The Emperor's very own Angels. There's the 9 best known ones, the 20 or so somewhat heard about ones and then there's the rest.

And you soon will become one yourself. Still a 12 year old boy you were selected to become a neophyte. The first choice you make is not really your own, but that of fate.

Pick one of 4 Space Marine Chapters to be part of. This choice stays unchanged for the whole Quest. Pick 1:
> Nanoq Claws
> The Pride
> The Eyes in the Trees
> Lancebearers

The rules are standard. Write in the choice you want and the majority voted choice wins. I will try to update the Quest 1-2 times per day, if there's enough response for a clear winning opinion.

(all chapters have been randomly generated using a rolling table)

the reasonable marines from wish (and canon chapters) are not here because part of the fun of the Quest is supposed not having the full picture of the Chapter and it’s lore and learning more organically over time.

The pride is strongly tied to the Imperial Tarot. Thus every post a 'fortune' will be read. This will decide random events, influence 'rolls' if any happen and course of action by the chapter at large.

How the Tarot roll works:
3d112 is rolled, if a number repeats pick the next higher number.

Even - card places straight
Odd - Card placed twisted (upside down)

(note this is not some kind of canon imperial tarot, we know way too little about the actual one and it's said to have tons of regional variation anyway.

The Tarot: too long for a post had to make an image
>>
>>6409709
75 - Inverted Labyrinthine Path - a stright path towards escape or survival
112 - The Candle a fragile flame of hope that guides the path
97 - Inverted Dishonored Scion - Honor is restores. A wayward's son's inheritance is brought back.

The Pride has suffered greatley. The portracted war against the Hive Splinter Inferialis Magna has left the chapter near decimated with not even two full companies of marines left the Chapter has spent over decade staring extinction into the face while continuing to fight battles one would reasonably avoid in such situation.

However the cards have offered a good fortune and the fortune came true. A delivery of large swaths of geneseed from the Mechanicum. Not just from their own gene-vaults but also a donation from the progenitor chapter. Their lineage once thought lost has somehow resurfaced from the deep sea of much which is the imperial administration. A letter of gratitude dry as can be is sent, out, but the news thought to be joyous are not widely announced.

Over 600 samples of geneseed an overwhealming amount, enough to restore the chapter and pave it's future. However also an overwhealming amount. Young ambitious marines will outnumber the oldguard 4:1.

With such a demand for new recruits for the first time in the Chapter's history recruits from outside of the chapter homeworld are permitted to volounteer.

Children of Tigris Secundus - a frozen feral homeworld of the chapter - and those from the planets who fell to the tyranids shall be abllowed to participate in the selection both and on equal footing.

A) Are you a Child of Tigris Secundus?
Yes - you have lived the life of a nomad and hunter. You know nothing of the wider imperium or technology really, however you know harsh surival and have deep knowlege of spirituality.

No - you are a child displaced by tyranid invasion. You lived ina hive or a city. You know the horrors the galaxy holds, but the chapter are stragers to you. The only spirituality you know is the imperial cult.

You have passed the first selection process at least some of your values fit that which the chapter build's it's spirit on. Pick ONE virtue you excel at:

> Pride - to be steadfast in one's ways. Unshaken in one's convictions
> Pride in the Colors - you value the chapter's heraldry. You'd die before you'd let the chapter banner be snagged
> Premonition - you trust predictions of the future and you trust your gut on them.
> Honor&Compassion - you refuse to act in dishonorable ways to get what you want, but will do so if it's to aid those in need. You look at those below you not as a burden on you, but with obligation towards them.

> Upon entry into the chapter you are given a new High Gothic name (Roman or greek sounding) - what shall it be?

Rolled 71, 34, 87 = 192 (3d112)

I'll try to format votes better next time.

Name: Alcriminus - 2 Votes
Origin: Offworlder - displaced by the Tyranid Invasion

Pride in Colors and Honor And compassion got equal amounts of Votes.

I'll go with Honor&Compassion because those were votes from different posters than the Vote for the name.

Exceptional Value: Honor&Compassion

Let's start with the Tarot for the first few months as a new neophyte within the chapter.
>>
>>6409808
I think you mistook >>6409789
for me, that's a different anon. He just +1 my choices.

So the name Alcriminus got 3 votes in total, actually
>>
>>6409808
71 - Inverted Astropath
34 - The Daemon
87 - Inverted Blindseer

The lot of a neophyte is not easy. A mixture of constant medical procedures and strict training.

For off-worlders liek you lessons in imperial lore are minimal. You know where you are, the Helix Nebula in the Ultima Segmentum. The entire subsector has been ravaged by tyranids and the T'au have advanced into the region taking adventage of reduced imperial presence.
Still you need to learn the history of the chapter, etiquette when dealing with imperial nobiltiy and the handling of machine spirits.

The classes your kin spend most time on is survival training. You often descend into the fridgid wastes of Tygris. You learn to identify herbs, track animals and survive in the wild.

These excursions take weeks at a time. Leading you is Brother Januarius and Brother Apothecary Solarius. Where Januarius teaches you the local variant of low gothic and knowlege of survival Solarius is only there to perform the necessary rites to further the transformation into a true marine.

It takes months before combat practice begins. Despite being no more than 13 of age you are by now significantly larger than a normal man.

It is then when you learn of the main weaknesses of the chapter. A lack of Bechler's Gland, Mucranoid and Ootic Kidney. Leaves the warriors of your chapter exceptionally fragile to certain pathogens other chapters deal easily with. Your skin and hair are fated to turn completely white leaving you more vulnerable to light than even common mortals, while a lack of ootic kidney leaves your bretheren no better at handling poisons than common mortals.

This makes training include training in neutralizing toxins as well as daily injections of various poisons to build up resistance.

