. She also wants to get revenge on the Pretty Star Warriors because they put the final nails on the coffin for the Sumi gang. She barely refrains because these magical girls are the only ones who can purify the corrupted.
>>6430243I get that this is your style of writing, the kind of timelessness, and I trust you plan to more organically reveal the capabilities/history of the kingdom and warriors. But to plot revenge, I gotta ask, to the extent that Azami knows, how big is the kingdom and warriors? What does she know about Seer? Do Arkadians even have hearts?
>>6430240She never really had a life of her own. She grew up in the yakuza and now that's hanging on by a thread. She hates the PSW for ruining her life, but she hates the Arkadian Kingdom for puppeting the gang for a year and causing this to happen in the first place. Not to mention the heavy cloud of mixed feelings and sentiment surrounding Lady Hathor.>>6430254I really can't imagine Azami working a regular boring japanese 9 to 5+ as a soul-deprived OL, not after what she's been through and her upbringing. I don't even know if she'd like to be the inheritor of the Sumi gang's ashes from the godmother. This sort of loneliness and uncertainty of where to go and what sort of life to live after not having any choice for so long, despite the cope she displays in >>6430233, is something I find very familiar. It's also something that, though I just hit 30 a couple months or so ago, I still don't know if I'll quite accept or understand. Then again, my life is different enough
>>6430235>The right to access what is left of the Sumi 'arsenal', but first you'll need to find it using the old clues left behind...We may need every advantage we can get our hands on, if Arkadia is back.
>>6430254Azami knows roughly the size of the kingdom and the limited population of the place, it is also constantly shrinking. The borders of the place are falling into the outer darkness and swallowing it up. As for if Arkadians have Hearts. Azami suspects they do not but she never confirmed it. The story will have future details.Seer is the oldest of the magical girl and a native of the Court of Stars unlike the other magical girls. A discovery told to her by Lady Hathor. As for direction, I will leave it up to players to decide. Our girl is a maladjusted teen girl who longs for relevance and meaning. She only felt that when working for the Family and when enthralled by the Arkadian Kingdom. Our girl felt important and powerful, each day felt significant and interesting. Normal Japanese life significantly lacks that spark of meaning. So the loss of the Sumi gang and becoming free from Arkadia has put her in a state of denial.

>>6430235>The keys to the 'workshop' and opportunity to purchase it from the godmother one day...A place to call home someday...>>6430240I want to do that too, but we need to secure Chie and Asato's safe journey first
>>6430477>So the loss of the Sumi gang and becoming free from Arkadia has put her in a state of denial. The Godmother is totally dying, ain't she?>longs for relevance and meaningI get it. The true path is to become a Neo-Featherman Black actor! Or become a professional athlete using unnatural toughness.>native of the Court of Starsso many aliens>>6430305>inheritor of the Sumi gang's ashes from the godmotherI mean, there was this funny exchange:>"... New orders, call me Godmother.">"... Wouldn't that upset godmother Sumi?"
>>6430546>Godmother is totally dyingAnd Azami is the best candidate to carry on the torch or inherit ashes, yes>Neo-Featherman Black actor! Or become a professional athleteIf you think about it, magic powers means potential for interesting professions in modernity. But will it be enough to keep Azami alive and motivated? Losing both the Godmother and Lady Hathor could drive her to the brink of despair, unless the therapy group help her with the true power of... having regular friendsUltimately, Azami needs a lot of help. Guess which ragtag bunch of bitches just provided her a lot of unrelated help? I look forward to the emotional catharsis of the therapy group truth reveal scene, QM...Haruka was a ruler girl who grabbed a yakuza boy. Azami is a yakuza girl who... needs a ruler boy for a love interest?

>>6430735With a yakuza "workshop" as a potential inheritance, it gave me a sudden flash of Azami as a Bloodborne-esque horror hunter but in modern-day suits and grit. Imagine her making hunting and killing fucked up fairy abominations possibly worse than Arkadian Kingdom as her future career. It might beat being a leader/manager of her own yakuza gang like the godmother had to be.But as a wise guy once said: the future is better thought of later.