Slowly you see cliques forming and promising neophytes finding mentors in the few marines who remain on Tygris (less than 50)

Choice 1: Specialization - You need to decide what kind of marine you will eventually become

Higher professions like the Librarius or Apothecarium remain out of reach. The chapter focuses on melee combat.

> Sword
> Spear
> Axe
> Mounted/Mobile assault
> Sandard Bearer

Choice 2 - Voices in the Deep Snow
You have begun hearing voices echoing from deep snow in your expeditions down into the world.
> ignore it
> investigate directly (go there and talk to them)
> report to your superiors
> investigate studiously (take notes, try to classify what they say)

The Tyranids move like weather. Currently they seem to be engaged in battle with the T'au, but also a set of human worlds. Ones where the PDS seems to have managed to stalemate the tyranids. They are asking for aid. The chapter is cautious to intervene in a time as sensitive as it is right now. The calls for distress however keep comming the Red Dragoons Regiment leadership and the local branch of the Order of the Bloody Rose are conteplating landing aid locally. They have not requested aid from the chapter.(grand metting)

From what I googled, "a standard Bearer, also known as an Ancient, are Veteran Space Marines who have shown honour and combat prowess sufficient to be granted the right to carry the Company Banner into battle." We must be a very special boy... or all the vets are ded.
>>
>>6409876
>or all the vets are ded.
It seems that's more likely
>>
>>6409876
Well, two companies are left, and the chapter is recruiting now as much as possible.
>>
>>6409816
>Standard Bearer
The most honourable position. Most importantly, it goes where the fighting is heaviest. Martyrdom in the throne's name is likelier than ever!

>Investigate studiously (take notes, try to classify what they say)
We must be cautious. This could be a message from an imperial saint. It could also be a daemon, but we must have faith in the God Emperor before we make any sudden decisions.
>>
Rolled 100, 76, 39 = 215 (3d112)

>>6409887
>>6409876
The chapter is effectively spawning 6 companies in in one generation and also due to how proud they are in their colors they just have more Standard Bearers than the Codex astartes prescribes. (they also use them ot help rally mortal troops which they work with, and have a higher than usual mortality)

3 votes for Mounted/Mobile assault, but 4 for Standard Bearer.

Simmilarly 3 votes for reporting it and 4 for a studious investigation.
---------
Alcriminus chose the most ambitious path for the up and comming generation of the Pride Chapter.

A standard bearer. To become a standard bearer within the Pride one must display exceptional purity of spirit. In a chapter who value shock and awe you study to be the pillar of the 'ave'.

You manage to find a mentor in Veteran Brother Aurelius. You notice in aurelius that he is heavily augmented. More metal than flesh at this point, one could mistake him for a Son of Medusa with that kind of apperance. You soon learn in training why that is the case.

Standard bearer's carry two roles. One is to carry the banner at the frong of a formation charge and the other is to plant it firmly in the ground when ground is declared as the staging ground of a battle one may not retreat from.

In a charge the standardbearer may not let his arm shake, he may not retreat even cautiously and he may not doge carelessly. His role is that of a symbol. In a defensive battle he has to be like an umoving oak, one that does not show his back to the enemy even when surrounded.

Trainign for a standard bearer thus includes endurance training. Battlefield awareness, toughness excercizes and the ability to doge by picking areas you want to be hit as opposed to doing so through larger movements.

> Give me 2 1d100 rolls (best by 2 different players) for how well Alcriminus does in training as a 'speartip' and 'anker' Standard Bearer.
-----------------
The investigation:
You can distinguish at minimum 2 types of voices. However more than a dozen people. As you carefully note everything you hear. You notice there are three things the snow tells you.
> things that offer you rewards - strength power, presitege, knowlege,
> things that beg, those that seem to plead for your help
> those that are lost - thingds that mutter incoherently.

The things that wish to offer you things appear to mimick the things that beg and that are lost. Bizzarely enough. Your investigation however ends quite abruptly. The voices are gone. One day.

Choice 1: What do you do about the voices?
> Investigate more agressively - they may be gone, but now you could investigate the side of disaperance
> Talk to your field training supervisor Januarius
> Talk to your mentor Brother Aurelius
> talk to the Chaplain - (tarot divination)
> attempt to perform Tarot divination yourself regarding the issue
>>
>>6409948
>things that beg, those that seem to plead for your help

Next turn's tarot:
100 - Fortress of Faith
76 - The Labyrinthine Path
39 - Inverted galaxy

The 3 allied factions of the region meet up to discuss the distress calls from the worlds fighting the Tyranids. The situation seems suspiscious. For one the reason they can even send distress signals out is due to a series of warp storms dispersing the tyranid fleet leaving ground troops fighting isolated. Coudl this explain how a PDF regiment alone is holding out?

The Sister's of Battle belive it is a blessing from the Emperor. News also reach them of a PDF soldier who has used a chain sword to cut down over a hundred tyranids all by himself before dying. Without approval the locals have begun treatim him as a Saint and the Local Order of the bloody rose seem convinced.

The Red Dragoon'r leadership seems ethnusiastic to send some soldiers to in the very least test what is happening. The Chapter Master of the Pride however is cautious. The fortunes predict deception and a false call from the warp.

In less perilous times he would have volounteered to send a company wof Astartes with his mortal allies to investigate the situation however. For now he's keeping out of it:

> Choice 2: Still some childishness remains
Some fellow neophytesinvite you in confidence to evesdrop on the deliberations of the Allied council to find you the details of what exactly is beind discussed and planned.

The Chaplain at the end of the day is someone of authority so we aren't going behind the Chapter's back, plus it has to be with some mumbo jumbo hodoo vodoo stuff, so I think it's a good option
